Strange game. I think the backs played well when they got the ball. Some some nice offloading, missed passes, running lines etc. The forwards were the bigger problem as they didn't play well as a unit and out the backs in good positions. Ruddock had a good game and was the pick of the pack.

I think Ringrose had a stellar game and was my motm. Offloaded, beat defenders and run lovely blocking lines. Conway and Carbery were very good too.

JvDF and POM are not on the team

    They are the specialists

What’s that got to do with anything?
Ruddock, TOD and Jordi should all be capable of putting more pressure on the ball at the breakdown, especially against this Italian pack.

Conway is man of the match.

Hard to tell who had a great game but Conway didn’t really pop to mind

I thought Farrell done well....Ringrose etc

I don’t think Beirne got long enough to class as a winner

Did what you would expect from a winger, nothing stand out.

Kleyn was a bit meh. Beirne came in and made a few turnovers (albeit in backrow it still stood out)

Think it gives Beirnes chances a boost IMO.

Does Porter's versatility get him in the squad? There are not many props I've ever seen who can be part of a dominant scrum on both sides at test level.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,641 ✭✭✭Dog Botherer

Might have misheard but did the commentator on RTE say that Carbery was okay and that it was just a precaution? Hope so, he was having a great game.

Otherwise, Farrell, Conway, Ringrose, and Kearney stood out for me. Don’t think either of the McGrath’s, O’Donnell, or Kleyn staked much of a claim, although it’s hard to read much into such a nothing encounter.

Here's a pic of Carbery being stretchered off today. The replays of him on Channel 4's match coverage of his injury looked really awful there.

He didn't deserve that today. He was fantastic out there on the pitch. Let's hope he get's to Japan.

TOD had a solid game imo, and put in a real shift. Kleyn did a lot of the grunt work. Toner for me was a yard off the pace.

I don't think Jack Mc or Jordi played well tbh. They needed big games today. Yes they're still only warm up games. But you only have a few opportunities to impress.

Ruddock did his chances of making the squad a world of good. Probably at the expense of Murphy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,772 ✭✭✭P.Walnuts

Don't really get his some saying Porter didn't do well, dominant scrum and decent around the park

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,767 ✭✭✭✭molloyjh

I really have no idea what to make of that game. Lots of guys weren't either good or bad. In terms if who did themselves favours today, Beirne had a good cameo, Luke McGrath did fairly well, Farrell definitely made a case for himself and Dave Kearney. I don't think Jack McGrath will have been happy with that though. Nor Haley.

Conway and beirne for me were the two ones to really put up their hands. Chris Farrell also making it hard not to take him but do you really need four centers? Henshaw should get another run at 15.

Seriously are we back into another months of Beirne Beirne Beirne....we not get bored during the 6 nations with it

He played in 6 nations and got hammered, as I posted let’s see if he can do it against a top team and then he should travel...a turn over against a second string tired Italy team is hardly anything to shout about

It was a brutally bad performance. And fingers crossed for Carbery. He was the only ray of light.
Ringrose looked sharp and it was good to see him step in and get some passes away.

Honestly it was about what I expected. Maybe closer to 40 points for us but I'm not surprised or disappointed by the performance.

Think he has a chance at making a good 6 internationally, especially with leavy not in the squad. He doesn’t do the basics of a second row. I think he’ll just get past rudduck as a 5/6 in the end squad

It was a fairly indifferent performance and really a test to see who to drop. There were plenty on show here who could pass that test! Not sold on Beirne but he could do a job against "minnows". Ruddock is a solid backup to have and then there is Conway and Farrell. I think Dave Kearney may lose out along with some of the newbies in the pack.

Ruddock a much better player than Beirne, and has a lot more experience to boot. Never seen much in Beirne to warrant the hype; he's far too lacking physically if nothing else.

  • Registered Users Posts: 175 ✭✭mr_cochise

What a totally pointless game. 2nd string team out. Why warm up the reserves. The 1st team needs warming up.
Look at the line ups in all the other games, particularly in the Championship. We have a lot to worry about.

Think he’d be seen as less of a risk at second row though. I genuinely don’t get the hype around beirne either he’s extremely over hyped and just isn’t a good second row in my eyes but I just feel he’ll sneak in ahead of ruddock.

  • Registered Users Posts: 686 ✭✭✭Flincher

Beirne's skill set is no use to Schmidt, especially in possession. Pivac's Scarlets looked to attack space and offload. Beirne shone in that style of play. Schmidt's plan of attack is literally the exact opposite of that. Munster are a wishy washy mix of both. It's no surprise Beirne hasn't been as prominent in possession since he came back to Ireland.

Thornley reporting its just a bit of swelling. And the rest of the squad are relatively injury or knock free. Good news.

Sure he can hire a 7 seater and drive from Konstantinopel to Japan. In proper Irish World Cup style

Beirne won player of the year in the Pro14 before he moved to Munster. I watched a lot of those Scarlets games and he was unbelievably good. Whether he suits Schmits style of play is a debate. but he’s undeniably an extremely talented and hardworking player

It is possible we have the following travel

    Toner Ryan Henderson
    Beirne Ruddock
    POM Stander VDF Conan

Personally think murphy would get in ahead of one of beirne/ruddock as he covers 7. I know you can make cases that Pom and ruddock have played 7 before but I don’t really like that idea.

So none is it? The starting backrow turned over no ball against the Italians? That doesn’t say anything about Beirne, it just speaks volumes about the starting BR

    Limitations of 31 man squad

I definitely think Beirne's best position is six, I don't think he has the power for test lock but he is unbelievably efficient around the breakdown obviously, decent defensive maul and a good secondary option at a lineout.

Yes except POM's special ability is his lineout timing and his unnatural spring.

While beirnes is reading and timing under resourced breakdowns.

I guess pick what is most important for a given game.

In fairness, very few players stand a chance when going backward, like maybe Furlong/Henderson can make a yard with negative momentum.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,958 ✭✭✭✭Shefwedfan

    Imagine

    Healy
    Best
    Furlong
    Kleyn
    Ryan
    Henderson
    Standar/VDF
    Conan

Throw that up against SA and we could match them physically :-)

    Ha, how about

    Healy best furlong
    Henderson ferris
    Sob leamy wallace

    All aged 26.

No lineouts but the opposition would run out of substitutes.

Games like this are always odd, I think in general the pack went okay and the backs did quite well. There’s not a huge amount to learn from the first pre season game and apart from a couple of fringe lads putting a hand up I doubt Joe is going to have his judgements swayed by today.
