Where exactly are ye exploring the aspects of being a "better driver's car" - on the run to Lidl? 🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 615 ✭✭✭Foreign Sports

Hahaha exactly, back roads, traffic light grand Prix etc.

It all depends what you want from a car. The Y is compromised from ride and handling point of view compared to the 3.

When I had the Y, it didn't encourage faster driving around roundabouts etc so was less involving.

The 3 corners flatter and is more enjoyable to drive spiritedly.

Of course, neither are sports cars but it all depends on what you prioritise really

My work commute consists of motorway, dual carriage way and good rural roads. The 3 being a smaller saloon compared to the taller Y SUV will of course handle much better. I've never ragged my 3 around the place, but normal driving it was just better than the Y. Twisty roads and round abouts you'd notice the difference.

Loud bang came from the back of the car last week while driving, thought WTF was that but didn't think much else about it (I've had a LOT on lately). Anyway I wash the car earlier and notice something on the back of the panoramic roof panel, a couple of sizable impact marks right at the edge of the panel and a big crack leading further in. No idea what hit us or if it was thrown or not, but something hit us.

€1800+ repair estimate from Tesla (I presume this is just a straight swap for a new panel). I mean it looks kind of cool when you're sitting in the back but it that was just a metal roof I'd have a small ding and wouldn't care less. If the impact was an inch or two lower it would have been the rear windscreen and this would have been covered on the windscreen cover and cost me nothing.

    🤦🏻

Have you tried claiming insurance? There's been a lot of chatter about pano roofs being covered and not being covered under windscreen cover. I once had to argue to get side glass replaced under windscreen cover.

Not covered by my insurer on windscreen cover. Looking at going down the accidental damage cover route, I have full NCB protection but a bit worried they'll just load my premium at renewal and I'll get a 60% discount off some astronomical number with the NCB still intact.

I managed to get a reasonable quote out of axa earlier for the car and then added a claim to the quote and the premium didn't increase so they're always an option, but most online insurers just give you a straight decline when you've any kind of claim in your history so it might cause issues down the line.

I must check with aviva if the windscreen cover is for all glass.

It isn’t. At least not on the M3. Just switched from AXA and specifically asked for the glass roof and the girl had to go to her supervisor to check only to say it isn’t as they would class it as a panoramic roof.

Pretty much no insurer will cover the roof on windscreen cover from what I can tell.

I’ve really been impressed with the videos coming out of China on the Model YYY - as someone with kids and a Mrs that likes to sit in the back with them - it’s a dream car at this stage.

Order will be going in ASAP and once available.

How crazy have things become when €1800 + repairs is not worth making a claim over.

IInsurance Is nothing more than a tax these days. Its either not worth claiming, or a write off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,389 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

I'm going to claim, pay the €300 excess and then see what happens at renewal. Hopefully axa won't have changed their rating by then if I need to move.

Been driving 20 years and have never made a single claim up until now. Bit of a joke you even have to consider whether making a €1500 claim is worth your while or not. It most definitely wouldn't be if I hadn't paid for full NCB protection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,898 ✭✭✭...Ghost...

Your No Claims Protection only works with your existing insurer. If they choose to double your premium, you'll get the discount, but off a higher base price and you'll have to suck that up. It shouldn't be too bad though for the type of claim you're making.

But my no claims bonus remains intact right? Meaning I'll be issued with a 9+ year NCB cert at renewal should I decide to move to another insurer?

Still ask if you have had any claims and claims are recorded

You'll have to check that with your insurer. A friends sister worked in Axa about 10 years ago as one of the team supervisors. Got talking about insurance and she told me not to bother with NCB protection if you shop around every year, because the protection is only good with the insurer it was purchased from. If you move insurer, you move as if you hadn't taken out protection. I still take out protection, but never forgot that conversation.

anyone an idea why the awd delivery date is stretched out until November, are they getting a new battery or something? Friend looking at one, can have a rwd next week and even the performance is showing October/November window.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,389 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Yes but I've verified with axa that they won't load the premium because of the claim, as long as that doesn't change before November I can move there (assuming my NCB can still move with me).

The bigger issue may be that of the companies I tried axa were the only one who'd still quote me at all with an accidental damage claim on my record. Everyone else was just a straight decline, which would really hurt my ability to shop around for the next 5 years. I've worked on several quotation systems (including axa's albeit not the rating) and a lot of places will use a separate rating engine for their renewals than they will for new business which could throw up issues with my axa premium in a year if I moved there.

Best case scenario though my current insurer does nothing at renewal time and none of this matters. Either way I'm thinking I'm gonna be better off making the claim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,204 ✭✭✭September1

It is really hard to predict, I had experience where having a claim caused premiums to drop due to NCB still accumulating but extra premium for NCB protection being no longer relevant.

My guess is that the RWD and LR RWD are still in stock, so are available this month. The LR AWD may all be sold out. There would have been less of them available, so they will be here in late October, ready for delivery in November. The Performance model will be prioritised ahead of LR AWD, so buyers will see them in late October.

I'm thinking I'm gonna be better off making the claim.

For sure. That's too much to be paying out of pocket for accidental damage. It's just a ball ache having to even consider these things!

Until you put numbers around it its impossible to form a view. All that can be determined is the cost of repairs and the no of years No Claims bonus, the impact on Insurance renewals because there is a claim (not just next year) is far from clear

This time 5 years ago, I had an incident with a cyclist who caused €2300 worth of damage to my 5 day old VW ID3. The cyclist tried unsuccessfully to make a personal injury claim, and the insurance company, Aviva, paid for the repairs to the car. Every year since there has been a note about it on the renewal, but as I had NCB protection which allows 2 unlimited claims in a 3 year period, there has been no other consequence of making the claim. In fact the premium has come down, if anything, and is now at the minimum possible amount of €310. You should definitely make the claim and get the car fixed asap.
