The ball didn't look like it was anywhere near the bat to me?

Good score for him for this series!

should be used in conjunction with hotspot. Could be a cracked knuckle at the wrong time leading to the little spike, or any other sound

havent seen it. was it bad?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,998 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

In real time it looked like he'd comfortably missed it, although there was a sound. On replay it looked closer but something seemed off about it, the spike wasn't perfectly in sync with the ball passing the bat.

Something wrong with the process there.
Took ages (90 seconds?) to get Ultra Edge working, and then they only gave it one or two quick glances before deciding.
Visually there looked to be clear daylight between bat and ball.

Yeah the replay looks like the spike occured just before the ball got to the bat, but that could be just down to the picture frames

    Very hard done by there.

According to the live commentary on ESPN Hot Spot being used is up to the broadcasters paying for it.

Smith and Labuschagne in now. It feels like the real battle can now get underway

Harris gone cheaply again. I'd have had Bancroft in ahead of him. If only to break up the lefty pairing for England to bowl at.

aus openers are a joke. SS cant do it again surely!

Another ton plus from Smith, guaranteed, sadly.

Labuschagne was out edging Broad behind but nobody appealed.........

They finally got around to showing the replay on TV after a few overs. At the time I was baffled why neither the players nor the commentators seemed to notice the noise. Thought I was losing it.

Commentators didn't notice until got tweets in from the public who noticed on TV.

The technology has been dubious a couple of times in last week, great when it works but in instances where there's doubt you'd wonder. Wasn't Warner given not out by on field umpire?

Is Curran making Smith look a little bit Human?

judging by the cricinfo commentary he seems to be causing him some problems.

in relation to the Marnus wicket, what was Bairstow doing: They referenced breach of the following:

41.5 Deliberate distraction, deception or obstruction of batsman

41.5.1 In addition to 41.4, it is unfair for any fielder wilfully to attempt, by word or action, to distract, deceive or obstruct either batsman after the striker has received the ball.

41.5.2 It is for either one of the umpires to decide whether any distraction, deception or obstruction is wilful or not.

41.5.3 If either umpire considers that a fielder has caused or attempted to cause such a distraction, deception or obstruction, he/she shall immediately call and signal Dead ball and inform the other umpire of the reason for the call.

41.5.4 Neither batsman shall be dismissed from that delivery.

41.5.5 If an obstruction involves physical contact, the umpires together shall decide whether or not an offence under Law 42 (Players’ conduct) has been committed.

41.5.5.1 If an offence under Law 42 (Players’ conduct) has been committed, they shall apply the relevant procedures in Law 42 and shall also apply each of 41.5.7 to 41.5.9.

41.5.5.2 If they consider that there has been no offence under Law 42 (Players’ conduct), they shall apply each of 41.5.6 to 41.5.10.

41.5.6 The bowler’s end umpire shall

    - award 5 Penalty runs to the batting side.

    - inform the captain of the fielding side of the reason for this action and as soon as practicable inform the captain of the batting side.

41.5.7 The ball shall not count as one of the over.

41.5.8 Any runs completed by the batsmen before the offence shall be scored, together with any runs for penalties awarded to either side. Additionally, the run in progress shall be scored whether or not the batsmen had already crossed at the instant of the offence.

41.5.9 The batsmen at the wicket shall decide which of them is to face the next delivery.

41.5.10 The umpires together shall report the occurrence as soon as possible after the match to the Executive of the offending side and to any Governing Body responsible for the match, who shall take such action as is considered appropriate against the captain, any other individuals concerned and, if appropriate, the team.

I don't know what you are talking about re the Labuschagne wicket. Bairstow had no involvement in it. Was a straightforward lbw.

Don't think that had anything to do with Labuschange being lbw? Getting hit on the arm a few balls before probably didn't help. If that Archer fella stayed in long enough, I'd say they'll be trying to hit him :)

Pressure back on Smith though, he has to perform again and hope the others can hold up their ends.

havent been watching. from the cricinfo commentary:

41.5.1 In addition to 41.4, it is unfair for any fielder wilfully to attempt, by word or action, to distract, deceive or obstruct either batsman after the striker has received the ball. 41.5.2 It is for either one of the umpires to decide whether any distraction, deception or obstruction is wilful or not.Oct 2, 2017 That was definitely against the law!" Should have been five runs under the strict interpretation

John: "Law 41.5. Bairstow breached." John thinks there's no grey area.

Jesse: "Why wasn't Bairstow called for fake fielding then? Umpires forgotten the (still newish) rule? " Gaurav raised it too. Some grey area in the rule on that one. Can't answer that.

my bad, it was in relation to:

Archer to Wade, 3 runs, fuller on off, he drives with a punch, straight of mid on, they push for three, they get it easily but Bairstow faked the ball was being thrown to his end! Smith dives full length for no reason! Everyone is laughing

Here we go again, Smith just needs people to hang in there with him

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

I know this is slightly off topic but just looking at the county championship results. 3 of the 4 games in this round have been won inside of 3 days by 250 runs or more.

If potential batsmen can’t bat out 2-3 sessions at that level then what hope would they have being called up in the near future for England.

I realise that there are players who do perform but not consistently enough for the selectors to warrant taking a complete punt I don’t think

James Vince got a fast 91, 59 balls, bring him back :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,806 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

This series, 84 runs for Warner, 85 fours for Smith, just stole that off cricinfo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭SharpshooterTom

England favourites now with that wicket, just Paine and the tail and they should get a lead.

The plan isn't to get Smith out but the rest of them out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

Cummins and Siddle can stick around. If they can bat until after lunch tomorrow they should have a nice lead.

Having said that if Archer keeps going like he has England could be back in again this evening.

Would be nuts if this series finished in a draw

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭SharpshooterTom

    Oh dear Smith dropped...

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,880 ✭✭✭✭Rock Lesnar

I cant believe some of the shots the australia batsman are playing today, apart from Harris and Labushagne, the wickets could have been avoidable, lucky to only have 5 out
