It is great to see that the cracks are starting to show finally and there obviously are plenty of ministers with similar feelings to us.
No doubt the messages many of us have sent to our TD's have been heard and are likely getting discussed behind closed doors.

People are starting to realize that lockdown is not working and there is no end in sight. New solutions are badly needed.

The advise to the elderly is a good start. But the message needs to be very strong.

We need to really crack down on factories that are causing the spread of the virus. Random inspections, temperature checks, random tests, closures etc.

We have to start opening up while there is still a country left to be salvaged.

    From that Indo article;

"A Cabinet source said there were concerns at the highest ranks of Cabinet that Nphet had "departed from the European mainstream in the severity of their advice" as they are "under pressure from academic commentators as opposed to solid science"."

I think that is a statement on the OTT reaction to covid in general, it is not based on data and solid science, but from listening to just those academics who have niche areas of expertise unrelated to social and economic considerations. This Cabinet "source" is a voice of reason.

Talking about stopping kids sport, there has been very little transmission of the virus in kids sport so far

    NPHET should now be disbanded.
Older people are fairly well looking after themselves, they don’t need to be told what to do

    Where was this rumoured?

If that happens they’ve genuinely lost their marbles.

Wouldn’t surprise me though stop all underage games but get kids back to school is the mantra now.

    Unbelievable if that happens.

Yes better they be locked at home watching tv all day getting no exercise!
Sounds like another Nphet nugget of gold

Reckon Leo has lost it with Nphet. There was some evidence of that in what he’s been saying about herd immunity etc. They would never ever say anything like that. They’ve gone way beyond their brief, should have zero public role and all their recommendations communicated to the public via cabinet only after approval.

Leo is probably thinking of his turn at the big chair again and the economic and social mess he'll inherit the way things are going - even though he and his (previous) Government set us off on this course in March.

I wonder will he take another crack at imposing water charges? :p That worked out well for Enda and co last time!

Tired of their public finger wagging and them going beyond their brief. They should have no public role whatsoever

Yes Leo and co created a monster in Nphet but they never expected it all to go on so long. It was ok for a brief period but now there’s a democratic deficit with unelected officials with a massive role in running the country - for me that just isn’t tenable.
No they won’t touch water charges- but may well increase other taxes for sure

Only has taken them 5 months to figure out what was obvious from the start.

"Nphet has also recommended that only six people should be permitted in a home from three separate houses in a bid to clamp down on house parties and outdoor home gathering should be reduced to 15 people."

Outdoor home gathering , that wouldn't include kids sports etc

Lockdown the first time was the right approach as we knew nothing about the virus. Now we are wiser and smarter we should be on top of it

If the zeroCovid/pro lockdown lobby are wrong about existing immunity then it’ll go down as the most costly miscalculation in living memory.

Schools should not open at any cost. They seem hell bent on getting them open

Unfortunately they are the ones most vulnerable from the virus. This is an undeniable scientific fact. They will have to take their own responsibility.

They should open. Kids need a normal life and education brings stability back to them.

If you see kids at sport now , they are delighted to be back

What country do you live in? Ireland is not in "lockdown", pretty much everything is open, that is the problem.

But you are entirely correct that we need to crack down on places where the virus is being spread and we absolutely have to ensure that tracking and tracing really is done in 48 hours. We need to tell those contacts to stay at home, not the older half of the population.

At what cost though? The reopening of the country as a whole is being sacrificed to facilitate schools

Rte radio 1 is utter ****e...tuned in out of curiosity. A Dr Lynch from cork hospital who doesn’t deal with Covid or had to deal with any patients with Covid (shes a paediatrician) ranting on the usual scare mongering.
“Their listeners are angry” lol that’s because they’re ancient! Chasm in society that was inevitable due to the nature of the illness. They want to lockdown young people!

Hopefully schools opening will expose the farce of continued lockdown.

It's months past time people figured out the obvious.

Seem to be moving away at last from New broad lockdowns which are a failure. The more vulnerable to cocoon

Yep.. one of the texters compared it to how we lock up criminals/prisoners rather than the victims

Who will provide the services and taxes if we did that.

Hopefully schools opening will expose the farce of continued lockdown.

It's months past time people figured out the obvious.

The death rate is 0% for kids of school going age. When schools open, people who are still WFH and are out for their daily walks. Maybe they didn't go on a sun holiday in August and have not had a good blowout on a night out for months or whatever too. They will see schoolkids in big groups at bus stops, messing and playing etc and these adults will think "why am I not allowed to go out and live my life?". The data won't show that covid is a problem, for obvious reasons, which will further reinforce that adult's view that they do not feel they should have to continue to make such big sacrifices while others do not have to do the same. More people then stop taking the guidance so seriously which snowballs and very soon there are some lip service behaviours like masks in shops or half hearted social distancing in queues but people have generally gotten back to normal.

The beginning of schools returning is the end of strict restrictions. The government putting all their eggs in one basket for schools is reckless though as they will need to reopen pubs, get rid of social distancing on public transport, open up the green list to the EU, among other things all around the same time, instead of gradually over the summer. A large cohort of the public are still terrified of covid and talk about it like it is deathly to get it so they won't be easily coaxed back out of their homes which means the government better have its blank chequebook ready.

Sorry but older people are going to have to take their own responsibility. You can’t shut down the working and school going population solely to suit them. It’s harsh but they are the ones most vulnerable and that can’t be changed
