Surely the bonus should be scrapped for anyone on the dole for over a year and not punish people in receipt of other social welfare payments such as pensioners and people on illness benefit.

Only in this country can you decide you aren't arsed to work and then get a bonus for it .

Just think about it for a second . It's hilarious in a way.

    What bonus?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,501 ✭✭✭BrokenArrows

Ive always worked and ive never received a christmas bonus or any bonus for that matter.

Getting a bonus on the dole is a joke.

Christmas bonus needs scrapping, and the dole money needs reducing. Shower of lazy c**ts get everything handed to them.

I know plenty of people on the dole who do sweet FA and the social still continues to pay out, this country is a joke...you'll hear the outcry now from people on the dole who've already spent it as they were expecting it, 100% agree with original poster

2 hours ago the papers were reporting that the government have denied it's being scrapped. Thought the Internet was supposed to be the death of the papers by being more up to date?

I also disagree for scrapping it for elderly pensioners. Someone in their 80's on just the state pension has no opportunity to gain a little extra cash to help out at Xmas.

Many of us working now will be in the same position in years to come.

It's scrapped for everyone so for every layabout spending it on fags and booze there will be many more down on their luck individuals who were relying on that money for Christmas.

As a taxpayer who helps pay for it, I don't really have a problem with the idea of a Christmas bonus. I think of it more as a government stimulus, because most of it ends up in the economy anyway. Its not as if even the real spongers (and I note how everyone in receipt of it seems to be lumped into the "sponger" pigeonhole) will use it carefully or hoard it. And if the real spongers do spend it on beer and fags, a large amount of that will go straight back into the state coffers anyway. Dole money doesn't just get sucked into a black hole; it circulates. And a good portion of it will find its way back to where it started, either in the form of VAT, or in the form of PAYE, PRSI and USC paid on the wages it helps to pay, and VAT on things that are bought by the people who receive those wages, etc...

It's not as if it's added to an existing pile of cash on a bed with the recipients rolling around on it cackling gleefully.

That's the great pity of it.
I don't think they should have been relying on a bonus in the first place though.

    There will be.

The government will happily announce a Christmas bonus in the Budget to improve their ratings.

It's an expensive time of year. I wouldn't begrudge anyone a bit of extra money. I count myself lucky that I have a job and won't be relying on it.

Anyway, according to the minister and the Taoiseach, there will be a social welfare bonus this Christmas, so all the right-wing blowhards on here can breath a sigh of whatever the opposite of relief is. :)

Depending on your age, you could be in for a huge shock. Despite what those in government tell you the pension time bomb is still ticking .

If people want an xmas bonus then there should be a mechanism in place that they can have a couple of euro deducted off their weekly SW payments to be paid in a lump sum at xmas time.

Or they could just do the above themselves.

Is it a bonus? Or just paid double because won't be able to get payment during the week most are off for Christmas? Or is it a legit extra week?

I honestly don't think anyone's happy being on the dole.

It's a boring life of no purpose or meaning. It's also very damaging to self-esteem and selfworth.

People are happiest when they are busy and useful and have something to get up for in the morning.
Anyone who says they are happy on the dole are either lying to you or themselves.

The Christmas bonus is usually given out on the first week of December. That one is for the week between Christmas and New Year's because the Post Office and Social Welfare office for that week or most of it.

I think they do get a double week to cover Christmas week that they won't be able to collect payment, not sure how much the bonus is but I'm betting it's more than I get for working my ass off all year round.

Likewise. And where does it go? On presents for her grandkids or directly to her grandkids, who can't inject it back into the economy fast enough...

Last year it was 85% of your stard payment.

Not at all, just pointing out that pension time bomb has not being defused. You can of course assume the head in sand position I heard it works well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,596 ✭✭✭Hitman3000

1.2 million recieved 85 per cent of their weekly payment last December. The figure was made up of 700, 000 pensioners the rest was carers those on disability and the long term unemployed (15 months or longer).

in fairness though christmas is not a necessity for anyone.
give a helping hand to those in need, to get by each week for food & bills yeah definitely.
but to get extra for christmas is a kick in the teeth to anyone working that doesn't even get a bonus themselves in their job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 489 ✭✭Edgarfrndly

Christmas bonus takes the edge off around christmas, and helps alleviate some bills. Not all of us are in a position to work. I'm on disability due to long-term illness. I think it's a sad reflection of society that some people begrudge a little help around christmas. God forbid one of you was in a similar situation.

In all fairness why is it a kick in the teeth for you what others get ? Lets not forget that any of us could find ourselves on disability benefits or on Jobseekers .
Do you begrudge a pensioner an extra 85% of one weeks money once a year to help them out ?

On a related note, the next social welfare increase, if it's €5 like previous ones, will bring it up to €203 per week. A nuisance for post office staff. I wonder if they should maybe cap weekly payments at €200 for that year, with the extra €3 per week going into a fund, thus allowing jobseekers to occasionally request an extra €20 or so (providing evidence, of course) during weeks when they have several interviews. Job-seeking, if you're doing it properly, is not cheap.

Or maybe we could keep it for some infrastructure investment or something useful - over 200 a week to sit around on your arse all day? - what a country.
