EasyGo public chargers

Cheers - I might well end up doing that, but I think my most regular public charging will probably be at Ecars units in one of the plazas along the M7 (that card is ordered). I'm mainly just trying to familiarise myself with public charging process after getting the car. This happens to be the best time to do that until my granny charging cable arrives in a few days' time, which is what I'll mainly be relying on until I can get a spark out here to fit my home charger. Although that Easygo charger was at a handy location for meeting someone yesterday, I'll normally be charging at home.

Meh - had no joy at all with my second attempt at using an Easygo charger earlier today. I had wanted to try the Ecars CCS2 charger outside Lidl. That turned out to be offline, but there was an Easygo Type 2 beside it so I thought I'd try that.

However, neither the charger nor the app would display anything that allowed me to proceed with a charge. The QR code on the charger wouldn't scan despite several attempts, and I couldn't see anywhere either on the charger or in the app to try the "Type In The Code" option. Going back to the app I tapped on "Payment & Sessions" then tried both "Sessions" and "My Wallet", but could see no way of adding credit and I didn't have any more time to waste on it, so had to just leave it. Realised when I got home that I could have added credit via the website, so I have a tenner on it now just to start me off, but it's a bit dumb if you can't add funds via the app - if you can, it's not in any way intuitive.

Hopefully the third attempt will be more successful!

App: Payments, My Wallet, Deposit Funds, enter an amount, click Deposit, choose Credit/Debit Card, enter card number.

In my experience, the Easy Go app can be problematic for top up with an iPhone. Helpline were aware if the issue and the workaround was to use google chrome browser to access the EasyGo website, log in to your account with email address/password and top up your account.

Obviously something's not right with the app on my phone - once I go into My Wallet, the only two options that appear are My Subscription and Coupons. There's no "Deposit Funds" option there. The top-up I did earlier today was via the Easygo website (having previously entered card details the other day) and then using the hamburger icon in the top left, then Payment > Top Up Funds.

EasyGo have won a pretty significant contract award for the Highland Council, Moray Council and Aberdeenshire Council areas for the next 20 years. Looks like they'll be adopting the existing council chargers currently on the Chargeplace Scotland network.

What's the current price per kwh at the EasyGo chargers?

I see my local Lidl has a few.

Lidl price is normally 50c/kWh. Everywhere else is around 73c I think. Although they were doing special night rates as well.

Just checked their app, is there a connection fee of 0.27 to charge as well?

Yeah. Not really an issue unless you're only taking in one kWh.

EasyGo to roll out domestic shared charging scheme

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/2025/06/09/easygo-to-roll-out-domestic-shared-charging-scheme/

Interesting project. I'll be watching to see how they manage overstaying situations. And if the charger is installed on private property (which i presume it is not), how public liability insurance works.

I rented out my home charger multiple times to strangers through the goplugable platform. Typically driveway is free daytime and I have CCTV and can remotely turn on/off home charger. I am not really sure it's worth this trial when they could just spend the money on a dozen slow chargers in a council car park. I don't think the idea scales long term.

Sounds problematic from insurance perspective as has been pointed out i.e. inviting a stranger to undertake activities on your property whilst your not there - even with CCTV. These things are all well and good until they arent.

Besides the usual risks of public liability, property damage or damage to third-party vehicles, you would also want to check that your insurer doesn't deem this a business activity (even if small scale) and potentially exclude this from cover altogether.

As much as I like the idea, it seems a lot of risk for probably not much more than loose change.

Sounds like a potential cash cow for Easygo on the backs of property owners. They’re public chargers are almost always more expensive than anyone else as it is.

It's basically just a PR exercise IMO. The actual take-up on this will be close to zero, but EasyGo get their names in the paper and into public consciousness.

As said, a much easier and more lucrative exercise would be to install these in public areas, or shopping centre carparks etc.

Yes, it’s a stunt. I’d wonder about the long term future of Easygo. A lot of their DC chargers don’t seem to get a lot of use. They’re also generally slow and expensive.

The scheme will launch as a pilot in selected locations, with participation open to homeowners in Kilcock, Co. Kildare; Dingle, Co. Kerry; and the Dublin neighbourhoods of Finglas Stoneybatter and Phibsborough.

I think the council don't want to roll out on street AC chargers so this is a trial at avoiding them doing this.

Stoneybatter isn’t noted for its driveways. Where are these chargers going to be mounted to avoid cables trailing across the footpath?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,111 ✭✭✭zg3409

Businesses with parking and homes that want to share our their driveway, instead of council proving on street slow charging or charging in public car parks. I know someone from the area and cannot go EV as no off Street parking. Has workplace charging but not ideal if you need a top up at the weekend. Also workplace charging is somewhat expensive.

My point is that, in Stoneybatter, businesses tend overwhelmingly not to have parking and houses tend overwhelmingly not to have driveways. So it's hard to see why that would be a pilot location.

Surely that's exactly why it would be a pilot location.

No point picking the perfect area to prove if something is a runner.

First-of-its-kind? Thought there was something similar before
