The shuttles are done in groups of about 6 and then if you fail you fail everything and repeat the whole lot on a separate day which you can defer til you're ready!

Ok thanks a million for reply!

The Prison Service has it's own Credit Union. I'm a member but couldn't say for sure if it's a whole lot better or a whole lot worse than other CUs'. They are easy to deal with though, most dealings can be done online or over the phone as members are scattered all around the country. Deductions are made at source as well which makes things easy.
There's also a Private healthcare scheme, Prison Officers Medical Aid Scheme (POMAS) It's not cheap but does offer a very good level of care in comparison to 'outside' schemes for the same price.
Childcare, I know nothing about but have never heard of any sort of childcare benefits or assistance.

Shift patterns vary from Prison to Prison but for anyone on a 7 Day Liability Roster you're basically due on 7 days out of every 14. These days would be based on an 8 to 8 day but there's all sorts of varieties of shifts. Different jails have different needs so rosters are going to vary. There's Night Shifts, 8 to 5, 10 to 10, and a few other variations. On that roster you'll be due on every second weekend - Fri, Sat, Sun. It's not easy to explain but I went into it in more detail somewhere else on this thread I think..

Hi. Quick question. I have been told that I may be starting in July/August time. However I booked a holiday for September for a week. It was booked months ago. Can anyone tell me if I start in IPS round July/August time would I have to cancel the booked holiday or would allowances be made?

Just guessing but.... If you start in July you'd probably just be ok (apart from the fact that you wouldn't have leave built up) but if it's August I can see you having to cancel. Can't see them giving you leave during your time in the Training College but if you're posted to a Jail by then it should be ok.

Just to be safe I'd cancel or defer the holiday to October.

You will have 12 weeks training during which time they will not give leave except in extreme circumstance's you may be able to differ your start time to the next class if needed. You should be ok if you are assigned to a prison in time for your holiday you would just need to see your H.R. Governor with your tickets in hand so to speak. Leave is given out on a seniority based system but September is not normally the high session for leave.

I would suggest contacting I.P.S. and seeking advice before starting as they will tell you more direct what your best options are.

what are shift patterns like in ips?? They are different in each Prison but are based around roster groups and a 39hr week so to give an ex-sample.
If their is 22 roster groups your roster will be worked out to give a average 39hr's a week over a 22 week period. So you would have 7 Nights to do during a 22 week period, you'd also have a number of early start's and late finish's, dinner guards, tea guards etc. also spread out during the same 22 weeks. The groups are also divided into odd and even numbered one's as to which groups are what side of the roster. I.e all even numbers on the same side all odd one's on the opposite side.

But in saying that the normal part of 7 day liability over 14 day's is as follows.

Saturday & Sunday on (2days off) Wednesday & Thursday on (3days off) Monday & Tuesday on (2days off) Friday on (and start back at beginning)

are their perks outside of pay for the IPS?? Yes your leave is given in hours not days so with the roster if you work your leave right and only take it in the weeks with less due on hours you can take more weeks of leave :-). i.e. a 8-8 days with no dinner guard is 11hrs but a 8-8 with dinner guard is 12hrs also nights is 12hrs etc.
iv heard things like supports with childcare (20yr's service's never heard anything on child care but don't have kids so never needed to find out. However the parental leave and some maternity leaves is available to both sexes and you can get extra leave if you get married just for the honeymoon not ongoing at least you could I think it still applies)
or credit union loan (we have our own credit union which has never been in the red and is good for loans as your repayments are deducted at source before you get your wages so you can't really default on it. In saying that things have gotten more difficult with that due to the new government rules that apply to all credit unions after the carry on of certain credit unions around the country, but the interest rate is still one of the lowest)
deals little things like that Some deals can be had on certain things for members of the POA they will be in the diary that you'll be given trusting you join the Union.
and medical expenses that are either work related This would be from the criminal injuries scheme not IPS or not work related are covered by POMAS if you join it not ips now this is what I have heard so if some one can confirm this is true or not id appreciate it Hope I have answered what you asked.

    Hi guys

I was unsuccessful in the 2018 campaign and I'm applying again in the 2019 campaign.

Did anyone who was successful get interview coaching or is there any company/professional anyone could recommend for the stage 3 prison interview?

I have looked around in my local area and the person I got in touch with specialises more with private companies/business careers and was extremely expensive...

I know there is people who do it for the garda and just hoping someone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated

    Thank you

Yes I done the preparation course through career services it's a full day course they take place in Dublin and Cork. Would highly recommend it as it made my interview a lot easier they go through all the competency questions and group sessions etc. I think it was 100/150 euro to do can't fully remember but was definitely worth it for me as I flew through the interview thanks to it. You should look into it soon because I left it to late and missed out on the Dublin one as it was fully booked and had to drive 3 hours down to Cork to do it but was all worth it in the end ðŸ˜

Thanks for your reply. I did the stage 1&2 preparation course there recently with career service in Dublin. Will be hoping to do the stage 3 prep course aswell. Yeah I think it's going to be about €160 so can start saving now for it. I wouldnt mind the drive whenever it is but Dublin would be more convenient. I was just hoping to know if anyone went anywhere else but you seem very happy with the stage 3 course from career services and as you said you flew through it. So hopefully that stage 3 course will be enough for me and good solid preparation will help me pass this time around. I missed it by a small margin last year so very determined to get it this year. Have you started training yet? Thanks again for replying :)
