Neighbour sold a 10 year old AAx dairy cow in Carnaross Thursday 610 kgs €1,400. Though it a good price as she was a small frame animal with little flesh and just a middle or the road O grade.

Those small AAx course would surprise you from two point of view. First off at that price e I suspect she was hung. At 290 kgs DW she made 4.8/ kg. I often wonder do so.ee AA ciwsgo into the generic AA burger trade for chip shops or pub grub

On the other hand if a lad put her to grass is 100kgs lw by the end of September possible and 360DW K/O @ 4.8/ kg

I am tending towards the first explanation. Another factor is what way tge mart she sold in weight

Well you don't mention the logical reason is that farmers are better off selling small numbers in the mart where factory agents are present with demand for beef which you will have for the next few weeks at least

Just wondering where is the profit for the buyer at the ring paying 1400 plus mart fees,transport, factory fees, for an animal that might make 1392 and that's based on 4.80 payment for a 10 yo o grade lacking in flesh cow and you must know where price's are going when you are valuing the same cow fat in September at 4.80 payment I very much hope you are right with your price prediction

had an agent on the phone offering me a base of 5.15 for bullocks to be killed on Tuesday. More to be got I reckon over the next 2/3 weeks

Lads need to remember that cattle being sold now were kept for approx 6 month winter have had very poor weather since they went to grass have not thrived as well as they should have and 5.15 was being paid since January so current price is not great all things considered so hold on for a lot more

Many factories have a hex bonus all year round no need to pre book in Feb that's only a joke they are only trying to find out what number of stock might be out there in advance

not relevant to beef price but I would like people’s opinion on this, I think Bass and a few more commented on this but I usually feed my cattle 5kgs of meal on the grass got 7 weeks before I finish them, a lot I know but would I be better to feed them 3 kgs for 12 weeks instead, I know more labour involved but would the Cattle thrive more and gain more weight? Also I would imagine that it should help with grass as the cattle wouldn’t be consuming as much so I should have more grass for other cattle

I would appreciate your thoughts

Depends on the type of cattle but here I fatten continental bullocks on grass and I wouldn’t waste my time going out with any less that 5kg a day.

CattCattle can consume about 500 grans/100kgs of LW without reducing grass intake. After that they start to reduce grass intake significantly.

So yes feeding 3kgs over 12 weeks is more beneficial than 5kgs o wr 7 weeks if tge animals are in tge 550-650kg bracket.

Some like @Cavanjack wlll feed Continrntals heavier, however they are much more efficient to feed and will often be heavier weights. Another factor to taken into account is that you will have faster eaters and stronger cattle that will consume more than the average. It important to draft these as they come fit.

Mynown preference is for 3kgs during tghe summer up until September and increase tgen

Likewise....feeding continental cattle here 5 kgs at grass…they prob 720kgs +....Will feed on for another 6 weeks..as you say wasting your time with less than 5kgs to Continental cattle

could you give me an example of how much less grass that they would eat, for example if you started feeding 40 cattle early June and you got an average year how many acres of grass would these cattle need if I was to give them 3kgs

Probably about 35 odd acres but you need to sub divide into paddocks and manage Probably.

It also depends on the ground you have and weight of the cattle.

Was speaking to a neighbour who finishes a fair few cattle. He is after taking 5.10 flat for 30 FRX bullocks. They will be O- at best…

I have a half load (bullocks) going monday. 5.20 base secured - midlands.
There are 2 large over 36 month hard fed continentals on it and was told they will pay 5:15 base for the 2.
Tried to fight it and was told to take it or leave them behind.
He also mentioned that there may be a cooling off on price coming - but thats probably being thrown out there to flush cattle out.

Real attempt at a pullback today. Quoted 5.1 for heifers and 5.05 for bullocks this afternoon only 8 of them. They can stay there.

they must have heard u bought the land bass! That’s a shocking drop in the space of a week to 10 days. They did the same with sheep. Knocked nearly a €1 in a week.

That's only a factory just trying it on just totally ignore as it's not a real price and you can be sure they wil get no cattle at that price

Looking at having cattle in Carnaross today.. they looked to be more in demand than last week. Seen fit to kill FR bullocks making €2.80 a kg live weight. They willbe hanging in Clones in the morning I would say.
