People have a risk tolerance. You’ll have students over here from South America learning English who will have booked travel to Italy. Minimum wage workers, healthy ferocious travellers who want to see as much of Europe as they can whilst they’re over here.

I’m not sure they’ll take the hit and not travel.
Why are you sure of that?

What I've seen here and in the media is massive down-playing of the issue.

Italy is mostly fine - there are however quite clear hot spots which are no go areas...

Remember "COVID-19 does not transmit as efficiently as influenza" and "only 1% of reported cases do not have symptoms, and most of those cases develop symptoms within 2 days".

What kinds of changes has anyone here made in their regular lives? Are people still doing things like sports training? Sending their kids to their extracurricular activities? Etc. I've made a decision to stop taking my 7 year old to visit my 89 year old grandmother. He goes to a tiny rural school where his chances of infection would be lower than most because of the tiny numbers but he also does dance and gymnastics. Both activities are taking precautions with increased hand washing but realistically kids of that age won't be able to take proper precautions. A dance class I do, has just finished up for a couple of months, not because of the virus but I'm relieved as it involved a lot of close contact and hand holding.

Zero changes. Football training for the kids starts on Saturday.

What’s wrong with ‘ locking’ yourself indoors for a week or two or carrying out some equivalent basic actions/ not doing certain things for a while until the virus has substantially subsided/ when we have got control of it and can manage it

There isn't a lot of point in locking yourself away now while nobody else is. Two weeks from now your 'lockdown' will have finished and the virus could likely have spread and you actually need to stay on lockdown but your supplies are depleted/gone. As soon as you go into lockdown, you have to do so, knowing you could potentially be on lockdown for months.

It’s a virus, spreading fast around the world, countries are isolating parts if their populations, most countries are accepting that slowing it down is imperative to help it’s health system to cope with the pending influx of sick people.

I haven’t got a clue why there us any need to deliberate over St Patrick’s day. If they are saying our country is in a containment phase, how does a massive parade like that help with containment? . I cant imagine many worse ways to spread the disease Faster. I presume they are gonna cancel it but are trying to give people time to acclimatise to the idea or maybe waiting for the first confirmed community spread?!

I would have a concern that we need to be testing more to get a better idea of where the country truly stands. Remember South Korea’s numbers have spiked because they are testing on a huge scale. If you are not testing many people it means you are way behind in managing this and making decisions that could be extremely costly (like having a massive parade).

    How about:
    * Wash hands when your walk in your home door (or office etc.)
    * If you are sick (Flu, Covid-19, Mumps) don't go to work
    * If you believe you were in contact with an infected person, then self isolate for 2/3 days - if no symptoms appear your good to go.

Remember "COVID-19 does not transmit as efficiently as influenza" and "only 1% of reported cases do not have symptoms, and most of those cases develop symptoms within 2 days".

I'd wait a bit longer than 2/3 days

How are people able to use the internet sufficiently to have and use an account on boards, yet are incapable of using any search engine to find publicly available information?

On buses that go through the Mobhi road plague zone and no dip in numbers, I'd imagine mainly because people on northside dont have other transport options :o

Speaking of Mobhi Road, we haven’t heard from d<insert random numbers> since before the parents meeting in Croke Park.

I know he said that his daughter would be tested. We also know that all 3rd years would be tested first. I don’t know if his daughter is a 3rd year. He also took 2 weeks off and said he’d have loads of time to post here.

Has there been much info released in the media about that meeting?

    Newstalk breakfast:

5 minute summary of the coronavirus, mostly centered on the new case, managed to dig out a Professor so lacking in conviction that he buckled when challenged on the impact to the economy of cancelling some flights from the four lock down regions of Italy. Obviously took time to quote the chief medical officer's outrageous statement that there are unlikely to be other cases in the country.

The 8.30 news bulletin had one update on coronavirus, the CMO's statement to be vigilant on coronavirus news on social media.

What was taking up the rest of the space included; a segment in single Sex schools, why teenagers are actually smelly, telling fat people they are fat doesn't help.

No mention of the escalating crisis in Europe or the UK going into war mode.

    Shocking propaganda.

    Couple of things I’m wondering:

What are the re-infection rates of coved 19? This will tell us if there is immunity from the virus for any length of time.

If you get coved 19 and have to be hospitalised, what is the treatment? What medicine are you put on? I know oxygen plays a major part.

From country’s that are further along the timeline in this outbreak, we know frontline health workers are particularly at risk and we know older demographics are particularly at risk. So knowing this, what is the age profile of our doctors and surgeons etc within the hse?
    Thanks.

Anyone wanna take a shot at answering or do we just not know the answers to above?

I heard on some radio programme that one or two airports in Italy are the main hubs for flights to and from China and for onward flights to other airports / countries

No they are not. Heathrow, Schiphol, CDG and Frankfurt are the main hubs for long haul flights to and from Europe including to and from China. Italian airports would be relatively small players

The last info I heard was a couple of weeks ago and I think there had been a few cases then but it wasn’t clarified whether they were reinfected or the virus was still in their body.

I must have a google later and see if there is any update of that study.

These are from memory (but from trusted sources) - so take with a grain of salt:
    * There was 1 reported re-infection case (Japan), but they may have never have been fully cured - so I would say unknown (but looking like there is natural immunity).

    * Mostly assisted breathing - there has also been some success with plasma transfusions.

    * Dunno - but the majority will be < 60 which is in the "safe" zone for survival (assuming no other contributing factors).

How long do HSE recommend for isolation, can't seem to find it.

It would seem unlikely that yesterday's case is a student because we'd have heard by now of the HSE closing the school.
    Wouldn't we?

The National Ambulance Service is further expanding it's response to COVID-19 by providing home testing where necessary as of today. This is in conjunction with their colleagues in Public Health & Community Services.

Seems a good idea don’t even have to leave home to be tested

Until the morning of the 17th of March. On that day the virus has a kit Kat and takes a day off so we can all congregate together for the parade.

https://www.hpsc.ie/a-z/respiratory/coronavirus/novelcoronavirus/guidance/guidanceforhealthcareworkers/ suggests a person will be contagious for a max of 2 weeks.

But it also says "the incubation period for COVID-19 may be 2 to 11 days," while the W.H.O. are saying that 99% of folks who contract will have symptoms within 2 days.

Thats not isolation time, its when some people start to show symptoms.

Yes - its the diff between:
    * Eeek I might have it (after two days symptom free your very very likely to be clear)
    * Bugger I do have it (isolate for 2 weeks)

Remember "COVID-19 does not transmit as efficiently as influenza" and "only 1% of reported cases do not have symptoms, and most of those cases develop symptoms within 2 days".

If up to 85% of the people who get this, have mild symptoms and most countries are only testing very obvious cases, it’s reasonable to assume the majority of people infected will possibly never even be tested. How we get around that is simply test as many people as possible, including people with very minor symptoms. But this most likely Won’t be feasible. I don’t think we will ever truly know how much it’s spread here or anywhere else for that matter. It will Only be when things start ramping up in emergency depts which will be too late unfortunately. That’s why we have to make big decisions now.

We are still being reactive, not proactive. We can see where this is heading from other countries who got it sooner.
