Working in hazmat type gear is incredibly fatiguing. Military research has shown that it seriously reduced combat effectiveness even in short term use, and that's in soldiers who tend to be fitter than a butcher's dog, and mostly men in their early twenties. Some of these doctors and other medical staff are doing 14 hour shifts in that getup with few breaks, and they have to stay in the suits and masks, because if they take them off the equipment has to be replaced and they can't afford, or have the supplies required to allow that. Then the mental stress of dealing with sick and sometimes dying people and their families. TBH I'm surprised more aren't keeling over from sheer exhaustion.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

It's very strange, young and would have been in hazmat gear, is the strain in wuhan particularly strong ?

Mortality rate is low for younger people, but it is not zero. Plus doctors in Wuhan are constantly exposed* and probably have a weakened immune system due to extreme fatigue as they have been overworked for 2 months. Very sad but it is the most likely explanation (if I remember well, one doctor a few weeks ago just collapsed and died of fatigue without even being infected).

    * in theory with protective gear but realistically the situation is critical and they don’t have enough gear so the safety protocols are no doubt breached regularly.

Surely he'd be immune? Fatigue I'd guess

There are reports of people recovering and getting it again .... so no immunity after having it

I know Wuhan is ground zero and under immense pressure but anyone thinking we'll be grand and being complacent need to remember that despite having better quality of Healthcare, we are without a doubt massively under resourced in the event of a significant outbreak.

Another young doctor dies in China

I read a paper about SARS-cov (which is this virus immediate sibling) where they remind people that both SAR-COV and SARS-MER have been proven to have the capacity to attack the nervous system. The tweet headline below is misleading as they haven't proved anything for this virus SARS-COV-2
But as it's so closely related it's possible.
In the tweet comments is a link to the full paper behind the paywall.

I would just like to point out to people how little we know about this virus we can't even test for it properly.
Does it stay in the nervous system? Can you get reinfected?
What about the lesions it leaves behind? Will it permenantly affect your kidneys? Lung capacity? Ability to have kids?

There is so little known about this virus it's much much better NOT to get it if you can.
    It's not the flu.
    It's not normal.
Have you ever seen a health worker die from the flu?

Haven't seen the world react like this since the last world war.
Social media is NOT the cause of China stopping all Movement and global Economy crashing.

And we just don't know enough about this bug not to do everything in our power not to get it

Ah but sure it’s only a flu..... they said weeks ago that unlike flu coronavirus attacks the organs too. Time for the flu comparisons to end.

We don't have better healthcare and we are less prepared.
Bruce Aylward was very clear about that.
China have been prepping for a Respiratory breakout since SARS in 2003.
We don't even have the same amount of equipment in Europe
    That they mobilised to Wuhan.
CFR will be higher here if we do not control this virus. He was quite clear about that.

And, this is completely based off firsthand accounts of having the virus so not scientific. But I’ve noticed that people who tried to plough on with normal life after developing symptoms reported more severe illness than those who knew what they had from the beginning and immediately rested. While that could be complete coincidence, I think it does actually make sense with this type of illness. And health care workers who get infected are continuing to push on working through workloads far, far beyond normal. It could very simply be the tragic fact that the strain of helping others makes their own illness so much worse.

Not in my opinion. People are just discussing.

    Couple of things:
    1. Because of exposure caring for the sick doctors and nurses will be infected at high rates and have a higher death rate than age and gender matches cohorts. It is what it is. This pattern was seen with SARS and we will definitely see it with Covid19 also. Over time as staff get sick you’ll find nurses and doctors from less essential areas drafted in to replace doctors and nurses in A&E and hospitals who have gone down with Covid19. It is simply what happens with these sorts of illnesses.

    2. Personally I’ve gone to contactless payment for all transactions since the beginning of February. It is a small change but a sensible one.

Looking at Worlometers, there are significantly more recovered cases than active cases worldwide this morning. Hopefully a trend that will continue.

Simon Harris is doing a fantastic job. He is effectively engaging the virus in hand to hand combat.
