Shut the pubs was the cry at the start.
See people are still drinking - shut down takeaway pints.
See people are still drinking - shut the off licenses.
See people still drinking - shut the border they're getting it up north.
See people still drinking - round up all the beer and burn it.

So instead of drinking takeaway pints, they drink cans........ Genius.

People can drink cans any time they want. Is drinking cans a covid risk? What’s your point?

Drinking the pints? No. Standing around in big groups getting drunk without social distancing is a risk.

It’s just an outdoor house party. But drinking the pints isn’t a risk.

    What was your point?

That banning takeaway pints is a completely useless procedure while you allow people to gather in groups outside.

I wouldnt say useless. Alcohol lowers inhibitions and their ability to make rational decisions. A drunk mob is far more dangerous than a sober one.

But good point on giving gardai power to break up groups. They were offered similar powers in summer and refused to take them - a huge mistake.

Cited lack of powers to enforce and lack of enforcment in general by the gardai has been a huge frustrating roundabout for many throughout this pandemic.

Yes, I understand all that, but what would be the point in banning 1 particular type of serving vessel? People aren't standing around in 3 degree weather because of the quality of a fresh poured pint.

If they're going out to meet friends, they'll continue to do that, just with coffee or cans, and as long as they're allowed do it they will.

If the gardai spent the first weekend of this pouring every open container down the drain, you'd have eradicated the problem.

What reason would people have to gather on the streets if takeaway pints weren’t allowed?

    Big bag of cans.

People are drinking because they have to meet their friends outside, they're not meeting their friends outside because the pints of heino from pyg are to die for........

So you either ban all off sales, you break up groups standing around or you enforce the bye laws. You're either forcing the issue indoors or your changing how people drink outdoors.

Folks there is no point in talking to those people who want pubs kept open. They quite clearly have a drink problem and no amount of talking sense will make them change their minds about this.

Pubs have been closed for a week and we're not talking about them right now. Have you been drinking??

No, I have restraint. I can see that drinking on the streets or in a pub is a horrific idea at the moment.

The second option is impossible right now so you're grand there.

Whats so frustrating is were basically been told 'right lads no chance of any sort of pub been open for Paddys day'

Imagine getting a bit of incentive and saying 'right lads if we get over the line for this lockdown then it might be enough to get pubs open in March"

Remember the teacher like threats over the summer because of a few people drinking on the streets. Pathetic

Never mind your health or getting back to work, let's suppress the virus so we can get **** faced on an arbitrary day in March.

My position on opening pubs has never changed, but if yours was the prevailing attitude, I'd gladly never see one open again.

He's not saying alcohol or cans, the post I replied to specifically mentioned takeaway pints.
I just hope that later today, even the gasto pubs get told in no uncertain manner that take away pints are off the menu for the forseeable future, we really don't need the crowds in the streets with the health implications of an uncontrolled venue with no facilities whatsover.

Yeah I agree. Is gathering in groups allowed at the moment?

    Allowed no, enforced, also no.

Do we really need to be treated like children, to be given a incentive like that? That's pathetic, to treat a nation like a child at the dinner table - you can have your desert if you clear your plate.

And then if the pubs didn't open in March you'd be the first on here moaning that you didn't get what was promised.

Who gives a toss about pubs being open on paddys day so deco and anto can get smashed and start fights all over Dublin? This country has a serious problem with alcohol and its time it was tackled properly.

One post in this thread said its an assault on their social life not having pubs open, how sad and pathetic is that?

I agree it is the small minority who run it for everyone but that minority will never learn and will always be the rebels

Bottom line is that pubs will not be reopening before Easter at the very earliest and most likely later that that. You should learn to accept that.

Have you anything to support this hypothesis or are you simply making things up as you go along? My money is on the latter.
