    We closed our doors yesterday. A few of us still working behind closed doors for an orderly wind down. I'll probably be home by Thursday.

    Sales is fully closed until further notice. Service is closed but we are doing an on call roster between us all just for breakdowns and just for emergency service and healthcare workers. Selfish, but hopefully I dont get a call.

    Just looking to embrace the few weeks/ months off now and make the best of it. Might never get the opportunity again. Not to be out and about acting the maggot but have plenty to be doing around the house. Catch up on posting on boards etc :pac:.

    Hard to believe really.

    I'm cracking up inside at this stage, I thought doing nothing would be grand but it's getting to the point where I wish I had a nixxer to do or something.
    I haven't even got any tools at home, they're all locked in bloody work. :pac:

    Delighted with the most recent pay situation though, seems instead of 203 a week we should be getting our full wage by virtue of the government paying 70%?
    Hell, even if I got 350 a week that's a hell of a wage for sitting in my room all day.

    My isolation is up next Monday, bet any amount of money the country goes into lockdown by then.

    Our group showrooms closed as of last night, with Service / Parts to stay open. Waiting on further info but there will probably be a skeleton sales staff kept on just in case anyone does want to buy a car via the digital platforms.

    New & Used car sales are non-essential so should be closed. On-line shopping only from now on.

    My quarantine's just over. Got a fit-for-work cert from company doctor and factory wants me back tonight. Something's changed, they wanted to close indefinately, now they're not. I wonder who they're gonna supply as car makers are all shut?

    The manufacture of ventilators?

    Alot of global manufacturing companies of all sorts of parts have been asked by various governments to switch to the manufacturer of ventilators or parts used in their manufacture, which are heavily needed right now. It also keeps people in work too. Similar thing happened during WW2.

    Readuing this thread makes me realise how badly the motor trade is affected by this
    As I work in a large office, we are all working from home for 2 weeks or more at this stage. I had work from home option already as BAU so took the oppportunity to not surround myself with people.

    I'm glad those in the motor trade are finally getting to not be surrounded by potential infection, and getting government support to be off

    Stay safe everyone, those 202 Cashcows and Kumquats wont hand themselves over :P

    How is a manufactuing company specialising in one thing supposed to just "switch" to manufacturing ventilators? That would take months of design and fabrication of the necessary tooling and manufacturing processes, even to start making licenced clones of ventilators.

    I had been toying with the idea of changing my car in the coming weeks too, had been planning on going to the UK for something as there is absolutely nothing here that suits my needs (2.0L or above petrol saloon/estate) however I will now probably wait and if things take a turn for the worse then i'll probably save a ball of money by waiting a few months.

    I know in the last plant I worked at, they had a full metal fab shop there, CNC lathes/mills for repairs/parts if needed. It's not the most efficient way to make specific parts but it's doable. If they can put out parts for 1 ventilator a week, its 1 more to the pile needed.

    I know someone who's bought a span new vehicle in the UK and can't get it for the time being: they've shut over there, AND even if you could collect it, you're into automatic isolation, AND it's non-essential travel AND the ferries are throttling back as well as the transport co involved.

    A single manufacturing company could make thousands of parts for a thousand different products from a multitude of companies from cars to washing machines, etc. Companies don't all have to switch their tooling lines to manufacture ventilators but could easily adopt their lines to make certain parts used in the construction of them.

    So our whole place have been put on leave for the next few weeks. There's optimistic hopes of reopening in May, but I personally think we'll be doing well and can't help but feel that once they have to make a call on it that redundancies will be coming, whenever they do reopen. There just wont be a need for as many staff in all departments.

    It will be interesting to see how and when the brands start to advertise 202 sales for July, how do you even begin to start trying to entice people into buying a brand new car in the current climate.

    I wonder how long mechanics are not going to be allowed work , i can understand car showrooms not open etc , its not essential to buy a new car , people need there car fixed , even when not able to use it as much.
    You cant drive to the shop to get food if your car is broke , cant get it fixed if no mechanic working.

    Indeed,, only essential workers should be going to work.
    No one else needs their car looked at as an emergency/call out.

    How does it work then if the repair cannot be done in the driveway etc? Tow back to the garage I presume. Same for tyre fitters, What if wheel alignment or balancing is required as you cant do that on the roadside

    yes , essential services only

    Its a area that needs looked at , as most mechanics are closed / phones off / garages closed up.

    I have heard of cases where these essential workers cant get anybody to fix there cars as all closed or cant be contacted

    They are quite likely short on time, unexpected car trouble is always a pain in the stones.

    There are options though for essential workers......

    In cases like that I'm sure a garage would respond.
    Garages will invariably reopen in due course.

    Because of the lack of notice given last friday some familys have no car at all.
    Some cars were stripped last friday and awaiting parts , parts not due till monday etc , mechanics were not allowed open monday.

    They should have gave a little notice to prepare
    I know some mechanics went in saturday / monday to finish off jobs , but technically there were not allowed.

    Im not again the lockdown at all , we need to fight this , but i think its a area needs looked at

    I'm nearly 40, what happened last Friday was unprecedented. You can't really give notice for something that was decided that afternoon/evening.
    Some families with no car is unfortunate but in the grand scheme of things it's fairly inconsequential. It's unlikely they are doing without, communities have been pulling together splendidly.
