If you book a table for six with three couples, they are all sitting at one table a lot closer than 2m apart. You can currently have 10 people in your home from 4 different households...

And if you and your social circle are predominantly single people who live alone?

What forms of socializing are currently missing?

Physical contact with others who don't live in your household. Anyone who lives alone is seriously missing this, and to suggest that it's hyperbolic to say that this can cause depression over time is ridiculous.

    https://www.tmc.edu/news/2020/05/touch-starvation/

When physical contact becomes limited—or, in some cases, eliminated—people can develop a condition called touch starvation or touch deprivation.

“When someone is [touch] starved, it’s like someone who is starved for food,” Shah said. “They want to eat, but they can’t. Their psyche and their body want to touch someone, but they can’t do it because of the fear associated with, in this case, the pandemic.”

Touch starvation increases stress, depression and anxiety, triggering a cascade of negative physiological effects. The body releases the hormone cortisol as a response to stress, activating the body’s “flight-or-fight” response. This can increase heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and muscle tension, and can suppress the digestive system and immune system—increasing the risk of infection.

People who are stressed or depressed, perhaps because of lack of touch, will have problems sleeping, Shah said.

“Every single medical disease including heart attack, diabetes, hypertension, asthma—every single physical disease—is altered if you are more anxious, more depressed or if you have more mental health issues,” he said,

Long term, he added, going an extended period without positive physical touch can even lead to post-traumatic stress disorder.

It's been widely, regularly and comprehensively demonstrated time and time again that social isolation is dangerous for both physical and mental health. Long term social distancing rules, as demonstrated by this and many other articles I could cite, causes similar consequences - particularly when there is no hope or light at the end of the tunnel, and others harp on about "the new normal" as if people are expected to live without close contact with other humans for the rest of their lives. There needs to be an end game, and it needs to be openly talked about.

Well if that’s the case I’m going to take up Swedish language classes ASAP and will be Sweden bound. Kinda want to live instead of exist.

The restrictions are the same. They can go out for a meal and a few pints. They can visit each other. Am I missing the point of your post?

Yup but sure we'll be called snowflakes etc anyway. When I'm sure the people saying it did the exact same in their 20s.

I'd have easily attended at least 1 sporting event a week and probably 2 or 3 festivals over the summer, so at the moment there's very little social outlets available which mentally is proving difficult. Not going to go around to other peoples houses because that's exactly what we're being asked not to do.

Have a read of the guidelines, up to 10 people from up to 4 households is the guidance

I've read the guidelines, for a short period of time as has always been the guidance, your not supposed to be hanging around someones house for hours.

Short period of time isn't being there most of the afternoon/evening to watch football, have a BBQ and a few drinks, thats not being advised.

Main point anyway that this stemmed from earlier is yes many social outlets aren't available and for some of us including myself that is proving difficult as being in my 20s the social circle personally is sporting events and concerts.

For others not having these has absolutely no impact, but for some like myself its a huge social outlet no longer there.

But sure someone will probably just say snowflake to all of that because it doesn't impact them at all.

I cant wait for the day myself and friends can go to football on a Friday night and GAA over the weekend. Hopefully when the limit goes to 500 that'll happen.

It really depends what the definition of a short period of time is. In terms of the universe, man has only existed for a short period of time.

Yes. The point of my post is that having to stay two metres away from all other humans is soul destroying and unsustainable for an indefinite period.

Unless someone knows me really well, getting closer than two metres is verging on an invasion of my personal space.
If two people are agreeable, what's to stop them getting closer than two metres? If they are in a restaurant, they'll be seated closer than two metres. If they're at each others houses, who is going to be checking to see that they are remaining two metres apart.

Agreed. The difference being that speed limits are defined in law. A vague, "short period of time" is meaningless.

It’s not all other humans though. It’s reducing less than 2 meter contacts for more than 15 minutes as much as possible, and being aware of those you are in contact with.

Question for you all... If/when you call to other people's home, do you keep 2 metres from them?

I've been calling to my family home, and they are not adhering to the 2 metres. I didn't mention it because it seemed awkward.

No, and nobody I know is either.

Just look at restaurants and you'll see people aren't socially distancing from friends and family.

    Thanks. I've noticed that too.

I'm a bit confused if this goes against the advice, as it seems so prevalent.

Is it just me or is it getting an awful lot quieter out there lately?

I went to woodies at 6pm this evening. Car park was empty, no queue, about 7 customers in the store. It was very bizarre. Place is open until 9pm.

Was in a popular shopping centre on Saturday afternoon and it was very calm as well.

Stayed in a hotel just outside Dublin last weekend and it was dead. Myself and my wife and two other couples were the only people down for the early bird dinner.

I think people are getting a bit sick of it all. I went to a restaurant the other day. I was ordered to use sanitizer as soon as I walked in. Once I did that, they took my temperature...

I think it is very worrying. Possibly the weather contributing as well.

It goes against the advice but the advice goes against human nature. Social distancing to the extreme it was upheld in March and April was never going to last long term in my opinion.

Until we have a vaccine, this is what we need to do to keep each other safe. People throughout history have had periods where they have had to suffer, many to a much greater degree than this. It'll end when we have good treatments and vaccines, both of which are currently on track for delivery by next year.

The virus doesn't know you are family or strangers, it'll transfer to whoever it can find. You can't police what others do, you can only protect yourself and your family.

You are worried about what? Using sanitizer/being responsible?

I don't think you understand. People are fed up with this. Fed up. The government need to do something, because people are fed up. Just completely fed up. The government need to legislate tomorrow to end this pandemic. Just tell the virus to go away, we're fed up with it.

At least I think that's what their argument is. It's either that or the argument is we drop all attempts to control the spread of the virus and accept the huge suffering which will follow. Because they're fed up having to use hand sanitiser in a restaurant.

How busy do you think a restaurant which makes no attempt at protecting their customer's health will be?

Would you have confidence that a restaurant which makes no effort on the front of house is following health guidelines in the kitchens?

Will their staff be happy to turn up for work? Would you be happy if your son or daughter was on the waiting staff?

We have 5 in ICU in the entire country. I wouldn’t be too worried about Covid.

No need for even half of this nonsense.

Why do you think we have only 5 in ICU? What would be happening if many of the people in this thread had their way?

You're willing to risk another widespread outbreak, lockdowns, hundreds in ICU because you don't want to be asked to use hand sanitiser?

look we all know this thing is a deadly killer , BUT to those over 75 and thise with underlying conditions. to the rest the chances of death espically those under 45 and no health isssues are very very slim, no more chance than of hepititas c or HIV back in the day, much bigger chance unfortunatly of various forms of cancer. you see the death rate is very low but were getting into 40s and 50s /day cases. surely this is normal and to be expected? remember the two mantras back in march, COCOONING and FLATTEN THE CURVE, why do we not hear these anymore? its because the government and NYPHET have become addicted to the power and now are using it in a police state way for their own agendas. ICUs are not overran and wont be.
