I'm inclined to wonder if we shouldn't be following Sweden but with better protection for care homes and vulnerable.

Sweden has a population of 10 million and 6,000 Covid related deaths(most had underlying conditions), 0.06% of the population.

    There is no wondering needed.

What exactly is the idea of sterilising immunity? Has been mentioned a few times here

Yeah, serious symptoms that lasted for two days and now she is grand again. In one case after she suffered a fall while out exercising.

Sterilising immunity means that you are immune to the virus but also that you can't transmit it. Your body fights it off so quickly that it is effectively sterilised.

    That is my understanding anyway

What's everyone's thoughts on best estimation when the Irish public will - realistically - get a vaccine?

I'm approaching breaking point these last few days

My belief is that 2 or 3 vaccines will prove their effectiveness before year end 2020. That will at least gives us a good degree of hope for the future. I think it will be mid 2021 before the vaccines are widely available in Europe.

The good thing about this disaster atm is its quite likely we’ll begin vaccinating by the start of next year. Everyone’s waiting for the “there are no new cases today”.

Yes, I feel like we just need to get through another couple of months of this and then we'll start getting really good news.

We should know if we have working vaccines before the end of the year.

After that they have to be manufactured.

I think just knowing there is an end in sight will change things, even if we are still going up and down the curve.

I don't even think of a scenario where none of the several currently in phase 3 don't work, there's no point torturing yourself with something which thankfully looks unlikely.

Agreed, I think a lot of people are now just bogged down at the thought that it might never end.

Sweden has a population of 10 million and 6,000 Covid related deaths(most had underlying conditions), 0.06% of the population.

Ireland has a population of 5 million with 1789 Covid related deaths.

Even with almost 50% of Swedish households being single occupancy, per capita Sweden has 60% more Covid related deaths than Ireland.
The combined population of the other three Nordic countries is 16.75 million. Per capita Sweden has 7 times their combined total of 1239 Covid related deaths.

    So no wondering needed.

But this is a vaccine thread, so maybe more relevant that Sweden have placed an order with the Anglo Swedish company Astra Zeneca for 6 million vaccines with an option to buy a further 2 million. They are in discussions with other companies to purchase a further 10 million with the intention of commencing vaccinations early 2021.

A tiny, tiny percentage of the population of Sweden has been affected by Covid. Minuscule. Despite no lock downs, masks or antisocial distancing. That's a fact.

The beautiful thing is you will take the rushed, experimental vaccine and I won't. That fills me with joy.

Great response and more links would be really welcome?

Are you saying that the floppy structure is easily identifiable across all strains of Sars cov2 of which there are currently 6?
    https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/08/200803105246.htm

If so, fingers crossed, that sounds very promising.

    More links:

Flu and Rabies, mRNA vs classical inactivated - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5648897/?report=reader#!po=4.09836

The troubles we have with influenza and the current vaccines against it - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4362519/

In that article you linked they are using the term 'strain' in a rather loose manner, not to say there is an actual definition for what an actual strain means (there isn't one, or at least a good one). SARS-cov-2 so far does have only one strain. What they talk about there are some more prevalent mutations that are useful for tracking the dynamics of the pandemic. There is some discussion if the isolates with the 614G mutation in the S protein might qualify as a strain, it appears more infectious and/or transmissible but it's also easier to neutralize.

I'm throwing this positive thought out into the universe and I'm going to say that St.Patricks Day 2021 will run pretty much as normal. Vaccinations of our vulnerable will be complete and the rest will be underway allowing us to go back to normal society.
I have no evidence, no insight and certainly no expertise but that's my feeling if it counts for anything!

By f**k I’d love a party then!! But the lockdown baby boom is on my doorstep around that time!!

I can shoot down your little dream immediately because I won't be getting the rushed, experimental, DNA warping vaccine.

Me neither...those vaccines not tested properly can turn us in to anything..the government's will pump money in to the pharmaceuticals to get a rushed vaccine out to appease the masses...so until its tried and tested well with no side effects or dna altering .im.prepared to take chances....

You may wish to check your facts on Sweden and social distancing.
If your other fact that only a tiny tiny minuscule percentage of the population has been affected is correct, then what was the point of their strategy?
No herd immunity if you are correct, and no economic advantage. Their second quarter GDP contracted by 40% more than Ireland.

You appear to be somewhat confused on Sweden, so glad I could bring a bit of sunshine into your life.

My own feeling is the same. I think that the world is more than half way through the worst of this. (I also worry we're in for a very rough few months before then.) But I do think that things will be relatively normal again by March.

I'm intrigued actually. How will it warp my DNA? Will I become a ninja turtle? I might just be tempted if so.......

Actually a post-Covid ninja turtle parade would be really good.

    .

I want to say I agree but I think in reality it will take years to produce enough vaccines for the entire population

Sweden has 4000 deaths over the age 80, 1500 deaths over 90

Sweden has more people per capita aged over 90 than anywhere in the world

    https://www.statista.com/statistics/1107913/number-of-coronavirus-deaths-in-sweden-by-age-groups/

Do a bit of research before comparing them to us, no wondering

    Not really

You only need to vaccinate over 50s

Younger than that will have more complications with other diseases

Even vaccinating over 70s and underlying conditions would be enough

It's also full of Swedes, very different people to us the Swedes and nearly 40% of them live alone.

When an effective vaccine is found, surely multi billions are going to be thrown at this to produce as many vaccines as required?

If a vaccine is successful you might be surprised how soon you might get access to it.
