McHale Park is the only County ground in Connacht with floodlights. The Doome looks a great project, but Prenty seems to be very Mayo focused.
Should the Connacht GAA Facility not be in Roscommon. It borders all the Connacht Counties. more accessible for the likes of Leitrim,

Yeah but if it was in Roscommon it would still somehow end up waterlogged.

Bekan is as central in Connacht as you possibly could be. There are Clubs in Mayo that are further away from Bekan than Clubs in any other county (including Leitrim).

The only recent AI winners in Connacht are the Galway hurlers. Once again completely screwed and ignored by CC

As if yer one to talk. How's those stadium repayments coming along? Still charging donors 100k for oranges?

Galway Hurlers are a nuisance to CC. Go somewhere else and leave us be. Goes as far back as 1989 when Mayo and the other Connacht counties voted against Tony Keady in move that didn't affect them in the slightest, so was nothing more than sheer bitterness and jealousy.

Roscommon county pitch has the best surface in Connaught at the moment. So your little pathetic dig doesn't way up much. McHale is probably the worst surface out of the 5 county grounds

Sure it has to go somewhere, it makes perfect sense to me to put it in the Connacht centre of excellence. Just because the Galway hurlers won an All Ireland (fair play to them!!) doesn't mean that the Connacht Centre of Excellence should be moved to Galway all of a sudden.

Do the Galway hurlers still have the land they bought for their own centre of excellence?

Its hard to see the basis for an argument that its not centred in Connacht based on the above. I don't know where the Aran Islands pitch is but they would be the only club above 2 hours from Bekan. So maybe it should have been built on the Aran islands?

No that's fair and Bekan is somewhat central but the original posters point stands about Castlebar having the only existing floodlights and then the vanity project from the <snip> also going up in Mayo. If you had to go ahead with it I'd have picked somewhere Roscommon side of Athlone, even Kiltoom for decent road access for most. The more prudent option though would've been to spend the grant in a different way, possibly with a north Connacht and south base. Sligo, the town in particular, is the second big population base in the county and has been completely ignored in Prentys 25 years. Hard seeing them use this facility.

With regards to the hurlers, it's more of a wider point about the game not being wanted by CC. The seniors are not the worst now because they at least get a degree of gate receipts from Leinster. It's the likes of the minor Hurlers (incidentally the top performing team in the province by a mile) that get screwed as nobody wants them, least of all their own provincial council which has long wanted hurling dead. Camogie would be similar. The facility won't be used (nor will they even be welcomed) by any Galway hurling team who'll use local. Portumna (Connacht's most successful club) and surrounding region of strong player numbers is way too far to be a realistic resource. For a Connacht facility, a lot of Connacht wont avail of it.

This year is a little different but i know alot of co workers( i work in galway) would be up and down to bekan for underage hurling regularly throughout the year and they never complain bar the usual Mayo Galway banter. I'm sure they'll like the dome even more.

If the centre of excellence or dome was in Kiltoom it would be used even less. To me putting it on the very eastern edge of the province would be useless. Its less than two hours from every club in the province except the Aran Islands where it is now. If it was in Kiltoom its now nealry 3 hours away from some clubs, where is the logic there apart from it being less than an hour from Portumna?

Out of interest what is your local club or vacinity if youd rather not say?

Great facility. I can see the point of why Bekan but its central to a lot of the main towns in each of the counties.
Be interesting to see its use.

Fair play to CC for getting it in though, can see plenty outside boiling with rage about it. Hope its utilised now by all counties.

It would not be useless based around Kiltoom. Do you realise the amount of clubs from Mayo,Sligo,Leitrim and Galway that rent pitch's to train from St.Brigids,Clann Na nGeal and Padraig Pearses in south Roscommon during the summer months. On a given night during the summer you could have 4 Connacht clubs using the facilities with it been central for clubs with players based in Dublin Galway Limerick and at home. How many clubs use Bekan? its a very under used facility because it does not suit anyone really apart from Mayo.
Its a fine set up but some waste of money

But Galway rebuilt salthill and didn't include floodlights. How is that the CC fault?

Cathal Cregg said in the news that over 50,000 players went through the gates in 2019. If society gets back close to normal next year I'm sure demand will be even higher with an indoor facility.

Bekan is central in the province and only 5 minutes off the n17 so has decent road access.

Look at Bekan on the map, its as close to the centre of the province as you could get.

Leitrim and Sligo have Centre of excellences developed in the past few years. Roscommon are developing a Dermot Early Centre of excellence. How much use would these Counties need from the Connacht GAA Centre.? The Air dome will be of use in bad weather, but the Centre looks to be primarily for Mayo

Who would want to play in a dome in good weather?

I said it would be of use in bad weather. The FBD games, probaly competitions at end of year if pitches are in ****e but would likely be idle a fair bit
