Mine was basic - only extras were the folding mirrors, wheels, brakes and high beam assist. 92k km I think it had on it, rear tyres needed doing and I thought I'd won the lotto getting €22k for it last year. It did have 9 months BMW warranty on it and was just serviced.

You've got a lot more spec, x drive but higher miles. I reckon private sale somewhere around the 20k mark is where it's at. Lovely motor, and looks seriously clean.

<vulture>Do those rear lights fit the saloon?<vulture>

Cheers, I'd agree with ye on that.

On the lights....I'm not sure tbh. I think the LCI saloon also needs little plastic gutters that I didn't need for the touring.

Part numbers differ between saloon and touring. Mine are 63212450110 and think saloon ends in 05.

Sure it costs nothing to spend hours on autotrader/pistonheads etc and trying to man math different stuff, and if I do nothing for a while I still really like my own motor.

Quick question about VRT, if I buy a car from the north, can I park it up for a few months and pay VRT say 3 months down the line without any penalties?

Also, the omsp is €2,000 on the VRT calculator meaning the VRT would be about €800. In reality, the car is worth about €15,000, so is the actual VRT likely going to be a lot more?

I don't think you can park it up, needs to be within 30 days of entering the state. I presume it's a private sale so not sure how they can prove when you brought it in though.

What car is it that is undervalued like that?

Ah ok. Yeah it’s private, I guess I could buy the car and delay all the paperwork part of it if the seller would agree to it.

It’s an Impreza sti. Omsp showing as about 2k on the calculator but they look to be going for about 13-20k here.

Does the Co2 figure on VRT calculator exactly match the figure of the particular car? If not, you’re rolling the dice on the revenue valuation.

Looked up the official co2 figure for the car and it’s 242 g/km, vrt calculator is also showing 242

That’s good start. I wouldn’t take the calculator as a 100% guarantee of what they’ll charge, but it has to be worth chancing

Thanks, really like the car but it wouldn’t make financial sense if the vrt ends up being 3-4k.

You’ll probably have nox charge of €600 as well as I doubt there’s a documented nox figure for it.

Yeah have that taken into account too.

You’ll need a dated hand written invoice to vrt the car from a private sale, Don’t write the date at the time of sale. Write the date when your ready to vrt

Or be a good citizen and pay the late penalty. It would be feck all even after 3 months on an €800 vrt.

    I think the late fee is VRT x 0.1% x amount of days late so say €800 x 0.1% x 90 = €72

Edit: It would be €172. Theres a €100 charge even if your one day late

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Ciano35

    Thanks user much appreciated.

So if I do it all properly then I need a hand written invoice, book an nct inspection within 7 days, and vrt within 30 days.

Can I declare it off the road straight away or would it need to be taxed first?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,088 ✭✭✭User1998

You need to tax the car to get the Irish logbook so it will have to be taxed anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,541 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

You can declare it off the road without taxing but you need to do it ASAP

Just make sure the UK V5 states the same. You're in the top bracket anyway I think so it can't really be any worse. The only thing that could make it worse is if they adjust the omsp, so get a screen shot/print out of what yours is now should help.

And feck paying late fees, the seller may agree to let you buy it and do paper work later if your reasons are genuine enough. It's a niche enough car so not owned by a typical motorist so hopefully they understand your ask.

Ok so on the v5 emissions it has 257, which is higher than the vrt calculator figure of 242. So this would cause me some headaches I guess?

Well they will be quick to come up with a VRT price but I've a gut feeling it's going to be an awful lot more than the calculator - maybe a few thousand depending on the car etc ? (The price you purchase the vehicle for is irrelevant, it's the OMSP they want)

Then don't forget your NoX tax ! Again depending on car and year could be only a few hundred or anything up to 3/4K

There's about 6 Imprezas on the NoX list and all petrol ones are less than 300 euro

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,397 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Nox is capped at 600 if it isn't diesel(lucky us). Youre in the top band of 226 or more at 27% already. If the other car on their calculator is the same description as yours, make, model, year, millage etc I think they would have to value your car at around the same. The bill is still going to be 27% of that market value so if it was me I'd go for it based on what you have. If I'm wrong though, I'm not paying the difference :)

Different CO2 means different statistical code which means it would be sent off for valuation and if they are truly going for 15k, you’d want to take that into account!

Passed the 400,000km mark yesterday morning in the A6. Another 300km by last night.. Not a bother on her.

    Fantastic machine :)

Yup.. 2010 (last of the c6 generation so all the bugs worked out) 3.0 TDI Quattro S-Line LeMans 240(ish) bhp and tiptronic.

Lots of toys including 19 inch alloys, heated electric leather seats, DAB radio, built in mp3 jukebox and 6cd changer (the latter of which I've never used), BOSE audio, Bluetooth, satnav, front and rear parking sensors with display, auto lights, auto wipers, auto dimming mirrors (with the passenger one automatically angling down when reversing), dual zone climate control, xenons, DRLs, front fogs, cruise control, paddle shifters... and probably some other stuff I've left out :)

The biggest problem I have with it is trying to find something equivalent or better to replace it with when the time comes!

Rebuild the engine or whatever and drive on until we're all driving around in fusion powered hoverpods. You owe it that at this stage. :D

It can be easy enough to get a basic no frills well made car to that kinda mileage, but not so easy with all the toys and with them all still working. Nice one.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

I think I'd happily drive on another few years in her, but the insurance companies and their policies of pricing bigger older cars off the road are against it - experienced this previously with my 05 model of the same car where at 11 years old, several were refusing to quote at all.

Then there's the annual NCT requirement. My car is serviced on time or when something needs doing but it's an extra expense and the very real chance of a retest fee for something trivial.

Unfortunately I reckon I'll have to really be thinking about the change this time next year but as I say, the challenge will be getting something with the same spec and power for the same 20k I paid for this one a bit over 3 years ago.

Don't get me started on those [expletives deleted] K and manufacturers, government and the financial sector. Eff all about "risk", or the "environment" or "safety" and much more about pimping the consumer churn for vested interests like themselves.

That sounds like it will be tough to replace without massive wallet surgery alright. I was wondering about the year as you do hear of that v6 tdi engine giving hassle. A lemans spec a6 estate is on my radar for future motors.

Yea my 05 had the well known chain rattle on startup problem which can ultimately lead to stretching and breaking but it would have meant big money taking the engine out and replacing it so it just wasn't worth it for a 10 year old car with high mileage and a 1500 Euro motor tax bill.

Luckily aside from the rattle for a few seconds, there was no other problem.

My 2010 face-lift though has been perfect in that regard even with nearly double the mileage.

I'm actually thinking about going to an A8 next as the basic spec is higher so I'm more likely to get most/all of what I have now and older examples are common enough within the budget I'm thinking... But against that I'm told servicing will be more expensive as the parts are different in many cases, as opposed to the common bin the A4/6 and others in the range share.
