5.05 base for heifers. I got the equivalent of 5.50 flat for R/O heifers in mart this week.

Cattle are starting to get scarce. There will ge no cattle off grass until late June at the earliest. European championships in another few weeks abd Olympics in Paris in August. 30k more cattle killed than this tine last year and less projected in the chain for the complete year. If we can get any bit of control prices might strengthen a bit

@kmag would you mind sharing a graph of those prices

I will try to get it into a format that I can upload without showing too much info.

It's the best I can do. Not good at this sort of thing.

I would love to over lay that data to this. If you wish to send it via DM it

Not a hope of any bit of control with the factory cartel. You surely know that by know. But I hope I am proven wrong.

I'd imagine most of the beef needed for the Olympics has already been sourced. Burgers are normally top sellers at these things and I assume it's all frozen stuff and a lot of it will be the bottom of the grade. I read an article lately that they expect Vegan to have a 30% share of the market at this Olympics if one can believe that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,357 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

The meat for the Euro's is probably all sourced, however chills will be full at present and will only start to empty from next week on. No the burgers for the Olympics would not be sourced yet. It unlikely all the burgers for the Euro's are even frozen yet. Storage woukd be the issue. We live in a JIT world. The chills will empty and demand will ramp up.

The demand will not just be for burgers but for steak for restaurant during it

Lot of lads need a price boost for the next few months as their is a lot of expensive cattle on grass due to never ending winter and poor thrive up to now on grass imo it'll be a lot later this summer before grass cattle are ready than many realise

On factory price lads always seem to forget that we only have a handful of factories buying cattle and thousands of individuals selling and what would improve the farmers side massively if they did 2 things stop booking in cattle 1 or 2 weeks ahead with no price agreed and farmers need to share information on quoted/paid prices with each other as most refuse to tell each other what factories are really paying and this totally plays into the factories hands and this is 1 of the main reasons why factories are in control

I think the talk was that up to 30% of the food on offer could be vegan. But as with any of these stats, there's the press release and then there's the reality.

A big thank you to KAMG for the price data.

Its the prime kill with calves and aged bulls removed. Must look at it further to see what would happen if cows were removed

No problem. This is an example of how beneficial this forum can be. Well put together Mr Stonewall.

If we can keep a few type of graphs going and update it every 2 months it would be super stuff

Have very little experience fattening blues here, bought these bullocks for €900 each last December at 400kg..They are not on meal and will be 30 month at the end of September..do lads find there is much meal needed with cattle like these to get them fit?

They are nice soft looking blues. I’d still try and get them on meal 6-8 weeks before you’d intend killing them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,357 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Abd I would have no issue feeding them 12 weeks. 3 kgs of a maize/barley/ hulls mix wouldcreally soften them up. I be starting to feed now and try to catch a high price in July.

Talking to lad today a few factory agents are saying that prices are set to rise over the next few weeks. Numbers tightening

From a labour point of view I’d feed 6kg for 6 weeks rather than 3 for 12.
If working off the farm 12 weeks is a long time to be dragging feed to cattle out in a field unless you are very well set up for it.

If you are feeding 6kgs you are replacing 3kgs of grass DM with3 kgs of ration. The longer period will give greater benefit. I am feeding all summer long more or less. makes no difference whether I am throwing it out to 20 rather than 10. I am feeding 30 at present in two bunches. Blue half barrels are used for feeding.

the normal grass cattle in July August could be a month later this due to loss in thrive from the wet summer last year and the late spring/turnout this year

I think by August lads will be pushing U30 months cattle to prevent them going over age. August and early September wl ve tricky as the Olympics will be over and demand will slow. A lot will depend on the July kill. Problems for processors will be June into the first two weeks of July IMO.

Spent too much time hunting valve in the marts last back end to be honest..too many wasted days..That crack is ideal for retired or semi retired lads who like the craic, getting out of sheep here this year so will up the beef numbers but think I'll rear extra beef calves instead of buying extra store cattle,..with current mart prices for store cattle its hard to see much margin..calves,milk powder and meal were cheaper this year than last where store cattle were more exspencive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,601 ✭✭✭Dunedin

wouldn’t disagree with this. Just means though farmers are running faster to stay still - more expense on meal just to get them finished at the same time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,357 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Mid Jan to mid March, those eight weeks are the peak calving months. These animals will go over 30 months mid July to mid September. A lot of the earlier cattle will be hung last winter. You are left with mainly late Feb/ March. The QA bonus is reduced by 12c/kg over 30 months and as well the different breed schemes, AA, HE etc can be effected

can you easily check online how many movements an animal has that you hope to buy? Looking on afford and Icbf but can’t seem to find any way

60 days feeding 3 kg ration, will gain 60 kg to 640 kg @ 51% KO = 326 kg @4.80/kg = €1560. Biggest issue in coming months is price drop when numbers arrive. €60 meal might beat worst of price drop.
