That is so sad. May he rest in peace.

    How is that logical?

They changed the criteria as there were far too many negative tests and that only wasted tests.

So with new criteria then they're increasing the likelihood of people having it and therefore positives would increase.

Ok, I must be missing something so?

Have they not made the testing criteria more strict, i.e. they are only testing people that have multiple sympthoms?

Thus, if they are still testing at the same volume, and still getting results on the same timelines, more a higher percentage of tests would be positive?

Apologies if my understanding is off here?

It was reported by local radio news, I'm sure maybe the newspaper sites also have it

To be clear he was Finance minister of one of the German Länder, not of Germany. But anyway that is shocking.

There's so many reports of people waiting on a test or results, I wouldn't be hopeful that the figures are a true reflection of our current situation.

Agree entirely. My point is that it is one of a few data points that we have available. And the data is largely consistent right now - even it if might end up completely worthless when we look back on this.

Because it is a continuous service that is running 24/7.
Some labs might get through 300 samples a day one day and 400 the next depending on staff levels, number of tests coming in, reagents available etc. It's not a fixed throughput, and more labs may be coming on stream or offering a limited service until all their staff are trained to run it.

    I got it from Coyote:

Again there is a difference between testing and processing those test. It seems the HSE has not published these numbers. Hopefully they are not hiding a poor testing regime but we dont know unfortunately.

The HSE disclosed that 15,500 people are waiting to be tested for Covid-19 since the Government changed the criteria for testing to people displaying two symptoms of the infection.

Among those waiting for a test 10,700 have an appointment and 4,800 are awaiting a test. There are 5,000 tests being carried out every day.

More than 33,000 people have been tested since March 16th.

The HSE has 46 testing centres in operation and a further six will come on stream next week. Up to 60,000 testing kits have been delivered and a further 100,000 will be delivered each week.

The number of tests to date (~33,000) is the number of people that have had a swab taken, lab processed and results released.

I think France just updates once a day? If so, also a big drop there like in Italy. Just 2600 new cases vs 4000 yesterday. Deaths are similar though at nearly 300.

My mum's birthday today. Can't celebrate. She's a nurse in a nursing home, so obviously needs to keep herself isolated as much as possible.

I'm going to leave her disinfected present on her doorstep, then wave from a distance.

I think this pandemic should be a lesson to people...

That lesson is, do not comment on or pass judgement on something/someone you have absolutely no clue about!

As you say, loads on here passed comment and judgement on something they hadn't a clue about and scoffed at the people making predictions, whom had actually read up on this particular subject.

Should serve as a lesson be put into practice for the future but alas, we know people are too arrogant and ignorant for that

It was 40,000 a week ago I thought I read.

    Seems a big drop

Yes it was quoted as been over 40k then they said the demand was in the 10s of thousands per day but we were only testing 2 or 3k so they tore up the list and started again, due to the high demand some tests were getting wasted but as the CMO said the positive cases figure is ultimatly meaningless it just allows them to contact trace but if you have symptoms you should be isolating as if you have it anyway.
I believe the numbers will be much higher than reported but the most important number is those in hospital and ICU and from reports hospitals are beginning to struggle also the HSE have a lot more info than the general public they know things like if there's other bugs going around in certain areas with similar symptoms or if they get a positive result in a rural area in west mayo and they have a lot of cases with similar symptoms they can crudely estimate a more realistic number, from the measures taken in the past week it would suggest they are'nt seeing the numbers as being as low a reported they seem to be still planningas if we'll hit the initial 15k estimate which is probably a more realistic figure

*"Recovered" rates are not reported by the Department of Health in the above link, these figures are taken from the Worldmeters and Johns Hopkins websites which use data suplied by the DoT to the ECDC under the WHO Guidelines for reporting. Recovered statistics can only be published as "recovered" following two successful tests of being clear of the virus under the WHO reporting guidelines, as a result it is likely the recovered data is skewed.
** Due to the above issues with reporting of revovered cases the number of active cases is also likely skewed.

The number of tests to date (~33,000) is the number of people that have had a swab taken, lab processed and results released.

If so that is better. Have you a link to that?

I see a lot of people posting here about the test figures and how nothing can be read from them because the criteria changed. Look at it this way. The criteria changed so that people needed to have more symptoms to get tested. But all that matteres is that we are catching a good chunk of people that are sick. Asymptomatic people or people who have mild symptoms are very unlikely to need hospital care anyway so catching those doesn't matter so much while we are all in relative lockdown anyway. Further down the road when we want to get the country moving again it matters to test as many people as possible. The fact that our numbers have plateaued at the 200-300 mark is good.

No. If you had persistent symptoms but no underlying health issue or no confirmed close contact you just stay home and isolate. You will not be tested unless you become so severely ill that you need hospital. And you need to be excessively bad to be admitted to hospital.

All of that only makes sense because our capacity for testing is woefully low. What makes sense it to do as the WHO have advised and test, test, test.
