Covid-19 is more infectious that the regular Flu
6 fold increase in chance of getting infected with the Flu during a outbreak, if you travel on the Bus.
This is 8 fold during a TB outbreak and rises to 10 if the bus passes a hospital.

America is the big question now.

Their testing kits were originally faulty.

They don't have anywhere near enough kits to test.

    They don't think it's serious.

New Jersey has tested just 37 people - 6 were positive

$400+ for a test in many states.

    Trump off playing golf.

So how long of a lockdown can the world handle before we have potential food supply problems?

I'd imagine now is the time most farmers need to be planting crops?

SARS is precisely what it is  Specifically a new strain of the 2003 Sars coronavirus.

That virus had a much higher cfr.
This virus is called SARS2, which I think is a poor choice in name. It's clinical feature is similar but no where near as deadly.

When could the peak be, would that just be guesswork at this stage?

Not guesswork, solid forecasts from many states (via medical advisors) are for approx 12wks of escilation.

Yes, but so too are some causes of the common cold.

Family members can be chalk and cheese.

    Corvid-19 is a SARS virus more specifically SARS-CoV-2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronavirus_disease_2019

It will kill far more people than SARS-CoV because it is less deadly for a lot of people thus spreading easier.

The fact that SARS-CoV was deadlier limited its spread as the symptoms were so severe that people with it were badly affected and were unable to spread it widely

No. It's not. Go and look it up. Wikipedia may help

Official name of the virus is SARS-CoV-2

    Aka SARS Coronavirus 2

    The disease is covid-19

Well if this stays like this and let's say 40% of the population get it then that still means 95% of the population will have little heath issues. Its bad but not end of the world stuff.

That will bring great relief to people on their death bed.

Didn't Canada get SARS as well? What did they do?

Why would they not go ahead and plant them?

It's good to know that we haven't reached the rapid growth phase just yet, but it will come.

Why is there so much certainty in statements throughout this thread, both on scaremongers and other end of scale.

Personally I do think that things are most likely to get worse, but I wouldn't make such statements as I don't know for sure.

Watching the press briefing by the HSE was encouraging and terrifying in equal measure. They have further significant measures they can and have plans to take if spread grows, which they don't want to deploy to early for fear of apathy/noncompliance. But of course they won't say what they are.

I think the HSE needs to open up a little more. Basic statistics (age, general health, county would be enough for us to get a picture).

Not sure why but I'm less panicked about this now that it's inevitable as opposed to that fear around the last week of January when we all realised it was starting to get out of hand in China.

Germany has apprehended 250,000 pieces of protective equipment on their way to Switzerland.

The Swiss government is demanding an explanation. Switzerland manufactures almost no medical equipment.

Germany has banned the export of all protective equipment to deal with the crisis.

Ooh gonna be a few sour international relationships when this blows over

Stopped using Dublin Bus since Monday last week after having heightened awareness of people's habits in the morning.

Them places would be an absolute breeding ground for this virus. Bars and buttons, high throughput of commuters in confined spaces.

Strong sensible leadership from Netanyahu leaving aside his other indiscretions.

The big American cities have lots of parades to celebrate their diversity. The St. Patrick's parade is just one of them.

And no it's not an Irish American thing, it's an Irish thing. It's our national day. Americans hold their parades on the closest Saturday, not even on the 17th.

Depends on where in the U.S.

In Cleaveland its always on the 17th regardless of the day of the week, others may have it on the weekend before. New York usually hold it on the 17th unless it's a Sunday and then hold it on the 16th instead.

Italy are doing a massive lock down but it seems it is heavily focused on leisure and social lives. Work life will continue, which will hopefully not cause a massive disruption to supply chains.

Its still not the 2003 disease. Generally referred to as SARs.

SARs had a much higher mortality rate.

Yes, this is far less deadly but also far more infectious, much more likely to go pandemic, as it has done.

Thankfully we're not looking at a cfr if 20pc or so with this one.

I am just glad one of my siblings and one of my cousins moved back from there last year.

Amazing that London doesn't figure much in the stats.

While many were predicting a massive upsurge in Irish figures, only three new cases in Ireland since Friday (total 24), what do ya think.

Dying out (here) already? Or just a pause?

I was one of those. I figured we'd be around 50-60 today. Based off other countries infection rates trajectories.

Delighted I'm not right. Hopefully cases will stay low. Cancellations of St Patrick's day parades are a good thing. If only we could stop the visitors too.

I am afraid we will see a spike come 21ish (after Italians came over last weekend for the rugby match that was postponed).
