Perhaps they've sent in the Brexit negotiation team to come up with a plan to take down the drone, so they have decided to simply close down Gatwick Airport permanently as a solution.

Planes were attempting to take off this morning and airport wasn't evacuated so i doubt there is any general threat to lives other than to passengers onboard an aircraft.

On DJI there is an option to turn them off. They are used (and different colours) so the operator has a visual of which way the drone is facing.

Yes, you can turn off the red ones at the front but can disable the rear green ones.

If the goal is to shutdown the airport then doing that wouldn’t be any good.

I’m starting to think this is a teenager who tried to be funny and it’s gone very wrong. It seems like the police say it’s an industrial drone yet the vids and pics I’ve seen in the last hour look like cheaper Mavics.

I’m sure they know lots we don’t.

If I was the person responsible I'd cut my losses and run at this point, given the publicity around this, they are being hunted by everything the UK can throw at them, which is not inconsiderable, and the chances of getting caught have now grown exponentially.

Who ever it is most likely has big footprint on YouTube and an account that is up on knowledge of drones.

Whatever the motive or back story to this is, it's a huge eye opener for what can be achieved with realitively low tech and cheap equipment.

Hopefully this is a prank or attention seeking gone too far but the capability to bring a major airport to it's knees so easily will surely be being watched by those with more sinister motives.

I would fear this is only the beginning of both this incident and copy cat's and can't help feeling this is a distraction for something else.

The level or vulnerability is quite unnerving really

The whole thing could be automated, land recharge, fly again, the suspect could be sipping cocktails on a beach somewhere whilst laughing at everyones misery but feeling so holier than thou for all the Co2 saved. You need to remove batteries to recharge them. Unless they modded them into wireless charging batteries then the police have bigger problems!

Yes and that is likely the “secret” tech the army are going to use. It will either land or return to its home point then and they can follow it.

There is also tech that can remote take control of it but that depends on if it’s a certain set of off the shelves models.

If it’s custom built thing it’s a little harder depending on the part config.

Maybe I'm talking out my ass here, but when a drone is flying, it heats up. Surely one of those heaty-catchy-cameras they have on police helicopters would follow it handy enough to it's point of recharge?
