So kicking the sh1t out of someone is ok once you win a test for your country? Alright then, FFS....

    Wasn't he found not guilty?

So if you split Stokes innings in two-ish sections you get the below:

    10 runs off 82 balls
    &
    121 runs off 137 balls

What a switch up in the middle of his innings.
Early on, it was a case of dropping anchor and hanging around as long as possible. Get to the winning line with singles, if need be (time wasn't an issue). Once the ninth wicket went down, he might as well start throwing the bat as the win was unlikely. I read that we had gone out to 60-odd/1 when Broad was out. It was stunning stuff from Ben in those last overs.

I think it is pathetic for someone to use the winning of a game as a reason to "forgive him for his scummy, drunken assault" (again the other posters words).

The alternative would be to condemn him for the rest of his life for a single incidence of disgraceful, albeit alcohol-influenced actions. But that genuinely would be "pathetic".

Holy Toledo... what a Test match! I wonder will England make changes for the 4th test?

A possible stay of execution for Roy!

But Jimmy Anderson's return is the great imponderable.

Roy has to go as he is out of his depth at this level. Stokes playing an ATG innings is the only reason this terrible batting line up has not cost them the series.

Also on Stokes,,,,we must not forget how crucial his bowling was in the second innings,, got the wickets of Head, Wade and Cummins when it looked flat and the other bowlers were struggling.

Some stuff from Stokes, umpires rubbish as usual, its almost every game now, disgraceful, killing the game

Like it or not, that match and the way it turned out brings massive positives to the game at Test level

They wouldn't dare leave him out at Old Trafford!

Sadly WI and India was played in front of one man and his dog.

Test cricket is in serious trouble.

    .

A shame as that looked a pretty tasty test series on paper with West Indies decent pacers.

What a test match as good as the 2nd test in 2005 for drama. England could have been chasing less than 300 had Root taken a dolly to remove Labuschagne when on 31 I think. But Aus must be kicking themselves when to use a review when it clearly pitched outside leg in the second last over then Lyons not run out leach is crazy pure pressure. Hats off to Stokes thou with an incredible innings. Can't wait for the 4th test at OT.

Wow, that was incredible. So much drama, matches 2005, maybe outdoes it, have to let it settle in before really judging it.

Cannot wait for the 4th Test now. Surely both Smith and Labuschagne will play, should be another cracker.

    The drama today matched 2005.

I don't think either of these sides hold a candle to their 2005 equivalents though, certainly the batsmen don't. Not that it matters. It was still incredible.

Wonderful game of cricket! Looked all over for England with that crazy low first innings. Ben Stokes was brilliant, pulled off the impossible. What a day. Great enjoyment!

Jason Roy cannot play the new red ball early. Should be dropped, hasn't worked. Probably fit in lower down order when sheen is off the ball. Getting him in lower wouldn't be easy though.

    Decent knock by Root.

    Well done Leach.

Looking forward to the next game now.

Unreal how the Aussies let England get the required nearly 80 runs for the last wicket. They'll be absolutely kicking themselves. Fair play to Stokes though.

BTW absolute shocker from Joel Wilson on the LBW call. And Nathan Lyon missing the run-out was a gift.

Watching the highlights, this is incredible from Stokes, a reverse switch hit for 6 then a scoop for the same... sheeet.

Lyon won’t get much sleep tonight and will certainly go some time before opening a paper or sports website...

Delighted. Keeps alive what has been a very enjoyable series. More rollercoaster rides to come.

Last time that I dropped in to check, WI were 27/6 chasing over 400. :(

Blew it in the first innings with all the failed starts.

Bumrah ran riot today. Like Archer the challenge will be to try and how to manage him with the workload both will have in all formats and franchise t20 outings.

Yeah I noticed that alright. Particularly given the amount of recent investment in cricket stadiums in the West Indies it’s a shame nobody thought about how to actually put people in them.

What time tomorrow do we think England will have chased this down by? 4?

    Wasn't far off

The saving grace for Australia is they only need one more win to retain the Ashes still from the next two tests. Far from guaranteed obviously but they're still in a good position.

    Retain/Regain Ashes odds:

    Australia 4/7
    England 11/8

    Surely two draws will suffice?

While Stokes papered over a few cracks there's still a lot of underperformers in that England team. Buttler is having a dreadful series, as is Roy. England only have Stokes and Burns averaging over 30 with the bat in fact (Burns and Stokes).

England need to pick their 12 carefully and you might see 2 or 3 changes to the 12 for the fourth test.

Ollie Pope and Gary Ballance are having good seasons at a domestic level. Wonder could we see them in for Roy and Buttler and move Denly to opener.

Pope is a possibility, however I'm not sure Denly is a any more of a test opener than Roy. Long term I think Roy will drop down the order with maybe Sibley coming in to open, but the middle of an Ashes series in the balance is not the time to make that change. Ballance has already proven himself to be useless at test level irrespective of how many first class runs he scores. England will definitely want to play Anderson if he proves his fitness, but dropping Woakes will leave a long tail in addition to an under performing top 7.

The Australian selection will be interesting too. They also only have 2 performing batsmen and a captain who is now under a lot of pressure - he's not scoring runs and his poor judgement with DRS has become really costly. Starc surely has to play now too.

Starc will defo play the last two games.

Draws aren't easy to attain given neither Australia nor England can bat deep (i.e. 400/500+ scores) and can only come about if severe bad weather intervenes like the 2nd test where 150+ overs are lost.

I can't see Australia getting two draws unless both the final two tests are washouts, so they're going to have to win one of them.
