Just because someone points out the EU may be in difficulty doesn't mean they wanted it to be.

But that would be rational thinking..

I am just glad one of my siblings and one of my cousins moved back from there last year.
The annual ever-rising crime stats alone tell you it's gone to shi^e.

The rest of their country isn't too bad, but population density will be a factor, even up in the more friendly Northern regions (Lp-Manc-Leeds-Brad-Sheff), must be about 10m crammed in that smallish area, similar density to N.Italy.

Thankfully, someone is deleting posts. The ones I've noticed that got deleted bordered on aluminum enclosures as opposed to tinfoil hats.

It seems mad that with Italy apparently locking down the whole country Aer Lingus (and I assume other airlines) are still operating flights. I know most people aren't travelling, but it seems irresponsible at best to refuse to offer refunds/change of flights as this will mean some irresponsible people will continue to fly there (and back).

Well in the countryside yeah, and ireland has more rural dwellers thanmost countries, but the urban areas Cork, Dublin etc are reasonably dense, Dublin is one of the denser cities in Europe for example.

No problem, lock down Dublin with immediate effect. No need with Cork, they stay in their own little Republic. Sorted!

While many were predicting a massive upsurge in Irish figures, only three new cases in Ireland since Friday (total 24), what do ya think.

Dying out (here) already? Or just a pause?

Following the same pattern we have see elsewhere, gradual start then grows rapidly.

Tell them to adjust their own plans, it's not my idea of feeding swans and a dander around the Serpentine.

Provision has already been penciled in for HydePark.
Chances may be 50:50, you'll know in about 8wks, before the peak starts.

I think just 3 more cases encouraging for Ireland tbh.

Yes, but so too are some causes of the common cold.

When could the peak be, would that just be guesswork at this stage?

Germany has apprehended 250,000 pieces of protective equipment on their way to Switzerland.

The Swiss government is demanding an explanation. Switzerland manufactures almost no medical equipment.

Germany has banned the export of all protective equipment to deal with the crisis.

    A few gone, yes

This thread moves quickly enough without been clogged up with comments about TV presenter's underwear (or lack thereof)

I appreciate some humour in an otherwise heavy duty thread is not a bad thing, but let's not descend into the gutter

And in case anyone wants to, do not respond to this post in-thread

Hard to know. It seems to be slowing down in Ireland. But how many unknown cases are out there in Ireland that could determine a lot.

It's good to know that we haven't reached the rapid growth phase just yet, but it will come.

I can only imagine the complex task of creating policy right now. I've been critical of our government, but I wouldn't envy their job right now.

Yes, of course. Not guaranteed to always work for everyone though apparently.

Just a bit after Easter in Ireland but that admittedly is complete guesswork on my part

SARS is precisely what it is  Specifically a new strain of the 2003 Sars coronavirus.

Whatever about it being in difficulty, by the Commission's own admission, they're doing sfa. Sort of the international equivalent of handing out leaflets at the airport:

"The Commission has issued guidance to Member States.

the Commission has reminded Member States what options are allowed to reinforce health checks at the external border in conformity with the relevant provisions of European legislation.

    ...established a weekly coordination group...

    ...enhanced their monitoring capacity ...

... on 26 February the Italian authorities requested through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism additional protective material, in particular medical masks, to enhance its capacities. The Commission has relayed the request to all Member States to mobilise offers of assistance.

And so on along those lines.

There are fair points to be made about what competencies are not shared by countries in the EU but it doesn't look great that the EU can do feck all when faced with probably the biggest crisis the EU has ever faced. When there's a bank in danger, they can start coordinating all sorts of things and bringing more areas into their remit (EG elements of fiscal policy), but here it seems like it's every country for themselves.

Neither. Lag between infection and diagnosis.
