    Yes: surgical
Sage have come out and said what most of us suspected here - visors are basically useless.

I hope ireland re examine our policy on visors now. Most people in retail, and an increasing number of regular folk have been opting for them on the false pretense that they offer protection.

Let's hope we can be a bit faster in keeping up with the science this time.

We need experts to tell us what is obvious 3 months later :pac:

In lidl today, happy to report 100 % customer compliance. Couldn't say the same for the staff unfortunately, the check out girls were behind screens at least, but one employee was sauntering about the aisles with no protection.

Hopefully all will be masked up monday.

    Maybe she has an exemption?

Shouldn't be working on shop floor if that was the genuine reason.
Suggests they are likely to be highly vulnerable if infected.

I had the opposite experience in my local Lidl yesterday, staff were all wearing masks, but I'd say only about 25% of the customers were.

We did get somewhat lucky, perhaps in our timing of decisions, but what we did we did pretty well. I'd call that a success.
No. It's sold as a success, by the government (especially the previous one), by the media and by the people who don't look at details or apply scrutiny.

If you look at the details, for example ECDC data on cases and mortality you'll find that Ireland cases per capita and deaths per capita are both in the bottom of the league in the EU. That's hardly a success. You can call it a success only when comparing with the UK which is absolutely abysmal.

Czechia which closed borders and masked up early - 4 times less cases per capita and 10 times less deaths per capita.

Finland which closed borders early and socially distanced hardly - 3 times less cases per capita and 5.5 less deaths per capita.

Similar Norway, Greece, Austria, Denmark. And so on.

Given that I really welcomed the leadership and several hard decisions the new government has made quickly in succession, very pleasantly surprised. Sadly the previous government didn't have this courage in April, it would have saved billions and hundreds of lives.

I understand it's going to be a new Statutory Instrument under the Irish Health Act.

Is it like an executive order?
So it will be a legal instrument of lower order not a bill per se but still legally valid, if I understand correctly.

    Who introduced them?

    It's so obvious they're are only marginally effective - there's a f*cking bloody hole in them :)

    Secondary legislation
The Acts passed by the Oireachtas are the primary legislation of Ireland. There is another category of laws known as secondary legislation or statutory instruments.

The Oireachtas does not enact statutory instruments. Instead, the power to enact them is delegated to certain people or bodies including Government Ministers, local authorities and regulatory bodies.

Except there ain't no law requiring you to wear a mask from Monday!

There is however new legislation covering the three counties on lockdown.

Back from local Dunnes, 95% compliance. Thumbs up. Unmasked are the odd ones now and will be the centre of attention - ignore and avoid at a large distance.

Staff not so great, maybe 80%.

    Yes: to protect others
Just witnessed an anti mask protest go by my apartment with RTE Fake News on one banner and something about vaccines on another.

I'd be worried about the level of stupidity but there was only a small group, so leave them at it. Let them have their shout.

Why are they not making masks mandatory in other indoor places?

Don't really need a law to fry someone :D Anyway if people need the law to make them wear a masks, wash their hands, keep SD etc. We are all fcuked

Seems to be fairly universal usage in retail Cork City & suburbs from what I can see.

Just give them time, look how long did it take to reach the point where we are now and still no enforcement, so any freedom warrior will do whatever he wants. Local lockdown done and we'll see how that will go..

What would people do if you took a job where you were told that masks are worn and then turns out they aren't being worn?

I can't walk out from a job either because I'm not entitled to receive social welfare. But I don't feel safe either.

Is there anything I can do?

    Report to the HSA.

Or flamethrower option :D only kidding. Peaceful person here. How does it go when you report business to HSA, is it totally anonymous? I've seen how some reports went in my company (not covid related) and the outcome wasn't great

They're way, way cheaper to manufacture and re-use than masks so naturally businesses will substitute them, unless customers /staff / insurers say not good enough.

But visors are pretty useless on it's own, not gonna say completely. Might be kinda good if somebody coughs directly to your face, but even in that scenario...run

Can I ask for anyone wearing masks for long periods in work what ones have you found most comfortable?

The soft-loop around-the-ear ones from Boots
    https://www.boots.ie/health-pharmacy/surgical-reusable-face-masks

It's a cotton mesh which my co-workers and I found easier on the ears, and easier to work with than the KN95s, or masks with thin elastic around the ears.
(Though some with smaller faces prefer the KN95)
(Specs are https://www.winnermedical.com/portal/products/products-item/Surgical%20face%20mask%20with%20soft%20earloop if you need them)
