I always enjoy Michael Harding, as a poster just said, the weed must be mighty in Leitrim (!) but he’s fascinating to listen to.

Anyway, his line was bad this morning, which was put down to Skype (or Sh!te, as I call it) so they stopped the conversation, and tried to get a better line. And failed miserably.

Now even allowing for the fact he’s in Leitrim (or maybe Donegal?) surely it’s not beyond the wit of man (or person) to sort out an audible connection that is better than the first one a hundred years and more ago

We’re still hearing from the Voyager probes ffs

I'm not sure what part he's in but there's parts of Leitrim near here where you's be doin well to get an FM radio signal, not to mention a 3/4G mobile broadband..

I think he's northern Leitrim by the Cavan border

Michael lives in the townland of Timpaun, Arigna, Co. Roscommon but in his head, spiritually if you like, he lives a few fields away in Co. Leitrim.

Whether we like it or not there is a little bit of Michael in all of us.

Very strange interview. I think I get the point she was trying to make but by God she made some hash of making it ... and she is a lecturer!

I listened back to this three times, and I find the whole thing a bit bizarre. She is a member of the Policing Authority which was established "as an independent statutory body on 1 January 2016 to oversee the performance of the Garda Síochána in relation to policing services in Ireland." Surely having a podcast criticising the police is a bit inappropriate? I would have thought that there would have been more constructive means of working WITH the police to achieve their stated goals.

The case of Oscar and the migrant seem very tenuous. Oscar's case was years ago and there really wasn't much to it. The migrant was annoyed that she had to give her evidence in a public area. Both could have been put down to lack of resources. And these are two of the flagship cases of supposed systematic issues within the Gardaí?

To be honest, it seemed to me like purpose of the podcast is to build a narrative that the Gardaí treat people from minority groups badly. Surely it would be better for these people to take their cases to GSOC if they feel that they have been so badly slighted.

Colm Toibin can't bring himself to explicitly say that he hopes Trump comes through okay even when pressed by BOC...interesting

Can you imagine how Trump would have reacted if Joe Biden had caught the virus ... he would have gloated, spewed out sarcasm & fattened on it.

Again shows the difference between a gentleman and an ill reared churl

It's not about his views on Trump but about seemingly wishing harm on him...given his whole socially conscious, understanding, thinking artist type persona. I'm sure if he wasn't a former journalistic luvvie of BOCs, he'd be pushed on that a bit more.

So the same as all the presenters on the TV and radio shows in this country at the news that Trump has the virus then.

I don't really get why Colm Toibin, or anyone for that matter, has to be pushed on their personal concern for the president, as some sort of test of their humanity and decency presumably, when that same president has belittled and mocked other people in similar situations.

In a general sense, i usually associate this with the pattern you see whereby people on the right are often at pains to assert how the left is always "just as bad if not worse." Most commonly used as a means of deflection.

Ah well, Biden's good wishes is a load of rubbish as well.

Let's not try to get all (pseudo) intellectual here. You've either intentionally misrepresented my point or misunderstood it. I suggest you listen back to the exchange.

And please don't imply that I'm "on the right" (the "In a general sense" qualification doesn't cut it) because I think someone should hope Trump...or anyone else...recovers from Covid-19. Fair enough to slate the hell out of his views/policies, but people shouldn't take an indifferent or mocking approach to anyone's health...just because Trump would do that.

Brendan making some very carefully worded jibes at Judge Seamus Woulfe at the beginning of the programme.....

Yeah, i listened to the show and i didn't hear Colm Toibin mocking anything tbh. I just don't agree with this notion everybody has to come out and explicitly state their great concern for the president or else it shows....what exactly? I remember this playing out over Johnson too and a lot of it feeding into a clear narrative that all this shows you how bad the left/liberals are. I'm not accusing you of doing that but i think many do and are which is why i was stressing it was a general point. It wasn't aimed at you so sorry you took that personally. It wasn't intended on my part.

Yeah I thought that Colm Toibin was respectful. And he was sort of forced to comment on it at the start, it wasn't his choice to speak about the topic.

Fair enough...no harm done. You're right that he wasn't mocking, but he did come across as if he was very indifferent to Trump's health outcome...and when BOC gave him an opportunity to just clarify or add anything on that, he avoided it. That just seems very petty to me.

Anyway, I do take your point about how each 'side' use all this stuff to have a go at each other. Sometimes common decency should just override all of that stuff...but I realise that's wishful thinking.

No worries and just to clarify, i don't think it's good for anyone to gloat or mock trump or anyone else's condition. And yeah, i think the problem with these things sometimes is they just become overtly political and lose the simple meaning underlying them.

Possibly ... but at least he was restrained & didn't go for the "open goal" with a cheap mobpleasing shot
