When this took off in China, a number of countries barred anyone who had been in China in the previous 14 days and mandated their own returning citizens go into isolation for 14 days. This has been expanded now to a number of other countries like Iran.

You mean when we heard about it from China how many people had gone over borders or were on connecting flight. The virus has a 14 day period a lot of people could be gone before you knew. Also I was going by posts who sat just ban Italian flight as if it is that easy. How many other flight/ferries should we ban or stop now

Still only one case here. Might not be anymore. Containment measures around the world will start to work soon. The countries with lots of infections or Italy and South Korea will struggle but numbers elsewhere will fall off.

    I think we're too late.

    Interesting read.

Border screening is ineffective.in these scenarios of asymptomatic carriers.

It clearly reduces the likelihood if you ban travel to and from areas with a lot of cases.

Reduces I agree but stop no

I stand corrected.if someone sneezes and you directly breathe that sneeze in...is another route of transmission.
But I actually meant it doesn't hang around in the air waiting to be breathed in which is what true airborne viruses do.
    Forgive me . Good graphic

Very recently. Italy had 3 cases about a week ago

    3 known cases.

The guardian has an article which infers that the virus has been present in the community from another source for a number of weeks. This was probably from an individual with mild symptoms. That helps explain why they couldn't identify how the 38 yo man had become infected. Iirc the genetic information for the now prevalent strain in Italy differs from those cases which authorities were aware of and had treated and quarantined etc.
It's also important to remember when talking about Italy and Iran, numbers only represent positive tests. Given the numbers of infections emanating from both regions there is good reason for suspecting actual cases community wide are substantially higher.

Oh, and BTW Italy banned flights from China in late January.

The big picture shows a steady decline though. of course there will be regional surges as countries go through the cycle.

Nobody wants that. Pretending we aren't watching Wuhan 2.0 in Northern Italy and probably France, Germany and Spain too isn't going to help the situation. China has the benefit of being an autocratic state with the ability to shutdown and quarantine tens of millions of people at the drop of a hat. Europe hasn't put in any real preventive measures yet. Cases will continue to explode in Europe over the coming days and weeks. Worldwide cases are increasing rapidly when you remove China from the equation.

It will increase again, as not all countries can impose such hard measures.

China has basically shut down for 2 weeks so it was expected.

Lets see what happens once they get back to normal and if that starts things up again.

France, Germany,Spain, Iran, Italy all experienced a 100% increase in the number of cases over the last 48 hours
How could that possibly be a sign of slowing down?

We all want to be boarded into our houses eating cereal in our underpants in the middle of the day while watching sky news updates as the world burns but I can't see it happening. The only people who might get out of going to work will be teachers. But you know yourself. I won't go down that road.
