folks - I have been following this thread with interest but I am confused.

What the hell is happening on May 5th. Have I missed something. Has something been announced

The country will be open for business again. The lockdown Nazis will lose thier minds, unable to rejoin normal society due to becoming too dependant on and accustomed to the draconian totalitarian regime.

Rubbish, most of our cases are now classed as "recovered" so the number of active infections is dwindling.

Ireland has now surpassed Switzerland with number of cases per million
We passed Italy and Switzerland in just 3 days

    1. Spain
    2. Belgium
    3. Ireland
    4. Switzerland
    5. Italy

And still traffic is up over the past few days, some non-essential shops are open etc.

It's understandable, people's jobs are at risk and they are worried.

That's different to those who seem to believe May 5th will be some cosmic event.

There is also an element of people worried about keeping the new normal and not being able to cope with change.

It’s something we don’t consider but in a lot of cases there are people being bombarded and bombarding themselves with so much fear that the very idea of lifting restrictions terrifies them. In a lot of cases there are people for example who fear going back out again with less restrictions as it’s going to kill them or their family or someone they know.

I mean there was an anology the other night on here that lifting restrictions was akin to removing a parachute which literally translates to lifting restrictions means you’re going to die and loads of people thought it was a great analogy.

We need to be mindful of everyone going forward, there’s no right or wrong reaction in this unprecedented situation.

In as much as there are people not coping with lockdown, likewise ther will be those scared of easing restrictions.

As expected the parachute analogy was totally misunderstood
The message was that we slowed down the infection but it's too early to go back to normal life, we haven't landed, that was the message.

Well to be fair they did say that should conditions allow we're quite well placed to bounce back. It's going to be bad but its completely different to a normal recession

You are absolutely correct, this is not like a normal recession. In previous recessions we've had the release valve of being able to export a lot of unemployed people looking for work. We have no such luxury this time as it's a global contraction that we haven't experienced in our lifetime.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

In relation to those who have recovered, Dr Holohan said 8,377 had recovered in the community, while 856 had been discharged from hospital.

Shove your fake news up your hole.

    Exactly.
This is a very soft lock down and people aren't even complying that much. A friend of mine took the bus and went to the office on Friday because he was bored working from home, then he was weirded out by the amount of people on the bus

Worldometer is not official, expect that to move to what the CMO gave earlier.

They've given out the recovered numbers this evening so kindly check the official stats there.

    Your post is wrong

agree and I am guilty of that myself. The queues are gone from my local supermarket but still social distancing. The hardware shops are open - just running differently. The local takeaways are delivery only.

I hope the 2km restriction does lift though - I miss some retail shops. Even browsing lol.

Coffee shops are open but takeaway only.

It is coming back..slowly and surely.

Worldometer isn't official, the community reports their countries cases. It was saying we had over 292 cases in ICU earliuer today until i reported it was 152 and they changed it. They then changed it to over 315 again today because some dope keeps feeding them the wrong figures

Endless lockdown isn’t a solution. Everyone with any sense knows that. We have however managed to put in a serious firebreak and we are in a position to begin returning to life as normal but it has to be done in a risk minimising way.

If we start with the big events and the high risk stuff we just undo all of the firebreak slog.

Until we’ve a vaccine or effective drugs this is going to have to be managed through social distancing and sensible precautions.

I’m not seeing many “lockdown Nazis” other than in debates online on the extremes.

Society wouldn’t work at all if this level of restriction went on indefinitely. It’s never been a proposed solution. This was ALWAYS a firebreak.

The less of the crazy US debate we import here the better. It needs to be an Irish solution to Irish needs and with the best science and use of our best strength - our pragmatism!

Did you read the article I linked
Have you read Goldman Sachs latest report
Have you read about what is happening oil
what is going to happen our economy will be the biggest economic shock since records began
Bigger than 2008 and 2008 saw Lehman’s brothers collapse and that alone nearly collapsed everything

I get it some people think this is good and we can remake our economies to be more fairer and just which is the Biggest load of BS and these people are so gullible
All that happens in depressions are the divide between the haves and have nots gets bigger

If we are running a large deficit then the state has 2 choices tax or cuts
This time unlike 2008 the state will have to introduce huge cuts aswell as increasing taxes

That means the pension and carers and jobseekers and disability will need cutting
The deficit will be so large we will have no choice
I expect public expenditure on council housing and rent allowance to be slashed
Working people will not accept taxes this time and no cuts to the dole
There will be war if that happened

And you forget about Germany bailing us out - if anything what is ahead of us could see the break up of the European Union
Cast your minds back to 2008 and the years that followed and how that period nearly ended Europe Union - this is considerably worse and while people will Argue there is no banking crisis this time, they are wrong because the housing market is going to collapse
Pay cuts will come and extra taxes will come and people will stop paying their mortgages and will be swimming in negative equity

You say we have put in a serious firebreak and pragmatism is needed and less of the crazy US debate
You have it wrong - what is needed is for people like you who agree with the current crisis plan to wake the **** up

    same here.

I would consider more shops opening and the 2 km restrictions to go away as good candidates for easing the restrictions - it goes without saying that we should all be very careful and continue the social distancing as much as possible.

I don't know, just something that would make sense. I can't think of something else that would be easy to implement with low(er) risk

They way I think about it is: if some shops reopen and the 2 km restriction stays in place, for me it won't make any difference because I live in a rural area and the closest town (Drogheda) is 4 km away. That's why I'm thinking that the 2km restriction could be lifted completely or, at the very least, been extended to more km allowed.

    well I would hope so

in my locality the following still remain closed (that I can think of)
    hairdressers
    pubs
    construction site

    everything else is
open with social distancing in place
    open for delivery/collection only
open but working from home/emergency only

it is quite doable but I miss the simple things

Great admiration for the businesses that have diversified - even some pubs are open with are delivery/collection only (beer/wine and food). Buiding itself is closed.
