Who knows but maybe Hennelly has been injured/late back to training/overdid the Christmas, maybe Horan wants to assess his leadership qualities behind an inexperienced defence/ wants said defence to link up with him in terms of kickout strategy or whatever/ maybe he wants to get the most out of Parsons on kickouts - all in all who knows.

There are just so many variables with FBD team selections. All I know is Horan is seeing a lot more of the panel than anyone on here is, and knows exactly what shape they're in

Ah the auld kickout argument again
You would sweat Hennelly is the only keeper in Mayo who can kick the ball out
I suppose it is hard to tell when the manager will not look at any others !!!!
We all seen the dublin game
    The meltdown
    Again

Why can’t we try another young keeper in what effect is a meaningless pre season game ?????
Either way both keepers are coming to the end of their mayo careers and we need to cast the net

KM - there’s not that many young keepers at the big clubs these days. I’d struggle to name one under 25 that would be fit for a senior panel.

I’d agree Byrne should be given game time, what’s the point of him being there but the counter is in other positions you wouldn’t have someone one the panel for a couple of weeks and then start them

If anyone was thinking of attending today's U20 match, it's been moved from Ballina to Bekan

    Heartbreak for Kilmaine.

They had their chances at the death.

Great effort by Kilmaine . Lost by 1 point after extra time .

Ah well there's always next year! Not many other teams get that chance :pac:

Now they need to dust themselves off and go out and get out of junior in Mayo for once and for all

They've a nice team, it's a real pity they're not going up actually challenging for an intermediate title but should be no excuses this year

The keeper debate needs to be parked. As long as Clarke and Hennelly are playing they will be the front two.

Horan is a conservative manager. He is going to stick with players that are experienced and tested in big games. Clarke and Hennelly whatever their weaknesses are tried and tested with faults that Horan will try to minimise with creative games plans and plays.

This is reflected by the fact that Schlingermann and O'Malley have departed the scene. They know that as long as Clarke and Hennelly are around there chances are limited.

More disconcerting is that when Clarke retires, Hennelly will be number 1 regardless. This is based on the premise that he has the experience built up over a long number of years and that big game day exposure is what Horan wants.

For me, keepers can build up a consistent faultless record over 5 or 10 games and then lose it with one mistake. Whether that is a lack of concentration or opponents forward prowess doesn't matter. Partly explains why Cluxton is so good, he is consistently good and strives for excellence.

Appreciate that some on here may disagree, but think that Horan is not for turning on this. He's conservative and is going to stick with what he knows and a adapt his game plan around his keepers ability to minimise any weaknesses.

Plus O'Malley and Schlingermann had to have met with Horan before they made their decisions.

Schlingermann didn't depart because of Hennelly and Clarke. Horan let him go for Rory Byrne after the underdogs game. Also, Schlingermann was rarely starting for his club last year as the Mayo U20 keeper is from Kiltimagh as well. As for O'Malley, Horan would know him better than any of us from his time with Westport. Neither of them are as good as Clarke/Hennelly.

Rory Byrne probably should start tomorrow in what is a pretty meaningless game. However from what I've seen at club games the last few years, he's not as good as the other 2 and won't be starting come championship anyway.

I don't see why Horan would be labelled conservative either. Look at last year when James Carr was given his debut in the league final. Boyle was dropped for the first couple of championship games while towards the end, Keith Higgins, McLoughlin and Andy Moran were on the bench in favour of younger players.

If there was a young Stephen Cluxton out there, he would get an opportunity. While Clarke and Hennelly aren't perfect, they're the 2 best we have.

I think I should clarify same.

We are a team in transition,James Horan's is likely to rightly appease the natives wishes for real experimentation in terms of trying out new players, our league schedule is arduous with only three home fixtures.

We can't be certain that a newly promoted Meath will go straight down as they are I believe a team on the up.

Without stating the obvious and then stating it: It's vital we make a fast start in those first 3 games.

Yet the Meath away game is a must win game,it is laughable that we aim to target a perhaps speculated vulnerable Dessie Farrell managed Dublin team,I just don't buy it.But what better and more necessary time to end our wretched run against them.

Best to ease their way into the new season by taking it handy in the first game and not worrying about the result.:o

    Mayo 0-9

    Galway 0-8

    Playing with a strong wind.

Massive score by Tom Parsons who looks like he was never marked absent.

Padraig O Hora performing admirably.Brian Walsh has chipped in with two nice scores off either foot.

Strong wind? I hate to think what you think this storm coming tomorrow is. Wind wouldn't even dry me jocks on the line.

Yeah seems should be further ahead, could be well up against it now. But a few nice scores taken it seems.

Donoghue and Ruane in action for NUIG today by the way

Only a 6 point lead Mayo have blown this time!

Galway were dead and buried... new year, some things never change!

    Penalties it is...

Unfortunately so was his last game
    He can’t handle pressure
Not a good trait for a keeper
Hate seeing him coming up taking 45s as well

If Hennelly is there for kickouts then shouldn’t we sub clarke on for saving penalties :D

Mayo got 1-5 without reply to go 6 up... no score then for the last 12!!

You simply have to laugh at this stage.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭jr86

    And the inevitable happens tbh...

One lad missed 2 penalties for good measure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,463 ✭✭✭✭km79

    Again I’ll say

What could possibly have been wrong with trying another keeper in FBD ?
    Rory byrne ?

We have seen all this before from Robbie
We know his strengths and faults .
    Well I say we
I am not sure Horan sees anything bar perceived strengths

    How bad was he?

So kickout's are the reason we couldn't tag on a score in injury-time? Hennelly to blame because Boland shot instead of taking the mark or Irwin turned over the ball when all we had to do was hold on to it. Amazing the goalie always the scapegoat
