I'm on it a while now no issues with a Ryzen CPU. Had the cache issue but that has since been fixed.

I'm upgrading my ITX rig at the weekend , swapping the Ryzen 5 3600 out for my 3700x. I'll probably upgrade windows on that. Is it possible to do a clean install Upgrade ?

GamersNexus Core i9-12900K review is out

Just looked at what it would cost to swao from my 5800x on b550 to a 12600k on z690 with DDR5 and we're looking at the guts of €1250+, and that's with me keeping my 6900xt.

    Large sized ooofff.

I could "offset" the price by selling my current system minus the GPU and throwing in a 1060 6gb I have for another project, but It definitely doesn't seem worth it right now.

It would be cheaper to wait and buy one of the 3D stacked cache chips from AMD in the new year.

Just finished watching that Gamer Nexus review from a few posts above and I'm not that impressed with the new CPU it wins yes but only by a small margin compared to 5950X. The new 3D stacked CPU's from AMD should claw some of that back. Also it looks like GN ran the tests with 3200MHz RAM when they really should have ran it at 3600MHz and 1800IF for 1:1:1 to get better scores for AMD.

But surely the point was to try and directly compare by standarising to give a clearer picture of where Intel are now at. By that logic he could have used 4800mhz for the Intel and it would've been a good bit faster again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Did he not use DDR5 for Intel I skipped through some of the video.

  • Registered Users Posts: 597 ✭✭✭Aodhan5000

They used DDR5 alright ya but he also used windows 10 which you could argue gimped the 12900k so it goes both ways. I prefer hardware unboxed anyway. It's just great to see competition again. Was expecting AMD to take the mick altogether with pricing of the new stacked cache chips but I'd say they'll be less inclined now.

Well thankfully the Z690 motherboard launch debacle gave me time to read and watch reviews before my 12900K/Asus Maximus Hero shipped, though not before my Corsair Dom Plat RGB 5200CL36 DDR5.

    Cancelled my order from Overclockers.

New plan is that my brother still gets my 5900X but instead I get him a Micro-ATX B550 motherboard and some cheaper Non RGB 4x8GB 3600C18 DDR4 that better suits his use-cases and HTPC form-Factor case. I keep my Strix X570-F Mobo and 4x8GB Vengeance RGB Pro 3600C18 DDR4 and buy myself a V-Cache version of the 5900x when the launch in the next month or two.

I bought into the Alderlake Hype but its really just Catch-Up for Intel and AMD will re-take the performance crown when V-Cache chips launch soon.

Anyone here want to buy 2x16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB First Edition (0287&0288) 5200mhzCL36 before I return it to Corsair?? Apparently you can't get DDR5 of any speed for love nor money at the moment. Cash and Collection only from Bray. €400 for a fellow boardsie, I could probably get a lot more for it elsewhere. LOL

Looks very interesting. Very tempted to build a rig around it after watching Wendell's video on it. Also tempted to see can I find someone trying to get this and selling a 5900x or 5950x in a hurry in Germany as might get a good deal when they want to pick one up since I have my replacement X570 board being posted out.

Sorry, you're right I don't know what I was thinking....a moment of madness.

Overall I'm not hugely impressed given the mad expense of the platform and DDR5, but at least it should hopefully lead to some more competitive pricing.

At this stage, with all the crap going on with shortages, for the first time in a long time I'm perfectly content to just stick with my PC as it is and haven't really gotten any upgrade itch like I normally would.

Earlier this year I actually bought a cool 120hz screen laptop with an RTX3060 and 5800H for playing games at a friends house instead of buying a new card as I usually would. Money well spent!

If you're playing above 1440p there's literally no point in changing CPU unless you need it for work.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,415 ✭✭✭.G.

Hardware unboxed review title "Ryzen Dethroned" was a tad misleading IMO, for gaming anyway. Depends on your work loads I suppose but for gaming a 2-3% performance gain over a 5950x or 5900x isn't anything to write home about. With increased power consumption to boot.

    Haven't watched the others yet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,740 ✭✭✭kingtiger

great to see some competition again, but that power draw on the 12900k 😨

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Power efficient if you browsing the internet but Intel won't tell you that they say they are very efficient chips. Hoping people buy them without realising.

I can't wait for the 3D chips just to see how they stack up. But that much cache isn't cheap to produce so who knows what way AMD will go regarding price.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,702 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

Just depends on how much profit they want to make.

AMD/Intel could probably slash their prices by 50% if they ever got desperate to move inventory.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

Intel: "Alder Lake's new cores are rated "E" for Efficient!"

Also Intel: "Our new flagship CPU has 105% of the performance of our leading competitor, but it only draws 103% more power! So efficient!"

    Just shy of 250W for a stock desktop CPU... b r u h 😂

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,325 ✭✭✭iLikeWaffles

    $800.... reasonably priced 🤣

There is more 32" 4k reasonably priced monitors available no?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Gamers Nexus review of new Intel chips Windows 10 vs Windows 11 and it seems they perform better on W10 than W11. Makes me wonder was I right to upgrade my own Ryzen system to W11.

Yeah so guess who wiped their backups after moving his Windows install to a bigger SSD, only to have the install bork on the second boot?

Lessons: don't wipe your backups until a week after.

The lesson is don't wipe your backups until you create newer backups!

Convinced I’m after somehow frying my Ryzen 3600, it’s driving me insane.

Was playing a game, froze up, tried to reboot but nothing, so powered off at the wall.

Reboot, all fans spinning, no display output. Red CPU error light on the Mai mortar max.

Swapped GPU, no dice. Swapped motherboards to an older b450 I have, no dice. Did a bios flash on the existing board, nada. Reset CMOS, ripped everything out of the case, tried to boot with single stick of ram, just the cpu and GPU, swapping ram around slots etc etc, nothing.

PSU is a Focus GX850 that’s less than a year old too so doubt it’s that and everything’s lighting up.

Starting to think a 5600x is my only option now, unless anyone else has any ideas?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,656 ✭✭✭Mr Crispy

    Edit: Sorry, misread.

CMOS battery can cause the CPU to not be recognised on some boards.

Were your temps okay before the thing went haywire?

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,605 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

Would be surprised if it was the CMOS since I tried 2 mobos.

Was the one time I wasn’t monitoring temps, but I can’t imagine it was being pushed overly hard.

Luckily Amazon are refunding me, so have a 5600X ordered so will keep my fingers crossed that it works, otherwise it’s PSU and RAM, or else I’ll truly be out of ideas

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,605 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

5600X arrived today, did a quick test boot and we have display output.

Still genuinely amazed that I managed to kill a CPU without running it under mental conditions, but I suppose the silicon lottery is a bit different these days?

Hi guys any general consensus on where to buy parts these days? My mate wants to upgrade (finally) from his i5 4460 Rx480 rig and has asked me to look into it.

Thinking something on the lines of a Ryzen 3600, 16 GB 3200 MHz RAM and an RTX 3060...

Maybe something along the lines of the following, if prebuilt is a decent option? https://www.littlewoodsireland.ie/pc-specialist-fusion-grs-gaming-pc--nbspgeforce-rtx-3060nbspamd-ryzen-5nbsp16gb-ramnbsp512gb-ssd-amp-1tb-hdd-with-3-monthnbspxbox-game-pass-for-pc/1600608585.prd?crossSellType=item_page.recs_1

Otherwise, where should I be ordering parts from?

    TIA

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,702 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

Pre-built is your only option for new GPUs unless you know how to get an Nvidia Founders Edition.

Is there any legitimate way of getting an FE here in Ireland (apart from having relatives/friends in the UK)?
