Autumn Internationals Team Announcement/Talk

Ireland play Italy on Nov 3rd, Argentina Nov 10th, New Zealand Nov 17th and USA Nov 24th.
Team announcement expected on Tuesday or Wednesday.

With just under a year until the World Cup this is realistically the last chance for any bolters (bar a Kleyn-esque deadline residency qualification!) and with two of the games likely to be without a number of our first liners (USA and Italy as Italy will be without their French and English based players) there will certainly be opportunities.

Last year Ireland selected 38 players for a 3 game autumn series but Joe sent out an entire B team against Fiji so we can probably expect something similar. Are there any bolters? What do we do about the likely absence of Murray?

In terms of Murray's injury, Marmion is due back this week, so it'll likely be him, McGrath and Cooney named, with 2nd choice starting vs Italy and 3rd starting vs USA.

What do you mean since capped?
Do you mean has played since that announcement?

I think he means players who didn't play in November but have played since.

I initially read that as these are the players whose first caps have come since, although the list is obviously wrong.

McFadden has loads of caps and Ross Byrne has never been capped.

Sorry for not being clearer. I will edit the post. “Since capped” should read “Have since been selected in squads”.

Not his call to make. How close is Murray to a return?

He didn't say it was his call, he says he doesn't expect it. If it was his call he'd know.

Might not be the worst thing in the world to blood a few of the backups at the highest level.

Our biggest concern at the moment is the vast drop off in quality from Murray. I would rather have Marmion play the All Blacks now for the first time and learn from the experience than in 12 months.

If we lose to the All Blacks but come out with a proper, battle hardened test 21 that inspires confidence I'd be very happy.

Doing their usual bang up job of updating the schedule.

Gerry T reckons Haley and Addison will be called up.

Not sure Haley deserves it tbh.

Also seems we'll send a weaker team to Chicago. What a pointless money-grabbing exercise.

Money grabbing isn't pointless in a sport which has a revenue issue.

Addison is a no brainer. Haley is obviously someone that has been looked at in a bigger picture and was in consideration for a call up before he arrived. I haven't been overly taken with his performances to date although he did look more comfortable and threatening in the second half against Gloucester than he has done previously. He looks a little bit average generally though and I'd far rather guys like Addison, Conway and Kearney at full back.

Billy Burns will possibly be a little disappointed with no call up but, whilst he has looked decent at times, there's only so much game time available in a specialist position and his starting point is well behind the other options in terms of the Irish set up.

Haley feels like a cap for the sake of being capped at this moment.

Joe is very happy to dole out caps to dually eligible players to tie them to Ireland. Reidy and Treadwell, for example.

Think it's a case of having a few spare guys tuned into the set up. No bad thing.

We know from previous years Joe likes to have guys who can rock up and train with minimal investment in getting them up to speed

He does, though i think we already have enough guys who can slot in at full back who know the set-up. Even TOH (who's been a bit off the boil so far this year) deserves a place over Haley.

Addison is winning me over though. He's more of a quick and agile type centre rather than the battering ram. More Ringrose than Henshaw. I don't see him overtaking any of those two, Farrell or Aki but if there was an injury he'd be a nice one to drop in.

How is it pointless? I think this is a great chance to get a good look at some fringe players.

Probably a bit more convenient if it was at home but playing away does no harm to squad morale. Especially for fringe players who may not have gotten a look in on tours in the past

Get a look at our fringe players doing what though?

If we send our seconds, and Italy do likewise, no one is going to learn anything. The Italy seconds are going to be sub-Pro 14 level, we already know that our seconds can perform against players of that calibre. We need to see them tested by a good side.

I hope both Ireland and Italy go full strength. Looking at the abysmal ticket sales, I'll bet the organisers are hoping the same...

Putting three games in one day is a bit dumb.
2016 was perfect: One game on Friday and one on Saturday.

The ticket sales are awful alright: https://www1.ticketmaster.com/event/0400548D9D6542BF

It goes to show what a massive draw the All Blacks are.

Must say I'm looking forward to the clash between two of the world's most closely matched sides. A highly anticipated match, with bragging rights on the line, and the chance to land a psychological blow before Japan 2019.

Fancy Italy to just nick it, but Georgia should give it a good whirl.

I've convinced myself that Fiji will be the team of 2019 and the games they have in November will show if they can become serious contenders, they have some serious talent coming through, the No.10 for the Fiji Drua team was a revelation in the 2018 NRC competition, sublime with ball in hand.

Might end up catching the last few minutes of Japan v NZ. Not that fussed about Wales v Scotland, just don't see the point of the fixture, will watch the highlights.

England v SA should be a rough auld tumble. England have gone for as big a pack as they can get on the pitch and the hits should be massive. It's the only real proper international of the weekend so will try and get time to watch the full game.

8:00 kick off for the Ireland game and the lack of importance of the fixture should make the match thread quite interesting. Might line up a couple of brews, think a drinking game is in order?

If the commentator references:
Carbery's move to Munster - drink
Tadgh Beirne changing one shade of red for another - drink
Any of the following words: Depth, Experimentation, System, Physicality - Drink
Bundee becoming Ireland eligible - finish your drink
Joe Schmidt arriving to Chicago later in the week - drink
Larmour electric footwork - drink
Less than a year to the world cup - drink
Any reference to 2015 - finish your drink
Yellow card - drink
Red card - finish your drink
GAA skills - finish your drink
Stockdale 6 nations try record - drink
Van derFlier return from injury - drink

Feel free to add more!
