I was enjoying it until it got the final act in the house, the effects got very very poor and it got a bit silly, with the countdowns and it was all a bit too poor mans James bond as I said. There will definitely be another one going by the ending....but it looks like it's leaning in to Bond more than gritty grimy Luther which is the essence of his and the shows quality I believe.

I hope it doesn't go the spy route, I'm hoping some special unit tracking down terrorists)Serial Killers which would be more to the Luther we are used to from the series.

The problem with the ending of the film is that the dangling sequel-bait thread sets up a sloppy resolution to the central conflict in Luther's character that drove the series - namely, the high-minded desire to catch criminals vs his ever-accumulating set of debts and obligations which force him to break the law and become a bent copper.

For example there's a bit in the 2nd series where

Luther rescues a teenage girl from being forced into a porn shoot, and cuts a deal with the producers in which IIRC he threatens a witness in an upcoming trial to get him to withdraw his testimony in exchange for the girl's freedom.

That sort of thing works when he's a cop who has to try and hide his dodgy dealings from his boss and colleagues, and contributes to the tension when he's trying to solve whatever case he's working on. But if you change that and have him just as a sort of Crap Batman on the Serial Killer Task Force or whatever, you get a fundamentally less interesting character and dynamic.

Having said that, the film already feels a bit like an attempt at soft-rebooting the character from the above internal conflict to a lazier, more boring version of the "breaks rules but gets results" cop trope, particularly considering the way Season 5 wraps up:

The relationship between Luther and Alice Morgan reaches its inevitable conclusion, they fight (after she murders a couple of Luther's colleagues) and then falls to her apparent death; all of his dodgy dealings and lies collapse and he is arrested for several murders.

On a different note, I finally got around to watching No Nos Gusta Capitan Morcilla! (We Don't Like Captain Sausage!), a Spanish documentary about the 80s home computer game industry in Spain and the development of Capitan Morcilla - later renamed to Capitan Sevilla in Spain and released elsewhere in Europe as Captain S. If you have any memories of growing up playing ZX Spectrum, Amstrad or Commodore games it's a pretty interesting watch.

Delighted to see Naatu Naatu from RRR won best song at the Oscars. What a romp that musical scene was!

Ya, I really enjoyed it. I hadn't known anything about Luther before watching the film. It was really entertaining as a stand-alone movie.

I watched Fall, it was good enough, although the very very end of it was too rushed, it seemed to be missing an important 10mins of the story. It reminded me a lot of Frozen, not the cartoon but the film about the ski chairlift stopped with few kids stuck in it.

Every time I see Sky High the series listed I instantly think they made a series of the Disney movie then am disappointed when I realise it isn't that.

‘Extraordinary’ isn’t a million miles off - a world where everyone has powers but this one girl doesn’t. Irish actress too… think it’s on Disney+ in Ireland.

Watched it and enjoyed it. But I liked Sky High as well. Maybe Disney+ will do a sequel of some sort.

I've never watched the series before either but am going to try out the film and see how it goes... I don't have too much invested in it.

Edit - Ah no I had to turn it off.

Hustle - starring Adam Sandler has been available for a while but I only watched it over the weekend, a decent watch if a little formulaic at times but I always an enjoy a basketball story.

What put you off, out of curiousity? I'm interested to hear what someone who hasn't seen the series made of the film.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,232 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

Haven't seen the series just watched the film, still a good watch just that I didn't know why Luther was in prison in the first place but that didn't put me off the film . It's been said and agree James bond feel about it especially ending.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,516 ✭✭✭flasher0030

I had never heard of the Luther series until a couple of days before watching the movie, but I thought the film was very enjoyable. I'm sure there were plenty of plot holes and exaggerations, but for what it was trying to be, it was very entertaining. Plenty of action, decent story, a credible baddie etc.

I didn't feel like I was missing out on any back-story. There didn't seem like there was meant to be any connection between the Robey story and anything that may have gone before, at least nothing obvious anyway.

I had watched all the Luther series - really enjoyed them.

Luther the film - quite watchable. Not necessary to have seen the series, but it does help somewhat.
