Plenty of sun here for the past couple of days but freezing with wind chill. Air temps of 5-6 on the afternoon but feeling much colder. Whether we're getting some sort of leading edge of this cold weather I don't know. What's unusual for cold like this is that it's coming from the SE. I'm becoming a believer.

Both the Met E forecast and MT Craniums are very similar. I have followed the weather forum for years. They are much more forward looking than Met E. And they realise things do change, often at the last minute. And, yes, they are weather enthusiasts so you can expect them to light up when exceptional weather is forecast. I've gotten good advance warning of significant weather events over the years from reading their posts. Some of the contributors are obviously working with weather, either forecasting or as past of their jobs/hobbies. They know their stuff, try reading a technical thread..... I just look at the pretty pictures..

George did right to warn everyone. Thankfully the message seems to have gotten out and most people will be watching the forecasts even if they haven't been prompted to action. I've made a few minor preparations I might not have done without warnings.

Incidentally, a farmer I was with yesterday said the big snow of '47 started on the 25th Feb....... quite late in the year but....

Ah yer like myself! Love reading the technical threads and looking at the charts. Can't make them out and some of the talk over there is beyond me, but ya pick up bits and pieces (plus learn what each day of the week is in French from the charts too!).

I read MTC's weather reports everyday and find him to be the most accurate forecaster, and I include ME in that. When I said "I assume the experts are ME", I was referring to the post I quoted who said they'd listen to the experts.

Personally, I prefer the weather forum here cos it will give a prediction way in advance of ME, which can be super. Like, for example, yesterday I moved loads of bales for a man as my auld lad told him bad weather was coming, based on what I had said to me auld lad. Now without this forum, and me, and the auld lad, he would have waited for ME forecast and they haven't yet upped their warning. So he could have been stuck with a shed of sucklers and his silage 5 miles away in a field and no way to move it. So the forum here has meant his cattle won't go hungry, and he can have a little less stress if the weather does turn bad.

It's coming from the SE because last year I sunk a new well 200m to the SE and didn't get round to trenching the pipe line yet.

Lovely morning here in North Wexford.... if you're driving or in the sun/out of the breeze. Real high pressure weather, clear blue skies and sunshine. Makes you think you're in summer until you realise all those snow pictures from Scandinavia come with blue skies and sunshine too.

You reminded me of another. If your lock is frozen. Use a lighter and heat the metal of your key up. Might take a few goes but it will melt it eventually. Never use water

Once you realise there's an element of uncertainty about the whole thing that increases the further out you look then you can keep an eye on potential developments and see how they fizzle out or become more certain. Met E are fine but you don't get enough warning until it's on top of you. Sometimes more warning would be useful.

Met E have to be seen to be responsible and not to be crying wolf. The weather forum chaps can call it as they see it and then see how it plays out.

George seems to know his stuff going by his posts over there. He gave a very good summary of the state of play at the time in his posts.

It's great, went up the fields in the jeep and didn't get stuck. Didn't even need 4wd

Today is beautiful day. I put all sheep in sheds yesterday night as it would be kinder for mN and beast for the week with feeding etc. But worried about viral now in this heat. Good open shed but they are well packed in.

The big snow of ‘47, 5 foot drifts in places, the Uncle being 4’10” wasn’t seen for months.

You might be best not to do that this time round. At what temps does flesh stick to metal?

You'd nearly get run over here with the amount of slurry tankers out and about. Great weather for it.

Crossing a few bridges couldn't believe how much the river Suck has gone back. Must be a delight to the lads farming along its banks.

Not a cloud in the sky. No clouds, no rain. Will be very very cold no doubt but will welcome it with open arms.

Just back in now. Chopping some extra fire wood for the next few days. Feel great. The air outside is so lovely, clean and crispy. Hardly a puff of breeze out there

The drying is unreal. Checked a mare in a field, the muddy bit by the gate usually needs wellies but walked though it in shoes today. Ground was solid, no squelching.

Just I'm from a run and it was lovely out there. Say that'll be my last one outside till the madness passes

Wind blowing here with the last 24 hours, South easterly about 6 degrees all day. Cows out last night and 2nite to clear a few covers in the one direction for umbilical 2moro. Will prob put them in 2moro while lads are here as they may be going different directions and cows will only be in in the way. Heavier slurry heading for silage ground and lighter covers, watery stuff heading for ground with a bit of cover and will keep 30 acres free to get cows out

All the comments on drying.... what is said around here is that the springs dry up before a big snow. Haven't found one to check. Ground was 'dry' last night late but the heavy frost may have had a part in that. :)

Another notable comment from those that remember is that it's not just the depth of snow to factor in, it's the wind causing drifting. That you can see grass over the fence isn't much use to you if you're stuck in three feet of drifted snow.

I was wandering around today and checked up on a couple of mares I normally look after in harsh weather. Their pond they usually get water in has gone back to a mere trickle but few more coming down from the hill under them. Ground they're on is dry as a bone, though it's never had anything more than a 135 on it and no fert in the last 20+ yrs, before that it would have been dung. Proper Leitrim wintering land!

Am just worried now what they'll do for water, I'll have to plead (harass) someone to bring stuff for them.
