Because it’s like going up to someone at a breast cancer event saying ALL CANCERS MATTER.

Or people at an event for the elderly saying ALL AGES MATTER.

Or telling a paramedic who’s giving someone CPR after a heart attack ALL HEARTS MATTER.

Or a fireman putting out a house that’s in flames ALL HOUSES MATTER.

Like yeah, that’s true. We’re just focused on the one that’s in trouble at the moment. The phrase Black Lives Matter is not intended to mean other lives don’t matter; and it’s pathetic to see white people trying to centre themselves in that narrative.

    Urgh, Identity politics.

    Urgh, Identity politics.

You realise 100 states in the US are protesting and rioting over identity politics right now? Easy to be dismissive.

Pretty much all aspects of politics are identity politics.

Breast cancer victims are hardly victims of systemic prejudice for decades/centuries.

Homesexuals are, I dont seem to recall annual riots on Gay Pride day

If we don't maintain something horrible like direct provision, then there will be more economic migrants attempting to claim aslyum than Ireland can reasonably cope with.

IMO, in comparison to a life in your homeland which is so bad you have to flee, surely direct provision isnt that bad.

Google the StoneWall Riots, which occurred in the 1960s after police kept raiding LGBT bars and clubs. You are very much mistaken.

So not annual, and in a single location. apologies though I had thought someone was condoning the violence, looting and destruction, all of which are diluting the message.

The riots, whether you condone the violence or not, are amplifying the message. This is global news for over a week now because of the riots. The news cycle would have moved on now otherwise.

No the protesting and more so the emotion is amplifying

The violence is turning people off it and diluting the message. How does looting a store who likely employ a range of people amplify a message?

At least you are true to the thread title.

Rioting/civil disobedience is one thing but lads stocking up on Air Max's looks childish.

when the british had their "shoot to kill policy" in the north, the catholics did not riot and attack innocent protestants,

Using Northern Ireland as an example of how to do things peacefully. Incredible.

Because peaceful protests don’t make headlines the way flaming bins and broken windows do.

I saw a post that said this the other day:

Instead of saying “It’s horrible that that man got killed by the police but people need to stop rioting and looting” try saying “It’s horrible that windows are getting broken and people are looting, but the police need to stop killing people.”

Something like 7,000 people were shot dead by the police in the US last year.

I just saw a horrific video of a grown white policeman violently arresting a small, skinny black 14 year old. The level of force he used was way way over the top.

Honestly, I agree. But people getting more upset over that than a six year old growing up without her dad because he was killed in broad daylight by the police is crazy to me.

My opinion: it's great for these black celebs and sports starts to jump on the BLM bandwagon, but there is a reason they live in gated communities as soon as they get rich.

There is a criminal element among swathes of the black community over there. That can't be denied. I know they are unfairly treated, but it's not like there is indiscriminate jailing of innocent people over there either.

And for all the white Irish people joining the "cause", how many of them would feel safe walking in the likes of Harlem by themselves late at night? Or indeed, how many of them would be in favour of a direct provision centre opening up next to them?

No, according to the New York Times it was closer to 1000..More white (around 350) than black (around 280)..(obviously this is still more when adjusted per capita alright though..)

True, however for some reason he got a pass for that.

Most people who support BLM want Direct Provision abolished.

I think it might be a case of poverty rather than colour. However Poor Lives Matter doesn't have the same flair.

Sorry, you’re right - it’s 7,000 shot with 1,000 of those shot dead.

Maybe because violent resistance to the state terror of apartheid was completely justified.

I’m taken aback by the amount of people quoting MLK on peaceful resistance the last few days. It’s as if they actually don’t know how that worked out for him.

There are white people on MLK’s son’s Twitter trying to tell him how his father would have felt today.

Saoirse Ronan is a fairly middle of the road actress with a fake Dublin accent.

Couldn't agree more, her accent changes depending on who she's talking to!

I've only ever heard her speak with one accent, excluding films

Cyclists don't hold up traffic, we ARE traffic.

If we want to cycle in the middle of the lane, we'll do so.

If more people cycled, commuting time would be slashed for all.

No, they just bombed their pubs, or shot them.

I don't know if it is unpopular or not.
But I was listening to a Joe Rogan podcast (generally interesting draws guests out well). He mentioned how he used to be a comedian.
I realised I never saw any of his stand up.

So I looked it up. I was the most unfunny stuff I have ever heard. No clever points or ways of looking at things. No funny punchline. Just shouting and lots of 'ugh' or 'ah' or 'like ugh'.
    It was pure shíte.

tldr: Joe Rogan is not a funny comedian

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Is that not the general consensus?..
