To be honest lads some of the pro MDH people on this thread are really showing themselves up. For people who want to be seen as ultra tolerant you are not very tolerant of people with differing views are you? All kinds of insults and sly digs being thrown at people who voted for Casey - it's fcuking disgusting really you should be ashamed of yourselves.

They can only do that if they have multiple usernames.

People with multiple usernames voting on an online poll in an attempt to subvert the election? I...am...shocked.

Next you'll tell us the poll is open to any person in the world from any nationality.

Good thing I bet €60 @ 16/1 for Casey to come second. A good start to the bank holiday weekend. :D

Nice one, last Monday I put €12 on Casey to get over 18% at 4/1, a nice little few bob coming this way as well :D

tolerance is a very limited concept. it certainly does not include tolerance of diversity of opinion. there is a very set and rigid orthodoxy you must confine yourself to if you are to be considered tolerant.

does not compute? you bet your sweet ass it dosnt.

i think that in any thread on AH the interactions on the thread should probably be viewed as reactions to the other posters and not the wider public

ie, i dont believe that 21% of people who voted for casey are all "anyone but michael d/the establishment/make ireland great again/travellers are ruining the country" shills or vested interests

but a pretty fair number of the non-winner (michael d, fyi, just reminding everyone) posters in this thread and in after hours are exactly this type of vested interest participant, and the rhetoric is pretty ridiculous on most sides.

so thats worth bearing in mind, this is a low-rent arena that doesn't really reflect broader society and im sure we're all actually pretty nice to the people we have to meet every day etc etc

Really, you need to have a look at the banned list, I used to have the url but someone will have it. AH zaps several day.
    The banned ones can't vote.

I'd love to see the percentages of what Peter Casey will get in rural areas compared to the cities
I very much expect that the Rural Areas will have used this opportunity to show clearly that they have had enough of intimidation thievery and burglary and its about time the political classes listened to them .

you'll find the left are very rarely tolerant or indeed the right...before the lefties get their loafers in a twist.

I voted for the little fella who is designed for the Presidency Arts / Culture / Sport / Gaeilge

But I nearly did not vote. (Nearly forgot about it as well)
It was the most pointless election in years.

Michael D. runs rings around the rest of them.
To be honest the impression I got from the rest of them is that they are just using the election to increase thier profile - good career / business move.

The standard of the debates was laughable, beyond amateurish.

I think they should have another referendum in seven years time to do away with the office of President it serves no real purpose, other then being a very expensive nursing home for former politicians.
Or others who try to use it to increase thier profile.

I'd agree with a referendum to do away with the presidency - an impotent role that is just a drain on public resources.

Don't agree about MDH though. The only thing hes designed for is spewing various meaningless quotes. A career politician who at this stage is just like the rest - good for hoovering up expenses and pensions and not much else. A waster basically.

Leo did say send a clear message. So somebody going from 2% to 20% kind of does.
FFG will be making big promises for dealing with Rural Crime from now until the Next Election .

Ah listen I know the Internet is the Internet but I kind of treat it as an extension of everyday life. It's not that hard to be respectful even if you disagree with someone elses viewpoint.

At the end of the day it won't really matter who comes out on top in this election and it seems to me most people are just worried how the result will make us look to the rest of the world which is bollocks really.

Everybody knew there was a surge to Casey yet no radio or tv stations had any new polls or covered the story. It's as if they didn't want to give momentum, granted MD was always going to win but they still should covered it.

trying to spin 21% of the vote as a win in some tragic stuff lads.

higgins with a huge majority is the result, if you have any other take on it you are spinning hard
He wasn't expected or "Supposed" to get this much. He had no backing of any parties. He mightn't get elected but the amount of votes he'll get will send a message and that's what this was about, sending a message, It's okay to talk about what others don't want to or simply ignore. A seed takes time to grow and this will resonate with others.

If they didn't before, at least travellers now know what a high percentage of the country think of their carry on

I certainly hope it does. I'm sure the media and politicians will try to bury it again and put it down to knuckle-dragging boggers who know no better.

They can only do that if they have multiple usernames.

Or just shared it in a facebook group.

Remember when Roy Keane(I think it was him) was nearly voted as time magazine person of the century because half of Ireland decided to vote for him? He ended with more votes than Gandhi. All that happened was that Irish people shared the URL of the vote with each other. It's even easier to do with social media. Not to mention certain sites will always skew towards certain political persuasions.

Internet polls/surveys are inherently untrustworthy. Someone in this thread has already said that the poll here reflects reality. It doesn't.

This isn't about Peter Casey. It's not even about the travellers. It's about someone actually representing what a lot of working people if this country feel. It's about someone telling us how they really feel on sensitive topics and not giving us pc nonsense. This vote shows where we stand There are votes out there for you if you actually grow a pair of balls and say it how it actually is, what you actually believe in personally but are too afraid to say as it's not pc.

Hopefully this is just the start.

It was Ronnie O'Brien not Roy Keane.

You can better your last dollar that that is exactly what will happen.

Irish "urbanites" are much more insular than they like to think...Irish media typify this mentality, they all ignored the surge in support for Casey for the last vital week of the campaign...a classic insular/rural type reaction, brush it under the carpet! Irish media have a long standing knack for brushing a lot of s##t under the carpet...f##kin insular troglodytes!

There are parts of Rural Ireland that are way more progressive than some our urban elites!

I love the way people are claiming some sort of moral victory for Casey when:

    1. If the numbers are accurate, MDH will have the biggest vote in Presidential election history.

    2. 80% voted against Casey.
