At this point it most likely is for the likes of Galway and Mayo and Roscommon too although they struggled to break them down on their last visit. New York brought Leitrim to extra time last year and from listening to it on the radio and from talking to people who were there (~a good quarter of Leitrim most likely) from an entertainment perspective one of the games of 2018! Easier to get boys to commit if they think they've a chance against lower ranked teams compared to going up against Mayo and Galway perhaps too.

God help the GAA if they do ever win because there is zero accommodation made for NY to progress in Connacht or for the team they defeat to enter the qualifiers.

Similar to what happened when NY actually won an Ulster hurling match in the last decade. They were swiftly removed from the following years competition

Have RTE announced their fixtures yet?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 320 ✭✭WillieMason

    I'm not sure it will

It's a glorified challenge match (for Mayo and Galway anyway)

People might tune in to see the novelty of it but may be watching something else well before half time.

Like the glorified challenges Dublin get in Leinster or kerry get in munster?

Would be great to see Tg4 showing some McDonagh and Ring games and also some of the championship games that RTE/Sky dont want.

Don't they show the finals of those competitions online?

I know it's not the same, but it's something. I agree it would be good if they were to show some of the mcdonagh matches (i.e Offaly and laois) that won't be shown (or at best given lip service) by rte and sky.

In time Munster and Leinster will again be competitive.

    NY never will be.

New York lost after extra time last year. Three of the 5 teams they can play were division 1 teams this year. Kerry dont play any division 1 teams. The Munster and Leinster champions will be Dublin and Kerry again this year. Its boring and predicable.

One football match before the provincial finals. Though you probably wouldn't drop one of those SHC games for any of them in fairness.

Does BBC have any rights or is it just what RTE are showing the BBC are showing?

Im all for watching Hurling but would't mind the odd football game in May At least....

No word of TG4 picking up any more after getting the NY-Mayo game? There's a few I'd like to see in the Leinster or Ulster SFC but then again they'd probably need rescheduled to not clash with RTÉ/Sky and the teams wouldn't be up for it.

they tweeted back to that hoganstand tweet (that me89 mentioned) and said they don't have the rights for it.

Pity. How many more years has this one to run?

    2 more after this year

Goes back to the old chestnut that the GAA increased the amount of championship games (league format in hurling, super 8's in football) and didn't increase the amount of games shown. Incredible when you think about it. If they went to the existing broadcasters and gave them first refusal for an additional 8 game package let's say. Then in the unlikely event either turned this down - virgin or tg4 would bite their hands off for those games.

That's because the increase in games happened in the middle of a TV contract not at the end.

Once this contract is complete there will be scope to change the number of games broadcast.

I dont know how Sky/RTE haven't kicked up a bigger fuss about the increased games and same coverage. And they'll show the hurling that was on that day first up on the Sunday game.

Would they be better selling the rights as separate packages? AI/Munster/Leinster hurling rights, lower tier hurling package and all or Provincial/Qualifier/AI football packages? They could limit the games that can be shown in each package but allow more guaranteed coverage eg every county has to have at least 1 game shown in the 3/4 year contract?

Leinster hurling is really being kicked around with that schedule. It's the poor relation.

BBC will mirror the RTÉ live games from the Ulster Championship

In addition, they will probably show deferred coverage of games not shown live.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,366 ✭✭✭franglan

Agree with all above, it's just exceptionally short sighted signing a new 5 year TV deal and to note an exclusive national radio deal with rte and then the next year ripping up the format of both senior intercounty competitions, adding extra games and not adding additional games in TV whatever way you can - as we've said rte/sky or someone else would love to have the additional games. It leaves us fans who love championship but aren't going to travel decent distances to watch competitive games where your own county isint playing. A lot of football teams will be out of their respective provincal championships before a football game is shown on RTÉ!

  • Registered Users Posts: 693 ✭✭✭grbear

Are we stuck with the same situation as last year where there will be no Saturday night highlights programme either? They really need to go back and change those TV deals even if that involves taking some financial hit. They aren't fit for purpose.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Bummer1234

BBC picking up a few extra games
The first two live matches will be Antrim v Tyrone or Derry on Saturday 25 May and Fermanagh v Donegal on 26 May.

The semi-final on Saturday 8 June and the final on Sunday 23 June will also be broadcast live by BBC NI.

The deferred games will be Tyrone v Derry, Cavan v Monaghan, Down v Armagh and the first semi-final on 2 June.

Wow, that's a change - up until last year they said they could only show what RTÉ was showing iirc.
