I have rarely ever found it viable to just upgrade a CPU and not upgrade a CPU/Mobo together.

The next round of hardware will be DDR5, pci-express gen 4/5 and while AMD mobos might have some staying power, Intel will change practically every year arbitrarily.

As another poster said, AMD mid end boards like the B550 are comparable to Intels high end in terms of features and compatible, so I'd buy whatever combo makes the most sense financially. If it's just gaming, 6/12 is probably going to be around for a good while. Games don't scale well with cores by their nature and I suspect that current limit isn't artificially generated.

I know a few people who will be very excited by that!

Thinking of doing a full build next year, but looks like building is still going to be a nightmare, are there any good custom pc builders in Ireland? I know of pcspecialist.ie but not many more.

Has anyone ordered off Overclockers recently.

I'm looking to get a monitor from there but noticed this

"Brexit & Republic of Ireland: Due to restrictions imposed by import processes, we are no longer able to charge Irish VAT on orders. Customers will be contacted by the carrier to arrange payment of the relevant import taxes prior to delivery."

When your spending nearly 900 euro, id want to know what the import taxes are, can anyone advice?

You are better ordering from Germany.

You will be caught for import tax and VAT if ordering from UK.

    I think your right.

Looking at case king, they have what I'm looking for but I never used them. Are they reliable?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

I have no experience of them myself as I haven't bought anything since Brexit. But they are a well known company so I guess they would be fine to order from.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,648 ✭✭✭Mr Crispy

Case King own Overclockers, so either way you're dealing with the same crowd! But yeah, I've used them a few times without a hitch.

Overclockers let Irish Customers pay EX VAT. So for example in mid April I paid GBP£645 excluding VAT for some stuff which was €742 (ExR 16/4/21=GBP£1-€1.15) I got a bill from DHL for €188. Thats about 25% of €742. Irish VAT is 23%. The other 2% was DHLs' €14 Collection Fee. ie. No Customs on Computer goods.

You only get double VATed if the UK company won't sell you at an Ex VAT price and you only pay Customs if the class of goods you are buying is actually subject to customs duty.

That said, like others suggested, Caseking.de is Overclockers Parent Company so you could order from them and often they have stuff that OCUK don't have and visa Versa. I also ordered some stuff from Caseking around the same time as my OCUK order for that very reason.

Anyone else on Windows 11 with a Ryzen system?

The L3 Cache issues are annoying and supposedly the new update released for preview people doesn't fix it. It fixes the latency but the read/write/copy isn't fixed.

Below is my Windows 10 score from just before I updated to Windows 11:

And here is my Windows 11 score before the fix update:

You can see the L3 Cache figures are well down. Hopefully MS release another update that really does fix it next time since the first update didn't seem to fix the issues.

Got a g604 there a couple of months ago and absolutely love it. Hyper scroll is so satisfying to use. Great battery life too, 2 months 10+ hours daily still hasn't died but on last bar now.

I have a Gigabyte Aorus M32U on the way to me, cannot wait

Would be very interested in your feedback, man. Have been looking at 32", 4K, 120Hz+ monitors for a few months now.

So I'll be getting my hands on a Ryzen 9 5900x soon enough. I'm going to be upgrading one of my PC with it. Both are B450 motherboards but have bios updates available to support the 5900x. My current main rig in running an matx Asus Prime B450m-a II Ryzen 7 3700x and my current secondary rig has an ITX GIGABYTE B450 I AORUS PRO Wi-Fi and a Ryzen 5 3600.  I don't really overclock other than benchmarking.

In term of the current Mobo's I'm looking for any input on which would be the better setup for the 5900x ? I was thinking the Aorus myself, but maybe I should byte the bullet and change one of the mobo's to a b550 variant with good vrm's.

    Any input would be appreciated

Neither is recommended for a 5900X, going by the tier list: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1137619-motherboard-vrm-tier-list-v2-currently-amd-only/

They're both Tier E (75A) while you want Tier C (125A) or above.

Nice list I see my board is Tier A.

Tier S- with X570 Tomahawk :D Absolute overkill for 5600X of course.

I actually have a Trier A Mobo ordered a few weeks now but amazon are playing silly beggers. I got a MSI MAG B550M MORTAR WIFI ordered for £112 from "Amazon" it was out of stock at the time but is since back in stock with "Amazon EU" for £135 .... They won't ship it untill it's in stock with "Amazon"

Ah well I might just bite the bullet and get the £135 one. I was also thinking of getting a Corsair CP-9020130-UK TXM 850watt PSU for £89 while I'm at it , unless there are better options out there ?

Will be running with a RX 6800 XT , my current PSU while a good one is only 600watt and it's pushing the limits as is 😂

Ordered the Corsair RM850 , MSI MAG B550M MORTAR WIFI and an ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 240A-RGB (my first AIO) from amazon DE. Even with the delivery of €15.40 it was significantly cheaper than buying from Amazon UK with a total cost of €365 . My Ryzen 9 5900X arrived today too.

I'll be busy Early next week when everything arrives. I'll be reusing my current Ryzen 7 3700x in my ITX build. My Ryzen 5 3600 will go to my brother to replace his Ryzen 7 2700x, this will unlock AMD SAM on his setup. The Asus Mobo and my bequiet 600watt PSU will be added to my mountain of IT stuff I'll get around to reusing one day 😂

Thanks for you help and the links to the Tier lists, it was interesting stuff.

I have a similar PSU a RM850x. Not sure the difference between non x and x are though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 691 ✭✭✭Confused11811

It gets better there are 2 RM850 models. The 2018 and the 2021 models along with the RMX850.

All different manufacturer and components but all of good quality. The old RM series (pre2018) was replaced by the newer higher quality RMX which you have.

Corsair revisited the RM series and released a new line (2018) which is greatly improved over the older RM series. Both the 2018 RM series and RMX are excellent preformers and both Tier A psu's. At times prices can be similar but the RMX was 25 euro more expensive today.

They both use different caps and fans , the RMX is a Corsair designed fan and the RMX has slightly better ripple control. Probably not much between them other than price.

The RM 2021 series is another refresh and probably as good if not better in some aspects. But all would be good, all tier A psu's.

Google taught me this today, at the start of the day I'd no idea in the difference between the RM, RMX or TMX models .... thank you K.O.Kiki for opening up that rabbit hole for me 😂

Maybe this is a dumb question but is there any sure fire way to tell if a mobo will require a bios update for a ryzen 5600x or not before you buy?

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,697 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

    Needs this sticker:

But easier still is to buy A520/B550/X570 with USB BIOS Flashback. That way, you can update BIOS with an unrecognised CPU.

Search sucks and I didn't want to start a new thread for this one, looking for new led back lighting for a 27" monitor. Was using plain white with an inline switch for the last 4 years and it was rock solid but gave up the ghost on me. Whats there on amazon at the minute seems to be cheap hue knockoffs that come in rolls you cut your self and have either a very cheap looking remote I assume needs line of sight to the controller lol behind the monitor or an app and from the pictures are put together with varying degrees off skill.

Reviews also mention quality of adhesive strips on them being hit or miss. Any recommendations?
