Thanks! I'm happy enough to buy the Octavia outright but everyone I've talked to has said that it'll depreciate too much over the next few years so going PCP on a new car again is the better option.

You've been talking to the wrong people. A car depreciates more in it's first 3 years than it ever will again. 3-6 years is probably the sweet spot of ownership where you have a fresh car but aren't hit by too much depreciation.

    That makes no sense.

Brand new cars suffer their highest level of depreciation in the first 3 years of their life which you are paying that depreciation in your monthly PCP repayments. The depreciation rate then decreases as the car gets older. Also there is a new model Octavia being launched very soon so be very careful about taking an existing model out on PCP now when it's about to be replaced. You will have less equity in it in 3 years time.

Was driving the Leon around the place today and noticed something just seemed different about how others drivers / cars were acting around me. Didn't realise it until I got out of the car. It has L plates on it from the brother learning to drive in it. Its funny how some other drivers react when they see the plates some are more cautious and give you more lee way which it good. But then you get others which are more edgy just waiting for you to make a mistake so they can beep at you

Probably a few people thought look at the guy driving around on L plates on his own :pac:

Also first time in about two months driving a manual it is weird for the first minute or two but then it comes straight back to you. Funny I have always been fond of manuals and a lot of people that get a DSG / Auto car say they would never go back to manuals don't think I will ever be like that. It does really depend on the car and the type of driving you do as to which suits better.

You'll need to replace it soon so.

Fun story* when the Gen 6 Accord was replaced by the Gen 7 in 2003 - 3 year old Gen 6s dropped advertised prices by quite a lot.

In February 2003 a 3 year old Gen 6 was still the CURRENT Accord.

In April 03 it was the OLD model - people like the idea of the three year old car looking same or similar to the new one you can buy.

*Not so fun if you delayed selling a Gen 6 Accord of 2000 vintage by a week or 2 at the wrong time in around March or April 2003 obviously

Well the GFMV on it was probably 45% of the new price at most.
Worst case scenario it can only depreciate from that amount to zero from now on and that won't happen over the next 3 years.

Got another bloody puncture front tyre this time second in a matter of weeks  before that last time I got a puncture was when I was in first year of college (2013).

Strike two on the three strike policy the car would want to cop itself on or it won’t last long at this rate :pac:

Was it a nail or a pothole?

I noticed a deep gouge wound in my front offside the other day. Tyres are not far off 3mm left so at least it's not too annoying.

You'd have to wonder about having anything less than 40 profile these days unless you only ever drive on decent roads. You'd almost understand why people put €40 dingalings on all round!

I had to get two new tyres for my GTD at the weekend. I got a puncture on the way to Mayo for the weekend and managed to get it plugged but my tyres were worn on the inside due to alignment being out. 270 for two Goodyear's plus alignment was the best deal I could find for any sort of a decent tyres. A lot of places just had Chinese stuff and it wasn't a hell of a lot cheaper, between 85-110 each per tyre in the places I tried.

That sounds like a decent price tbh. I paid 150 a corner for the F1 Asy 3s last time. I get alignment free if I buy 4!

Nail this time was a screw last time. Wouldn't say I would get any decent tyre for it for under €150 a corner. Although there is about 5mm of thread on the fronts and the nail is a good bit in so hoping I will be able to get it patched.

Yeah it wasn't too bad, they were 120 each and 30 for alignment. They are not eagle f1, they are EfficientGrip, I've had the Eagle f1 before and they seem just as good so far anyway. Great wet grip and they are extremely quiet with almost zero road noise. I will prob get two more for the rear as they are coming towards the wear indicators now too.

Are your alloys 18/19 inch ? I didn't think you could even get efficient grips in any kind of a big size.

The standard 18" Nogaro wheels on the mk7. I hadn't realised you could either to be honest.

Question, bought a car from a dealer and he told me that they do the transfer of ownership online for Shannon.
Is that correct? Said it takes 5 days.
Bought it Friday so I know I'm too early to see it on the motortax site.

    It's true, it's much quicker.

You will be able to see change of you look up, but it won't be straight away.

Yeah no changes so far online.

Figured as much. Just hoping it comes before October as that's when it's leaving the country.

Driving home this evening, on a national road doing about 65 or 70mph I see a motorbike closing in at serious speed. Move over a little to let him by and he flies by, guessing at 120 or 130 mph. Just as he passes me I spot a speed van pointing it's back doors right at us. What's the story with doing double the speed limit and getting caught by a van? Letter in the post for court I presume?

He would need a front reg plate in that case to be caught, if the front of the van was facing you then he was done presuming his rear plate is legible.

Is it still the case that main dealers parts departments only sell body panels primed and you can’t order them pre painted to the cars colour ? Specifically VW mirror covers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

You can get pre painted mirror caps for most VW stuff. They are strongly priced compared to a primed one though, so a lot of dealers will order a primed one and get it painted locally.

What roughly would a strong price be if it wasn’t completely mad would be a lot handier just get them painted ? I had it in my head primed ones would be about €50 each or am I way out. I keep meaning to ring a dealer but every time I think of it they are closed.

I priced one for a 2015 Transporter the other day, a primed one was €35 and painting locally was €50, a painted one from VW was €120.

The commercial stuff is generally a but cheaper across the board but it gives you an idea. It may be worth the extra for handyness.
