given this is the UK , they're probably arranging for a parliamentary debate on how to sort out the drone in some kind of PC way.

Perhaps they've sent in the Brexit negotiation team to come up with a plan to take down the drone, so they have decided to simply close down Gatwick Airport permanently as a solution.

If this was JFK airport , the president would already have declared a 'war on drones '... at primetime of course .

Planes were attempting to take off this morning and airport wasn't evacuated so i doubt there is any general threat to lives other than to passengers onboard an aircraft.

Drone operator should be shot on sight once found.

Well they should be arrested at the very least. Let's not be shooting them.

No let’s just murder them, blocking people from getting home for Christmas is all a lol until you get caught. **** them.

Wouldn’t you disable the lights with tape if you were up to no good.

    Or like..... turn them off??

    It's a bit mad altogether

There's also a video purporting to be the drone but i can't see any lights on like the one in the pic , maybe they only put them on at night

Can you turn them off? I don’t have one.

On DJI there is an option to turn them off. They are used (and different colours) so the operator has a visual of which way the drone is facing.

Their aim is to keep the airport closed not try to take down a plane.
And as said I'm sure they can turn the lights on and off.

Yes, you can turn off the red ones at the front but can disable the rear green ones.

If the goal is to shutdown the airport then doing that wouldn’t be any good.

I’m starting to think this is a teenager who tried to be funny and it’s gone very wrong. It seems like the police say it’s an industrial drone yet the vids and pics I’ve seen in the last hour look like cheaper Mavics.

I’m sure they know lots we don’t.

Well my understanding is whenever they have tried to reopen the airport these drones reappear.

Yes, I stand corrected. They tried to open at 4pm and the drone(s) returned.

If I was the person responsible I'd cut my losses and run at this point, given the publicity around this, they are being hunted by everything the UK can throw at them, which is not inconsiderable, and the chances of getting caught have now grown exponentially.

Hate to admit this but various malicious ppl are taking excellent note of this

Have seen drone like that before. couple of hundred quid. Easily up-gradable props. Antenna and radio. Can have 2 batteries(4000mAh) on body for extra flight time. Tough and fast drone. can also be flown POV

No, otherwise they won't be seen and you may not keep the airport shout down.

Who ever it is most likely has big footprint on YouTube and an account that is up on knowledge of drones.

Whatever the motive or back story to this is, it's a huge eye opener for what can be achieved with realitively low tech and cheap equipment.

Hopefully this is a prank or attention seeking gone too far but the capability to bring a major airport to it's knees so easily will surely be being watched by those with more sinister motives.

I would fear this is only the beginning of both this incident and copy cat's and can't help feeling this is a distraction for something else.

The level or vulnerability is quite unnerving really

This has all the hallmarks of a rasta wearing crustie leftwing climate change fools, who probably come from a rich English upper class family and think they can pontificate to everyone, their Atheist ethos means that Christmas is a capitalist Christian holiday to be destroyed.

If I was a betting man I'd put good money on these sychophants to ultimately be responsible.

That was my thinking too....climate change protest.

Obviously listening in to airport communications too, in relation to flying the drone(s).

It’s been 4 hours since they last saw one or report one. I’d wonder if the person doesn’t want to be caught have them not ledded it yet!

    I still think its aliens..

I for one welcome our new airport closing overlords

The whole thing could be automated, land recharge, fly again, the suspect could be sipping cocktails on a beach somewhere whilst laughing at everyones misery but feeling so holier than thou for all the Co2 saved. I'd say it ain't your normal off the shelf Drone that little jack will open Christmas morning and crash on Stephens day in the house next door.

Apart from my aliens theory which shouldnt be dismissed just yet could some more knowledgabe people confirm could the signal being used to control the drone not be jammed causing it to crash??

You need to remove batteries to recharge them. Unless they modded them into wireless charging batteries then the police have bigger problems!

Yes and that is likely the “secret” tech the army are going to use. It will either land or return to its home point then and they can follow it.

There is also tech that can remote take control of it but that depends on if it’s a certain set of off the shelves models.

If it’s custom built thing it’s a little harder depending on the part config.

    To my knowledge no.
Not if they are on a preprogrammed root.

    I think.

Maybe I'm talking out my ass here, but when a drone is flying, it heats up. Surely one of those heaty-catchy-cameras they have on police helicopters would follow it handy enough to it's point of recharge?
