Leo Varadkar said the Government was keen to reopen schools in the early phases of easing restrictions, but as the plan to do this had not been completed he did not want to speculate.

Not great news really for the doom merchants on here.

Remembering that there are still plenty of 50+ people in employment.

We should have the hospital capacity for 50-60 age group. But if someone has a known underlying condition, we should continue to pay them the covid19 welfare payment of 350 a week to stay at home.

Its about minimising the risk, you aren't going to eliminate it, just minimise it over the long term - cocooning will have to remain, as will social distancing. Also masks on public transport should be obligatory as they appear to be in Spain.

Seems to be a lot more people out and about in Dublin today compared to the last couple of weeks.

The weather is too good. Why would people not spend time outdoors?

The only measure left is to ban exercise, otherwise people will continue walking around outside, in what is now a vast open prison.

Do people think a decision regarding what happens on May5th has already been made?

Re-opening schools would be foolish. Its not an industry where tens of thousands have lost jobs or gone on the dole.

It would actually be a stupid move to re-open schools but not pubs.

A rural pub in a locality with next to no cases, eg Leitrim, the risk of catching covid19 would be 1 in a million.

But a busy school in the middle of Dublin? It goes up massively.

I more so mean that the city centre is slightly busier than recent days, it looks like a few are back at work in offices. Car parks busier than the last few weeks and so on. Obviously it's nothing near normality but its notably different to a couple of weeks back. I'd say some places are trying to setup social distancing measures in the workplace and test them out.

How is this not the headline news
This is going to cost billions
In the short term at least 5 billion
When the 350 reverts to 200 and hoping we get the numbers down to half million over time an extra 5 billion per year on welfare minimum

Forget new schools new roads housing and health projects
Our economy just traveled back in time 35 years
For those who don’t remember that time - say your prayers because things are about to get very real very fast

Oh your back. Can you explain your linkdump from yesterday quack?

I would like to think that they already have different actions planned based on a few different scenarios.

Schoolchildren would be a lot smarter than some of the gobshìtes you'd find staggering about in pubs.

I would say discussions this week based on numbers being at x, y or z on May 5th.

After next weekend they will have a fair idea where numbers are going.

If you want a very rapid spread of covid 19 particularly in urban areas, go ahead and re-open schools. Just about the number 1 way to achieve it.

Just in a whole load of "what if" scenarios! Too early as they say!

How can it spread if it's not there?

1 asymptomatic child can potentially infect everyone in a confined classroom including the teacher.

We are 6 months into this and the level of ignorance around covid19 is still mind boggling. There are still people who think children can't be infected as an example.

It's never going to be killed off. If that happened there would be a once off flu season and that would be it, the virus would die off, and that would be the end of it.

In fact the flu season ends when the numbers drop but they keep circulating in a low background fashion and then, with the start of winter, as people stay indoors, they accelerate again.

Somebody better tell the experts that tobefrank from the interweb disagrees with their plan.

that, or people will go back to work soon enough.

I have some time for experts, although even they can be wrong.

Varadkar and Harries are not virologists or experts in this field. If they were they certainly wouldn't allow people travel from covid 19 hotspots like London for a mass funeral gathering.

They don't claim to be but they are in constant contact with those who are. They are the political face of this.

I wouldn't make any pronouncements on something we've only known about for 5 months. It hasn't even completed one cycle.

The Danish way of opening school was to keep everybody in the class at least 2 metres apart and limit interaction in the schoolyard. This would mean, I suppose, that classes are broken up across the week. That might make sense.

I just did. Its a virus and therefore is going to transmit like a virus. If you are suggesting it will be totally destroyed you should look at how hard that is to do, see SmallPox etc.

Ah what’s a few billion - I mean you only get one measly hospital for that.

We really don't know. It could mutate itself into a more harmless version of its current form and become inconsequential.

    No definitely not

Varadkar has said the plan won't be ready until late April/early May

Goes to show they had no plan bar extend the restrictions for three weeks after Easter

I imagine they'll look to how Germany and others are faring with their easing of lockdowns. And I am quite okay with that approach.

There is only such a clamour for schools to open because a lot of mammies who mollycoddle their chaps can't seem to formulate any way to keep them up to date with their school lessons.

I bet their wine o'clock schedule has been affected too.

Have classes via zoom. It will be a novelty that children might actually enjoy. In theory, the spacing out of classrooms seems fine, but in practise it could be a ticking time-bomb.

Crowd control of pubs, particularly during the day, and especially in rural areas, is a lot more doable. Most older gentlemen avoid the pub later in the evening when it gets crowded anyway.

    Yes that's an advantage alright

Still I'm not sure there is any idea where they want to get to and then whether the CMO etc will let them
