Ireland has conscription? News to me.

I made this distinction between family and country already. Of course I would fight for my friends and family. That is perfectly natural to all of us. To extend my family to include a nation and expect me to give my life for it? That is a dangerous ideology that is far too prevalent.

Conscription would be brought as an emergency measure. So your choice is fight or go to prison.

I don't understand how you can separate fighting for your family from fighting for your country. Say you're a British person in WWII. You want to fight to protect your family from the Germans but you won't because that would involve fighting for your country? How would that work?

I'd laugh... Then I'd buy some vaseline...let's face it no one would be bothered fighting for Ireland. We'd just hand it over like good little neutrals.

Probably more than the “old Irish” with their “artificial construct” malarkey. Certainly any who got citizenship are proud of it (the rest aren’t officially Irish).

You genuinely think that the Africans, Middle Easterners and any other groups that have come here to sponge off our welfare benefits would risk their lives to defend this Country if we were invaded?

I have a nice bridge in Brooklyn, NY I would like to sell you. Slightly used.

I think most of them would and being middle class doesn't automatically make you a wanker anymore than being from the slums makes you a scumbag.

I agree with you, but the reality is someone from the slums is more likely to fight than someone from the middle class, it always amazes me how people on the lower end of the economic ladder always hang onto patriotism a lot more than those on the higher end.
