How does that work. Your export is greater than your generation? Can I get me one of those? :-)

I dump whatever I have left in my battery each night back to the grid. I guess over the month I didn't use everything that I imported one the course of the day which resulted in a small net gain.

491 kWh on my 6.1kWp system in Cork for March 2024.

Just did a comparison between the last few years and to my surprise up until March, I was ahead of 2022 and 2023, although this early on in the year a few good days makes a big difference. That saying Im above 2023 but behind 2022. But as everyone rememebers March 2022 was exceptional.

what do you think you have saved per year , a rough guess is grand. I will have my first bill this month (2 month per bill) since I am in my house with and without solar. Probably about €400 cheaper for the 2 months feb-april

Instead of cost, as unit prices vary, look at kWh used for the same period before and after, if you have that data

hard to say with the changing rates, introduction of CEG and their varying rates.. I was initially charging the EV with surplus but with decent CEG that's illogical so exporting all surplus now and charging EV on night rate... but the payback time has significantly shortened with CEG and government credits! I've estimated it'll have paid for itself by end 2025, but I'm no accountant! 😆

My installer told me I was going to save money, but it was up to me to maximise it.

Year 1, did nothing but learn. Saving ~€800

Year 2, used the battery and switched to a smart plan. Costs went mad. Saving ~€2000

Year 3, doubled the battery, costs came back a bit. Saving ~€1800

Savings are based on not having solar, and the best plan I could find for that Vs what I actually spent. The government handouts are excluded. They just mean I'm in credit. I've also started heating water using the immersion but do not include the reduction in kero as I have no way to measure that -- only theory.

684kWh produced for the month. Absolutely delighted with the systems performance with just shy of €110 made from FIT. The bill for the month is -€41.

I reckon if I can rack up the credits from FIT I might not have to pay a bill until December or with a fair wind possibly February.

All things considered … a solid April.

Beat last years and PVGIS by a few percent - that's always nothing to complain about :-)

I'm struggling to see April as a good month compared to previous. Maybe my first two years were just super. The last week really helped.

Hopefully not the normal. Overall figures from HA

The summed hourly buy / use mix is as it should be from now to September

And in real money, not as good as those with large arrays, but still positive for me 😁

I decided to set my 5kW battery to discharge 12.30 until 4.30 today (it normally is charged 2-5am, and topped up with PV during the day). Its connected to a Solis 5kW hybrid inverter with 19x ~410w panels, split SE(6)/SW(3)/NE(10).

to my surprise, the PV panels began to produce much more than the normal 5kw I've been accustomed to seeing (snapshot below shows 6.798kW, I have other data of it reaching 7.345kW)

Is the Solis 5kw hybrid inverter OK with dealing with this extra from the PV panels? the image shows the Export + house load of 2.364 + 2.716 = 5.08 kW AC - which is the inverter AC limit, meaning 1.7kw was being diverted to the battery.

Is there an upper limit that the Solis can handle in this setup? eg if it was sunny enough, and all panels were covered in sunlight, could the full PV capacity (~7.7kW) be handled by the inverter for a long period of time?

  • Registered Users Posts: 899 ✭✭✭ColemanY2K

Producing 6kW+ has regularly happened to my 5kW Solis hybrid since install in January. Only difference is I don't have a battery so can only assume it's exporting like it's nobody's business (I must tot up the export hourly values from shelly to see if it exported in excess of 5kWh per hour at any stage).

The size of the PV array has been designed within the tolerances specified by Solis so I can only presume there's little likelihood of the Inverter croaking.

496kwh for the month. With my inverter saying I've exporter 481kwh, but my HDF file has been exporting a lot less, more like 420, but I won't know the exact amount for a few days, but I haven't had such a big difference between HDF and the inverter so far.

Import is approximately 400kwh for the month so still expecting my bill to be -€50 for the month.
