Such an exciting development to see an all-county premier intermediate. Hopefully it’s just the start of much needed change in the county as we’ve been stuck in a time warp with 50 years that we can’t get out of

credit to everyone involved in getting this over the line

Same format yes, I don’t think there was any alternative proposal put forward. You’re correct though, group games are essentially pointless in it. There’s probably a certain element of time constraints to it but it’s a pity it can’t be 2 groups of 6 with 2 or 3 teams from each group being eliminated after the group stage as that would make those games very competitive.

Win your group and you are straight into a 1/4 final, get an extra weeks rest & avoid Ballygunner in a 1/4 final (Some would say that would be the best time to play them!). Also, you are safe from relegation & we have seen the likes of Lismore fall through the trap door & it’s not something any club wants to be worrying about!

There is also a slight advantage of finishing 2nd in the group in that you play a team that finished 3rd in another group.

The 2 groups of 6 was the system for years & we ended up seeing a lot of lobsided games & dead rubbers towards the end of the fixtures, hence there was a change a few years ago.

Ya the 2 groups of 6 doesn’t work in a split season anyway.

So what's the format now underneath premier intermediate? Is intermediate all county too?

Super win for SETU (formerly WIT) in the Fitzgibbon quarter final away to DCU tonight, 3-16 to 2-16. Billy Nolan was class at centre back

Can't imagine the crowd will be big I parked at a leinster u21 final previously at the below travelling in from the road from Kilkenny and had no issues.

Probably the most accurate opinion post match on here. Corner back is a huge issue for us. Gleeson hasn't quite kick on from his early promise and McNulty is a very average intercounty player that would struggle to get into most other teams around us. Iarlaith will take one of the positions come championship. He will be given the man marker type role for the likes of Gillane etc.

Out to the half back line, Fagan was quite poor on Sunday. question marks are certainly warranted over his ability as a wing back especially when you come up against decent opposition (Hegarty & co). Lyons is too loose and wasteful for the centre back role. TDB is only only man to fill take position. Resultantly from the above we have 2 gaps to fill at corner back and wing back. Hard to see at the moment who is going to step up and take on those positions. Iarlaith Daly and Prunty are certs for the full back line along with Lyons and TDB in the half back line.

You can talk all day about midfield and half forward line and who plays where etc. but the biggest problem we have is both the primary and secondary possession associated with our own puck out and defending the short puck out from the opposition. If the stats were to be laid bare over the past 2 years or so, I'd say we are one of the worst preforming teams. A drastic change in strategy is required over the coming weeks if we are to be somewhat competitive when we meet Limerick in Thurles.

    Waterford 2-19 Dublin 3-16

So, for the second year in a row, Waterford drew their first league game against Dublin with the considerable assistance of two Stephen Bennett penalties.

At this stage of the year, there is little point in focusing on individual performances. Come next April, we won’t see the lengthy series of mishit shots and miscued passes which blotted the Waterford performance last Sunday. That said, there should be recognition of Jamie Barron’s non-stop display of lovely skills and hard running from start to finish. He was clearly the best player on the field, despite Donal O’Grady giving the award to Dublin’s Cian Boland on TG4. Thankfully, Jamie got the recognition he deserved in the GAA.ie team of the week.

Of much greater interest was looking for evidence of a new setup or playing style at the beginning of the Davy Fitzgerald regime. And such evidence as there was, was not reassuring. Waterford’s early dominance was as much due to Dublin disarray, as they sought to find their feet, as it was to the quality of Waterford’s play. This was indicated by the fact that, once they found their feet, Dublin played the better hurling and looked far better-coached than the home side. While obviously very fit, they also clearly had devoted a lot of attention to skills work and developing a definite style of play.

Dublin were particularly good at getting the ball in over the Waterford half-back line to their full forwards, and particularly their corner forwards. This was mostly well-measured ball, coming in low and dropping short to give the outcoming forwards the advantage over their markers. By contrast, much of Waterford’s game plan (if such it could be called) involved defenders soloing out of defence (rather than working it out) and either shooting themselves from long-distance or giving the ball to someone else to do the same thing.

While shooting from long-range will presumably yield a higher return later in the year than it did last Sunday, the problem with this approach is that it provides no role for corner forwards. This despite the fact that Waterford already have the best corner forward in the country in Dessie Hutchinson, with two other super prospects in this position – Patrick and Pádraig Fitzgerald – ready to break through. In the Munster League game against Clare, the two Waterford corner forwards – Pádraig Fitzgerald and Kevin Mahony – might as well not have been there, and I felt really sorry for Mahony last Sunday as not a single decent ball came his way. With one of the greatest corner forwards of all time – Eoin Kelly – on the sideline, I pray that what we have seen from Waterford in recent weeks is not a harbinger of how things will be in the coming year.

Ballygunner have provided the model in how to make optimum use of skillful and speedy corner forwards. This requires holding possession and passing the ball around in the middle third until a player is put in space and in a position to deliver killer balls to the inside line. Working the ball out from the back is also important given Waterford’s long-standing problems in winning their own puckouts, a problem that was in evidence again last Sunday. This approach is also likely to make the best use of Paddy Leavey’s undoubted talents (which do not include winning contested ball in the air).

Waterford also need to keep three full forwards pushed up, not only to make maximum use of the talent we have in these positions, but also to cut down on the use of short puckouts by the opposition (which Dublin used to good effect last Sunday). This device is becoming increasingly important in modern hurling, and Waterford need to keep up in this respect.

Anyone know of a decent (or even half decent) pub near O’Moore park, within walking distance preferably !

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Hat trick for Waterford’s Michael Kiely for UL tonight in 21 point victory over UCD

  • Registered Users Posts: 330 ✭✭JD. 60

Michael Kiely scored 3 goals for UL tonight ; play WIT in semi final next.

I really hope Kiely, the UL and the WIT lads get a break this weekend. Iarla is with UCC but seems to be injured so probably not a part. Even if Darragh Lyons and Jack Fagan are injured and obviously Stephen Bennett is suspended I'd prefer to rest them. Off the top of my head we could still field

    Shaun O Brien

    Conor Gleeson

    Conor Prunty

    Shane McNulty

    Calum Lyons

    Míchaél Harney

    Tom Barron

    Jamie Barron

    Cathrach Daly

    Neil Montgomery

    Paddy Curran

    Austin Gleeson

    Dessie Hutchinson

    DJ Foran

    Kevin Mahony

I'm not saying it's our strongest team or anything like that, just that we can go without the Fitz players.

  • Registered Users Posts: 37,988 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Interesting lineup and hopefully put up a big score

    Will Montgomery take frees ??

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭DiscoStew

    No, he absolutely will not!

I’d imagine one of Aussie, Reuben or Patrick Curran will start. If not Jack Prendergast will probably be the freetaker.

If that team does in fact start, you have 5 players who are into the FitzGibbon semifinals starting - Nolan, Mark Fitz, Jack P, Padraig Fitz & Kiely. Seems a little unnecessary even though I’m glad to see Mark & Padraig getting game time.

    It’s a delicate balancing act!

James Power (Clonea) scored 1-2 aswell

Mark Fitzgerald at fullback too. Great to see so many Waterford lads involved in the latter stages

  • Registered Users Posts: 37,988 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Best of luck to the team and management today

Safe travels to supporters travelling, O Moore Park is a nice stadium

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,841 ✭✭✭deisedude

The level of indiscipline is braindead stuff. 3 red cards and not even 5 minutes into the 2nd game of the league

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,394 ✭✭✭decies

Like a mirror imagine of Dublin game with sloppy mistakes , this time a draw wouldn’t be a good look .

  • Registered Users Posts: 330 ✭✭JD. 60

    Fine stadium alright.

Not sure what positions Waterford players are in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,394 ✭✭✭decies

God that stadium really shows how far the pecking order we will still be with improvements.

We need to kick on now, great score by Aussie there

Is Davy getting the players too fired up ? 5 mins in and a red card. Shouldn't be happening
