Nope, proper lockdown. As of tonight, the vast majority of Northern Italy is officially a red zone - no travelling in or out of it or within it until the beginnig of April at least.
Unless for "family and work reasons". It's discouraging rather than stopping movement.

It is going to spread unfortunately.

What countries are doing now is slowing the spread, to give the hospitals more time to help people with severe disease, and to give more time for scientists to develop treatments.

This will happen in Ireland in the coming weeks or months, and you should be prepared as best you can for this - e.g. helping older relatives who may want to self isolate as much as possible.

It is not going to stop it, people will be selfish and not properly self isolate.

I have it from a very good source that the case confirmed today were in contact with people who they had dealings with and only informed them of their risk status after they had gotten what they wanted from the contact.

IMO there is no chance of this being contained, particularly in a country like ours with poor organisational and enforcement authorities together with the ah-sure attitude and belief that rules only apply to others that a significant proportion of the population show.

OK. And do you also have a plan for what to do with the thousands of tourists who will be flying in here for the weekend, and instead of staying in Dublin and having nothing to do will probably decide to scatter all over Ireland instead?

Yes give them notice now so they can make alternative arrangements. And introduce screening at airports. Temperature checks or the thermal imaging the Chinese use, which is not futile. It might catch say 50% of cases coming through. Should be happening already in my opinion. I’ve seen footage of Chinese returning to work and Chinese authorities wearing thermal imaging devices to screen people, it’s a great idea if we truly want to stop this.
Btw how could you justify putting thousands of people together at parades and pretending all is ok, burdening our a&e’s, nurses, doctors, GP’s and others at this time. It’s unjustifiable. I take my hat off to the HSE staff I’ve dealt with in paediatrics numerous times, they’re amazing and so professional. I hope they all get through this crisis ok.

HSE just confirming one so that they can enjoy their weekend, probably none tomorrow and back to business Monday

    What other 'confirmed' cases?

I suspect you are correct though.

Confirmed as in they have tested positive, but not confirmed as in not included in the HSE figures.

they can't keep it up and they've said just that, might as well keep the few confirmed cases isolated while they can.
    Where did they say that?

The news is at 9.40 tonight and the press conferences tend to coincide with the evening news. Maybe they’re waiting for that?

No press conference until Monday, I believe. Press releases only.

Has anyone thought about the morality of carrying on with the St Patrick’s Festival at this time?

It strikes me as obscene to hold a countrywide party while our friends and neighbours in Italy and elsewhere are mourning hundreds of deaths.

Nonsense....thousands of people die every day of the week in Europe.

Living your life as normal is not 'obscene' or 'immoral'.

I thought we were one European family now. Let's have a party while our neighbors die. It's ridiculous. If things do get bad here remember who was responsible for not taking action. Hold them accountable

Germany banned the export of personal protective equipment... That was pretty much the signal that at European level this would be every country for themselves.

Really should have been done at least a week ago but better late than never I suppose. Ryanair need to do the same immediately.

Don't know about Ireland but I can guarantee a hefty amount of people in England playing up on the authorities just for the sake of it if we saw lockdowns or anything near. You know the types - the "adults" who never seemed to develop beyond the age of 10.

Aye my point was I've heard the term used in the context of lockdowns in the west.

Apologies, I didn't see that as the thread is moving so fast. Strange that Germany hasn't more cases so.

Where did the German catch it.

I don't agree. I think most people in Ireland will take this seriously, almost all of us will have elderly family or know someone who has compromised lungs, and thankfully most of us trust people like doctors and health service professors and will take our advice from them and not Facebook.

There will of course be a few people who don't take this seriously or choose not to, but we won't be looking for 100% compliance. A high percentage will be enough to slow down spread.

Nice rant about Irish people dressed up as a concern about spread of the virus. Feel better now:rolleyes:?

    Yes.

They would want to cop onto themselves and make the call now. Imagine people are probably still booking cheap flights here as its going ahead. Got a text today from a friend in Spain asking was I around for Paddy's day. I said I was but I won't be out.

This is why they have not made the call. If they can get away with it they will wait till a day or two beforehand to make sure the tourists have entered the country. They will have to keep the numbers down until that time though or they will have no choice but to cancel early. Next week will be interesting.

With regards to Italian cases is it possible this was affecting the country much earlier. They had a bad flu season and looking at the figures in the article below the regions now affected by covid19 are the ones reported to have been hit badly with flu. Case fatalities were much lower during reported flu but with 3 million cases is it possible this virus was circulating at this time or the flu made people more susceptible to ill effects. The below article is from 23rd January this year. Sorry for the format.

I've found out people I know and care about have been unnecessarily put at risk so no, I don't feel better at all.
