I'll repeat again, people don't understand how quickly the consequences will go from grand to '**** me this is a crisis' in the health system.

I wouldn't mind but it's been all over the news. People think we're reacting to official cases in Ireland. It takes 2 -3 weeks on average from when it the numbers start tumbling upwards to 'we're gonna need a bigger boat'

If the virus was here that early could that "bug" that was doing the rounds in Christmas/New Year have been it, at least in some people? Put it another way I caught it, along with a few friends and family and the symptom list was very similar to what is being advised for Covid 19. IE fever, headache, fatigue, cough - about the biggest symptom I noticed among people with it(and two people I know still have the hint of a cough a month on) - and no upper respiratory involvement, no runny nose, stuffed up sinuses etc. Also, the severity of symptoms varied. In one household I know out of five people, three got it, one quite badly, two didn't(the youngest kids). Even at the time it felt like a different dose to the usual snots and blocked nose "common cold" and nothing like a flu. I know that if I came down with it today I'd be onto the GP and concern would be high enough.

This is both worrying and reassuring. When I saw a post yesterday wondering if the Christmas plague could have been linked I had thought the same myself but brushed it off as a coincidence thinking surely the authorities and WHO would have known this. Based on it showing up somewhere earlier than even identified it now seems actually possible. My house was struck down, kids, me, husband, parents who mind my kids... my husband never takes time off and was in bed for days. Christmas nearly cancelled because my folks got it and didn’t think they’d make it. The only thing I remember thinking about it at the time was how odd everyone is getting fevers- the kids get them all the time, but usually the adults get coughs and colds but not fevers, but my husband and parents were wiped out and all got temperatures which is very unusual. Shall I take myself off to conspiracy theories yet or is this an actually possibility??

You'd swear Ireland was the only country letting in flights from Italy the way some people are reacting.

As soon as it was clear that Italy had a problem, we should have been strongly urging anyone arriving on from there to take 2 weeks out. If that had been done, that school would likely not have needed to close. We’re one step behind in reacting to this, not one step ahead. Tactic here seems to have to wait till a case arose and only then deal with consequences.

    Digging up this from earlier.

I worked on a project with the HSE a few years ago. Never again. Their management layers were outstandingly incompetent and lazy.

    Oh don't get me started.

The general public are now starting to get a slight taste of what dealing with HSE management is like.

Now imagine you work in an acute hospital setting or frontline emergency service. Forget about covid19 for a moment.

Imagine multiple serious issues, lack of resources, clinical incidents and close calls or even just general urgent questions/requests.

Imagine every single time something like this happens you try communicate with the managers like a good employee who cares for their job, the patient and public.

Now imagine every single time managements reply is them dismissing you, or indirect hand waving because they could not be arsed addressing the issue. You'll get nothing but vague information and non answers from HSE managers.

The video from last night where he said "I didn't say it was a boy, I did not say that" after he just literally saying it, is a prime example of the sheer arrogance of HSE management.

Next time you'll try communicate it a bit better.
Now imagine the more concerned you are, the more management start doubling down. Their arrogance increases.

They'll kick the can down the road so far you can't even begin to imagine how bad it gets.

Issues take YEARS to be communicated properly in the HSE.
Most of staffs emails are straight up ignored.

Eventually they'll take to trying to turn the issue on you, or blame you, or wash their hands entirely of the problem. You'll be given a run around unlike any other industry in the country.

The more the public grow concerned and ask for information, the more HSE management will fúck up and make a balls of the situation.

    It's an absolute given.

You want to know why? The HSE is terrified of accountability. No HSE manager will ever be held accountable or take responsibility, PERIOD.
It's what the organization was built upon from day one.

We have a more overcrowded health service than most and need to be extra vigilant.

And it's also a little odd that it's only Italy they want to ban.

France, Germany and Spain are all where Italy was between the 23rd and 24th of February in terms of known cases.

And that's only a part of the story. If shutting down air travel is the way to go, then we have to be honest with our selves. We'd have to shut down basically all commercial air travel.

As worried as I am, I'm not there yet

Any info on the re- infection rates of covid 19?
Might be useful to talk about the facts of this virus as opposed to arguing with each other and slagging off the h.s.e (what’s the point we know what they’re like)

A doctor in Wuhan who worked side by side with late heroic coronavirus whistle-blower Dr Li Wenliang has also died of the disease after contracting it while fighting the outbreak.

Dr Mei Zhongming, 57, was declared dead by Wuhan's Jinyintan Hospital today at noon local time after 'all-out rescue efforts failed', said Wuhan Central Hospital where he worked.

    He died a hero.

Sounds like Flu. Fever is not unusual with Flu - in fact it is usual.

If Corona was around since Christmas you would expect to have seen a large peak in Flu like deaths in vulnerable groups since. This doesn't seeem to be the case. Also, there should be far more Corona positives showing up now.

BBC news at 10 had 20mins reporting on Corona.
RTE news just 6 mins at 9pm bulletin.

    Both 30mins news programmes.

    Interesting...

Another Canadian person has become infected after travelling from Egypt. It is the 5th or 6th tourist to contract the infection there. Obviously a very significant undetected outbreak occurring there.

Without doubt, no further proof is needed, I'm absolutely convinced now.

If there is it would be the first hot weather country that a significant uncontained outbreak has occurred in. Most egyptian cities are experiencing daily highs near 30C
