    Another planet perhaps.

Hands up who has any idea what's in their pension. I encourage everyone foolish enough to have one to go and examine it closely. What 99% of people will find is

    a) you're being screwed on fees by the provider
    b) there might be a company appointed "financial advisor" taking a bit of your pie for absolutely nothing
    c) that your investments are in companies making weapons of war, energy companies destroying the planet, big tobacco and big pharma etc etc

Congrats! Your helping to destroy the planet! And not only that, you're being ripped off along the way :D

This madness has got to stop. How can someone contribute to this is amazing to me. We all need to make a stand and stop greasing the wheels of this destruction.

So no pension is your suggestion?

My first suggestion is that destroying the planet isn't a good thing. If you're on board with that, cool then we can talk alternatives.

The alternative would be to not contribute and just stick what you can save in the bank. Banks would never do anything wrong.

You’re one of those woke gobsheites who expect to be provided with more than a mere pittance by the state in your old age, aren’t you?

I'm sure there's a few quid going from Paddy's payslip into SpaceX and the other ****-athon efforts of billionaires to escape this planet and live in peace a million miles from poor people.

    Whats the alternative?

Well you haven't bothered in your first effort at soapboxing so let's hear some.

That's one alternative. Not one I'd put forward mind you, but your framing of this as the only option shows how brainwashed the populace is.

1 - Let's not have a system where everyone funds the destruction of the planet, the raping of the third world and the proliferation of war.

2 - Now we're at a good stage. Let's get together and discuss. I propose a radical overhaul of the global economy to one for people rather than for the current madness. No reason the government in this system couldn't be the one that provides for people from cradle to grave.

Unless you’re good craic like Srameen, you should have to work until you keel over. Pensions should be exclusively for people who aren’t moany old windbags waiting to fill a box.

    Government based solution?

A return to the family being the main source of support for the eldery, in conjunction with the gov? Like Asian countries continue to do.

It's a very big assumption that people are destroying the planet. Humans are having an impact but the Earth will still be here long after any trace of humans ever existing has disappeared.

The madness is overpopulation but no one is willing to pay the price to solve it.

I broadly agree and my phrasing might be off. We're funding the killing of people and cultures and ultimately all humanity.

I agree. I believe the correct sentence is "people are harming the planet to an extent that will make our life here impossible. After that Earth will recover".

Depends. Do you think for instance that Ryanair, Aer Lingus, BA etc are ethical? By karting yobbos on two week pisups at dirt cheap prices they're contributing massively to climate change.

    Very true.

The planet was here long before us and has survived and will continue to survive long after. We're a little insignificant blip in it's 5bn year history, all we're doing is destroying ourselves, not Earth.

Good thing I don't have one then, am going to have to keep working (self employed) till I die. Never have made enough money to start one and it's too late now. Ahh well. Doesn't bother me, I will get by on state pension. Which before anyone tells me is bleeding ye dry, feck off, I pay taxes and it's all just digital zeros anyway. Made up money.

Ok so rule out airlines. Gotcha.

How about pharmaceutical companies helping us to live better and longer?

Good point, I honestly haven’t looked into it.

You’d think there could be money made investing in green energy or electric transport.

The problem is over population. So to protect humans still being able to survive on Earth the obvious ethical opinion is to invest in companies which reduce the population not increase it. So big tobacco, oil and military are good and life saving companies are bad.

Average male life expectancy is 78. My gen may retire at 68 (rising).

So you give up a pile of money now from the years where you are functioning reasonably well to some glorified bookie's runner who wears a suit while pointing at barcharts he put in a Powerpoint pres - in order that you may get it back to 'enjoy' in a ten-year period way down the line in which you may be wearing nappies and ringing a bell for a nurse, have dementia, or have a ****ed back. Some deal.

I've worked out my own personal alternative - work as far as I can and enjoy every penny while I can. And when I can't, plenty of tall cliffs about.

Neeed to look at the root not the branch. Get rid of humans or at least reduce the human population through reduction to approx half it's current level.

    Problem solved.

over population isn't a problem. Waste of resources is, it takes thousands of litres of water to raise 1 cow or beef... and all the emissions that come with it.
then there's all the tat from China for adults and Kids to play with and throw away after a year or so.

Plenty nuff resources for the planet, just people doing the dog on it.

Population will settle at 11bn eventually

Oh yes it is. 11 billion humans even accessing just basic needs is completely out of sync with earths ecosystems and likelihood of other species survival.

No 1 issue in relation to the environment after the pure mass of teeming humanity is the use of fossil fuels and transport.

We're not even at 11 billion and we've already seriously messed up the environment. China with a population of over 1.386 billion is one of the biggest polluters on the planet and the aim is to increase their standard of living.

At present China and India are some of the worlds most populous countries and amongst the largest carbon dioxide emitters.

    We're fooked....

I can't understand why the OP is singling-out pension investments. What do you think your money is doing in the bank, sitting in a vault with your name on it, waiting for you to withdraw it?

Part of any banks income stream is from the bank investing in stocks and bonds as an institutional investor in its own right (as distinct from mutual funds investments).

I can't think of any ethical way of investing which won't, ultimately, support causes and organisations which you would consider harmful.

Countless generations of humans managed to live their lives without destorying the planet for their children. We're the abnormality, the wrong ones.

Destory capitalism, not the planet. Get rid of your pensions and "invest" in local ground level political action aimed at overthrowing the current order.
