More people likely to ditch animals as a source of food. The meat and dairy industries are being obliterated with the crisis and the covid19 infection emanating from a market with animals produce doesn't do it any favours. Massive bailouts needed to sustain it but I don't think it is sustainable in any event.

The Guardian lending its voice to the cause of rethinking out relationship with animals as a source of food is great to see https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/may/19/its-time-to-get-used-to-eating-less-meat?CMP=share_btn_fb&fbclid=IwAR3C18HfbjhwA17gUcY-zdakxdfS3apJTtzkq6L9EJxmQlWcft9xkFQISMk

Small vegan food businesses in Dublin have been continuing to open for takeaway the past few weeks and have been very busy, I've also noticed better vegan food ranges in supermarkets.

why would people ditch animals as food ?

if people in this country had animals on their land in the 1840s there would have been no famine . the last thing this country would ever want to do is go back to a failed practice that that would put so many lives at risk if the weather turned bad

Can picture some mighty piss ups in fairness. It's how we do things in Ireland.

    ???
That's a big generalisation to make:)

The finest vegetarian restaurant in the country (by a stretch) is well outside Dublin. Very long and well established and waiting list every night of the week. Paradiso* in Cork. Yes, my opinion, but I know my sh1t;)

There is huge scope for Irish people eating a lot less meat. I don't know the statistics but I would I would say it has already begun. The media like to zone in on the polarising and aggressive vegan versus meat tirade but in the background people are quietly choosing for themselves.
One doesn't need to stop eating meat altogether in order to make a positive change on health/animal welfare/environmental degradation etc.

    * edit. Before Ichigo Ichi opened in Cork, I would say Paradiso was the best restaurant in Ireland, meat eateries included. I miss living in Cork, great food. Now living in Dublin so I've yet to sample all of its delights but I'm (was!) getting there.

ive eaten in paradiso iyers and quay coop in cork all fine restaurants, i live in a touristy area and the veggie/vegan food offerings are pretty poor. dublin is ok (sova vegan butcher anyone ? amazing) but the place i was amazed at for veggie food was gdansk warsaw and krakow in poland, you were tripping up over vegie restaurants, cafes and burger bars .

i still think most places in ireland default to meat and 2 veg.

although my favourite place to eat in ireland is sweetbeats in sligo

but finding good meat free dishes in ireland is still the exception the fact ive eaten in most of them shows how few there are

yes theres huge scope but i just dont see the market at present (and i dont see covid as changing it)

oh ive been veggie for 35 years

    My weather

Is anyone else getting fed up of TV in general? Will there be a resurgence in reading and a rush to the bookstores and libraries when they re-open?

Between the constant overload of negative news on mainstream TV/Radio and the recurrent disappointment with the next over-hyped series on Netflix I'm really looking forward to sourcing a good book.

We are a wealthy country, we can import anything we are short of and not restricted to gobbling spuds. There's no comparison between then and now.

More people will cycle to work. Less cars on the road if people opt to work from home. Hse should employ more nurse, s and pay them a good wage. We need Irish company's making ppe. Supply chain is important. Eg lets
not rely on China to make everything. Less cars equals less pollution. Maybe we might realise people who work in
Shops and warehouse, s are important. Hopefully the government is making plans for the next crisis or pandemic like having a stockpile of ppe
This crisis show trump and putin are almost useless in terms of leadership and the importance of having a well
    funded national health service

    Some positives i noticed
I work for a MNC, did 5 days a week 3 hr round trip with hell traffic for 3 years,

I got told today due to covid, we will be back to site in September and at best 3 days a week, this is a major plus for me, Working from home will certainly be the new norm and companies will have to embrace

My own eating out habits\wasting money has given me food for thought, sickened at how i wasted money before lock down with take out lunchs and dinners,

I think this is hitting home for a lot of people. The amount of money spent on things like take away coffees and snacks going to and from work and during lunch breaks. As well as the lunch meal itself.

The coming winter could be tougher than usual given the restrictions so its important that people make the most of the warmer/brighter months.
Every year I tell people not to wait for the summer to arrive - I see people waiting for 'good weather' and all of a sudden the summer is gone.
For me there are 2 seasons - dark season and light season. The summer starts for me as soon as the clocks change in March. We are now 1 month from the longest day of the year. Make the most of the next 10 weeks of glorious long bright days.
For example, if you haven't had a dip in the sea yet, go for it. I know it's still damn cold in May but it sets you up nicely for loads of swims during June/July/Aug/Sept.

This is so true. I've had my best weekends away on Irish coasts in June. The long evenings are fantastic. Beaches are quiet. (Yes, I know its different this year but...)

Delighted I am no longer sitting in an office listening to other people close to be coughing and sneezing. Disgusting people with no consideration for others around them.

Hopefully working from home is the future and no crowded offices

I am hearing that the numbers of people with colds and other minor viruses is way down because of better hygiene practices.
Hopefully this mean the flu and vomiting bug will be much less prevalent in Autumn/Winter.

That's great. Hopefully those who were working from home will be allowed to continue doing so if it works for the company

I'm sure many won't miss the 1 to 4 hours a day commute

Each Monday to Friday, watching Ireland am, this morning, news at 12:30, news at 1, home and away, neighbors, countdown, a place in the sun, Elaine, judge Judy, news at 5:30, the 6 o’clock slow, all while ‘working from home’.

I reckon a lot of people have lost weight and got fitter over the past few months. Everybody seems to be doing something to improve their physical health which can benefit their mental health.

I think it’s opposite. With working from home being the normal people are drinking way more than usual. When u had to get up at 6am to get ready to commute to office you are more likely to stay off the booze mon-fri, maybe even Sunday. With this new working from home it’s like every night is Friday, especially with the cost and range of booze in the supermarkets.

    Discovering new snacks

Got a pack of dib dab ice lollys in Iceland the other day, average enough but very nostalgic. Same pain in the hole as the lollys were (eating the lolly so fast you have to eat the rest of the sherbet with a spoon ha) . The sherbet comes in little plastic bags and could look a bit dodgy if found by drug detective's lol

I reckon the number of people taking sick leave is down significantly. I have heard very few people taking it from my office. Maybe it's because we are all sanitising and doing less socialising. Absenteeism in the public sector must be way down.
