Nicely worked goal when they played the ball at pace they opened them up but only seem to want to attack slowly most of the time.

McGrath been unlucky with a few of the fouls Joe has given against him on Canavan but probably lucky not to have a yellow aswell when they have been given

Sweeney is the only upside in that team, his pace and drive are the only game changer we have. No surprise he was involved in both goal chances. Kelly brought similar when he came on.

It's amazing what a bit of courage does. O'Flaherty has been very good taking on his man and it's opened things up a few times. Goal very well worked. Should've had a second.

This mark rule is a shambles.

Fair play to Joe for blowing it up. Better in the second half. Healey and o flatherty played well. Could've killed Rob finnerty and maher with the sloppy turn over. Kelly brings great energy, true leader of this team

"High percentage shots" - that's Galway there in a nutshell. When that's the mantra at training and the dressing room you can look forward to more pedestrian rubbish going forward.

The only joy they got today was when they drove through and took a risk.

There’s a lot more than the mark rule a shambles, tee.

Twas Darcy who gave it to Maher in a very tight spot in midfield. D'Arcy is not up to intercounty level.

Congrats Galway. Would have liked to see more long range potshots but a win is a win.

Darcy gave it to Mulkerrin I thought. Neither inspire confidence. It's amazing what a bit of pace can do once we used with with Kelly, Sweeney, O Flaherty in the 2nd half. Maher, McGrath, Heaney excellent also.

I'm amazed so many people turn up to these games on a Sunday afternoon and pay their hard earned cash.

    Dreadful stuff.

With the Galway footballers and hurlers clashing I'll be using my football season ticket this weekend. Anybody wants my two hurling season tickets for the Antrim game pm me.

Wide open through the centre yet again. You could drive a coach and four down our CB channel and never be touched.

I was going to post at half time saying they were doing alot more right today. Running at Derry, pushing up on kickouts etc. but whatever advice they got at half time they came out and dumped everything that was working for them. Had the advantage of the breeze and just went back to lazy laboured defensive muck. They're getting their reward.

Dalys terrible miss at start of 2nd half, then Molloy bad pass followed by a foul black card for molloy and penalty.. Soon down to 13 men.. Hard going from there against a virtually full strength Derry team..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,893 ✭✭✭Happyilylost

Nail on head. Those couple of minutes was the end of that game. All things considered thought it was an OK performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,028 ✭✭✭ShamNNspace

Indeed I'm not as pessimistic as I was after our first day out.. Maher is some operator, selfless running never gets the praise he deserves Imv, defence forced a good few turnovers too but more work to be done, I'm hoping we'll stay up.. At this stage I'm glad we're nowhere near a league final, championship is where it's at

It was starting to turn before then. The first half was decent but the 2nd half was a mess from the throw in.

Why stop the press when you have the breeze, surely that's when you double down.

Why go back to lateral play when punching holes with runners was yielding results.

And it all happened directly after halftime which would suggest it was instructed by management.

Shur you have to factor we were down to 13 men early in the 2nd half, management couldn't have foresaw that at half time 🤔

Niall Daly miss was three minutes into the second half. Molloy black carded on 40 minutes, Mulkerrins black carded on 45 minutes. Difficult to press the ball or move it quickly when it's 15 against 14 and then 15 against 13. Thought we started the second half on the front foot.

Derry scored their 3rd goal bang on the 55 minute when it was about to go back to 15 on 15. Sometimes you just don't get a lot of breaks.

Ya the footballers battled, I was worried they'd throw in the towel when Derry scored the 1st goal but they showed some fight. Some absolutely terrible misses killed us though, O'Conaighle with 2 bad ones, Maher, Niall Daly, Finnerty with 3 I think. At this level, 5 of those should be going over.

Our defending was very solid bar the first goal (3rd we were down a man) and the ref gave some harsh frees against us.

Didn't think either Black card was correct but Mulkerrin's foul was silly nonetheless and should educate Galway players to be smarter. Molloy's handpass was a disaster waiting to happen, he just doesn't look sharp. Would like to see him rested. He is adding nothing as it is. Flaherty is fine for now.

Unsure why Joyce didn't start O'Curraoin, we had no other right footed free taker starting.

Would like to see Kelly start (although every time he goes down I **** myself that he's injured) and Glynn for Mulkerrin.

That was Derry's A team more or less against our C team? We did ok and need to be cuter. Still think we'll be relegated on head to head

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,893 ✭✭✭Happyilylost

Just on O' Curraoin. Just after he came on they still let Heaney kick a second free from the ground (a lot more straight forward than the first he scored) didn't make much sense. A lot of poor decision making at times.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Worthwent14

Ya I couldn't understand that myself. It should have been given to O'Curraoin. Out of the hands would have narrowed the angle also by carrying it in a bit. Strange.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 903 ✭✭✭MattressRick

I'm surprised they didn't shout that instruction in. Jesus the amount of controlling and micro management that O'Neill does from the sideline makes you realise why the players are hesitating when there's a shooting opportunity. It's like they're waiting for the sideline to shout Shoot. He's barking instructions constantly when Galway are on the attack.

Harte on the other hand was very passive. Players figuring it out themselves

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 903 ✭✭✭MattressRick

I've a more positive outlook after the match than anything. Was looking dire with 1 point after 15 minutes. But they fought for the jersey all day especially when they went 9 or 10 down near the end. Was definitely Galway's second string attack and they easily left 1-3 certain scores out there.

D'Arcy i thought was very good. Probably could do with shedding a bit of weight but he moves surprisingly fast and he took that goal very well. Think he started the move too.

Ref I thought gave Conor Glass anything going. Glass just ran into a wall of Galway players in the second half and got tackled by 3 and won a free in on the 21.

Kickouts are still, and always will be, a lottery. Though for some reason we seem to win more breaking ball when the **** hitting the fan near the end. Gleeson is gonna get done again for taking too long but he doesn't have any options. He pinged a few out 30 yards when he did have an option.

Overall I'm positive. But the Monaghan match is huge for head to head.

Walsh returning is my only concern. Hope his head is right. He takes too much outta the ball in my opinion. Sometimes he starts, and messes up, attacks without even looking around for an option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,355 ✭✭✭threeball

Walsh coming back could be a negative. As you said, he takes too much time on the ball, uses his pace sparingly and has gotten really lazy since the AIF. Really noticeable when he plays for Kilmacud how little he does when out of possession. Only comes to life with ball in hand and then its often a couple of solos, twist, turn, lay it off. If he's doing that little off the ball, he needs to be burning lads when he gets it, drawing defenders and laying it off to create overlaps. He looks like he's carrying too much weight to play that role though.

Comer will likely be injured again within 2-3 games of returning, so you could only really rely on Silke and hopefully McDaid to make an impact.

Comer and McDaid spend more time out injured than fit, obviously when fully fit they transform the team, but, they can't be relied upon to stay fit. Walsh on form is a real game changer, but, it's up the the management to get the best out of him. If the management can get those three on the field and in form, then it totally changes our championship prospects.
