It's our national inferiority complex.. been that way for generations. On local levels it manifests as begrudgery and "keeping up with the Joneses" in good times, or bothering about what they're getting or "getting away with" in the bad.

At national level it's things like Leo saying in the Dail this week that we're ahead of Europe with our responses, or how progressive we were with our mixed-race, openly gay PM, or how we were among the first with smoking bans and shopping bag levies, how "everyone loves the Irish" etc etc

"We" have a need for validation and approval from our perceived "betters". It's also why we absorb the worst of social media crusading and US-led identity politics/culture wars and try to apply them here - like what DOES generations of racial tension in the USA have to do with Ireland? But yet we still had to have a BLM protest in Dublin anyway - which funny enough no-one complaining about anti-restrictions marches seemed to have an issue with... hmm

But we've been at this self-governance stuff for only about 100 years. No surprise really that as a country we have a long way to mature yet.

People need to grow up and realise we are actually a well developed country and very well perceived internationally. Have some bloody self confidence sell ourselves as such.
If you believe we are backwards, disobedient and reckless then it becomes a self fulling prophecy of doom.

I can't for the life of me get the mentality that the Portuguese (as the previous poster suggested) are somehow inherently better than us. Doubt he's every set foot in Portugal outside tourist resorts

Gardaí are as gutless and cowardly as our government. Checkpoints all over Dublin today annoying and holding up people trying to go about their daily business.

No wonder very few people have respect for them anymore.

Did people ever respect them? Invisible all year every year, and as soon as they get a bit of power they're everywhere.

That's fair enough. But for anyone who is considering emigration Russia might be worth exploring.

    Im considering North Korea.

Citizens there seem to have much more freedom, less of a nanny state as such.

In China they're having pool parties, while I imagine that going to the pool in Ireland is a horrible experience.

Cannabis is 100% legal in North Korea it grows wild, might be a nanny state but it's got it's perks. Fcukers here won't even let you have a pint.

They've become trendy. It's not that they're afraid per se. One even sees people wearing a mask while driving alone.

So trendy in fact Louis Vuitton have one for the low down price of
    $961 :eek::D

The French fashion house announced this week that it will be releasing its elegant $961 take on PPE as part of the label's 2021 Cruise collection, available in stores worldwide on October 30th. The shield is composed of an elastic monogrammed strap that goes around the wearer's head with a moveable shield attached by golden studs engraved with the LV logo. The shield itself also comes trimmed in Vuitton's signature monogram print, can be flipped upwards to be worn as a peaked hat, and also comes with transition lens technology so it can go from clear to dark depending on the level of sunlight.

Ive been swimming in DUblin, at a pool, same as it always was really, apart from no hairdrying facilities.

Pool wasnt packed, you book online, can see how many are booked in. Its grand and a great option for people who need gentle exercise.

Can I just ask you a question . Why did it actually bother you that other people are wearing masks ? If someone chooses to wear a mask for some reason I fail to see what is bothering you

It bothers me personally because I can be fined or jailed if I don't. I'd have much the same mindset as those Russians in the article above - wear one if you feel better about it, but if not that's fine too.

This quote is one we could all learn from over here:
“It is better to get out and live normally and perhaps even get sick than to stay at home forever doing nothing,”

The hysteria created here around masks and the attitudes towards people not wearing them is disgraceful, but then the Irish don't like anyone/anything that stands out or is different so the fear of CV-19 feeds into this attitude too.

Personally and to be blunt.. I'm not sick, haven't been sick, live alone and WFH 5 days a week so there are times I don't go anywhere for days sometimes. I am no risk to anyone, and at this point I'd take my chances if I caught this thing if it meant getting back to normal - so sick am I of the nonsense, divisiveness, and makey-uppy "responses" to this "deadly" virus at this stage.

But you shouldn't have to book online, in my opinion. You should be able to walk into the pool.

Great post. The attitude of those young Russians is refreshing. I've met a few Russians down through the years and I was impressed by their attitude of "not giving a s***' (by that I don't mean that they weren't respectful of others, but that they didn't take any crap) and their doing their own thing. And you can see that in their reaction to those ghastly masks. The best words in that NYT article are 'mostly ignored' regarding the stupid restrictions.

And Putin shook hands with people during the (maskless) Victory Parade a few months ago. I imagine most people in Ireland would be afraid to shake another person's hand.

To force those than chose not to into jail is wrong on so many levels. The mask is a sign of compliance nothing more, any old mask will do, yea right it will.

    Compliance? How so?

Compare the disdain for those horrible things in Russia (see the link to the article in NYT I posted) and the obsession with them in Ireland.

    Emigration is the solution.

Obsession? Nah. We don't even have to wear them outdoors. It's mandatory to do so in other countries...and it's enforced.

But you know what I mean. I said ten, but I might as well have said a hundred.

All you have to is love at level 1 of the stupid plan. Muzzles still required. Says it all. I wouldn't care about any of the other things. It's the rag that's the problem.
