BoD but the weakest round so far I'd say

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,387 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Agreed but BOD moves on 7-0

O'Driscoll by default as I've never even heard of the two tennis lads

John Treacy takes silver in his first ever marathon at the '84 Olympics

Treacy for me, I just about remember it, amazing achievement and the commentary from Jimmy Magee is IMO the finest piece of commentary you will ever hear, gives me goosebumps.

    Has to be Bannister.

That was the benchmark for distance running, and still is to some degree.

Heart says Treacy, head says Bannister, head wins!

Bannister for me. Breaking that milestone was massive

Bannister, a huge achievement at the time

I don’t think the Bannister thing was a huge achievement relatively speaking. There were a bundle of people on the verge, once he did it the floodgates opened.
I think if someone could (legitimately) break the 2hr marathon mark it would be a much bigger achievement

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,387 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Just checked, six weeks later John landy ran it in 3:58 flat

I would concede it’s a greater achievement that Treacy though, I just particularly like Treacys medal

Because bannister broke it first. It made it possible and once it was broken, it made the impossible possible for everyone

    Giving Treacy the vote here.

Probably a green tinge on the vote admittedly

Yeah, but you can say that now, because he did it.

(unfortunately, and off topic, I think we are going to have to accept the 2hr marathon time been broken by a someone on 2 pogo sticks.)

Treacy because I remember it and at the time it was unbelieveable

    Ronnie for me

Remember when it happened. Just pure class and it doesnt feel like 5 minutes at all

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,525 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

    This is an interesting one.

The thread title relates to the best sporting moment and, even though Giants stadium was and remains iconic for Irish people, Ronnie's 147 was a prodigious talent at the peak of his powers doing something few had done in a manner no one else has matched.

    Ronnie for me.

    147 for me

    Ronnie O Sullivan.

It's close though but O Sullivan takes it for me

Disappointing that one of these has to go early given some of the 'meh' match-ups we've had.

Again, even though Giants Stadium was unforgettable for everyone who watched it, Ronnie's 147 was just unbelievable. SO Ronnie for me
