    Wow

It's honestly the best gadget I've ever bought, and I'm in buying gadgets a long long time.

I don't doubt that but what do you use it for?

The whole house use it. It's our main entertainment centre at the living room TV ties in well with the rest of the home automation stuff, lights, harmony remote, Google Home etc. It gets used for the following

    Media
    TV channels using IPTV,
Emby, Netflix, Amazon prime video for shows and movies
YouTube, Spotify, TuneIn and other apps

    Gaming
Android games, emulated console games (PlayStation, Nintendo, Sega etc)
    Nvidia Gamestream, Nvidia, Nvidia GeforceNow

    Google a few reviews

Can do most if not all of those media things with a Chromecast. I don't have an IPTV sub either.

The gaming is fair enough but again I personally wouldn't get much if any use out of that.

No, you don't get the same experience with a Chromecast. Chromecast is handy but it's not the same as controlling a box with a remote and a dedicated app. The Shield has Chromecast and Google assistant built in and has a mic

Google some reviews there's plenty of them if you look

To be honest, I would stick to your current set up as you either don't know how to use or have no need to use it. If you honestly think that you get the same performance, picture quality etc. from a Chromecast....well....fair play to you. You would be in a minority of one though....

Not a hope via Chromecast, quality limited

There is no Android TV app, you need to sidleoad the mobile APK and use it that way.

You can get a layout changer app that displays mobile apps full screen, makes the All4 app useable.

What layout changer app did you use?

I'd like to know this too.

Follow the steps below to change the DNS settings on your Android device.

Navigate to "Settings", "WiFi" (click on the "WiFi" text, not the ON/OFF switch).
Press and hold the preferred (or active) wireless network until a dialog pops up.
Select "Modify" then select the "Show advanced options" checkbox at the bottom.
    Switch "IP settings" to "Static".
Keep the IP address, Gateway and Network prefix length the same, but change the DNS setting to our servers.
    "Save", then restart your device.
If you use multiple Wi-Fi connections, you will need update the DNS settings for each connection.

I have a wired connection, have followed the DNS steps but no joy. It's wrecking my head, think ill just send it back

I'm wondering what the best way to get my data onto an external drive connected to the Shield is?
I have the Shield set up as a Plex Media Server, and have the films and shows I want on an old computer. I was hoping I could connect to the Shield and the External drive over the network and transfer the files that way, but it looks like I can only access the Shield's internal storage.
What do other people do when they want to add new files? I can of course unplug the drive and plug it into another computer, but surely there's a better way of doing it?

I have the exact same problem. Configure everything for Ethernet and then get told Ethernet is not connected. Switch back to DHCP and Ethernet works fine.

I got getflix working on the ipad no problem. Can’t get it working on the Shield.

Hate to ask but are you sure the gateway address is correct?

    For me:

    Gateway = 192.168.1.1

    Static = 192.168.1.109

Other routers might be a 192.168.2.x Address

The gateway is always the route to the internet, the IP of your router, whatever that is.

What??? Give up on the first little hurdle?

Post the settings you're trying and we'll see if you're doing it right. I have a static IP and DNS on mine no issues

Had a quick search and couldn't find anything, sorry if it's been answered before.

What's the best way to continue using an existing external hard drive with media on it for the Shield?

I'd like to use the shield to continue to write / edit / delete file but not sure if it's possible Right now I can of course read files but wouldn't mind having the other options.

With the Dream Player for Android TV app you can add a bouquet from your enigma 2 satellite box to live channels in Android TV on your Shield. It even has homescreen channels so you can have any or all of your bouquets with picons laid out on the homescreen

This just arrived this morning after an impulse black friday buy.

Is there a guide available for the best way to set it up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,052 ✭✭✭nedd

The way I set mine up for GetFlix (that isn’t working):

    IP Settings / Static
Set IP address of Shield 192.168.1.3 (this is the address that the router has assigned)
    Gateway 192.168.1.254 (router IP)
DNS - Dublin IP Address from GetFlix site
DNS 2 - i have left this as is, or tried London IP address from GetFlix
Network size or whatever that is, leave at 24.

Get error saying Ethernet is not connected.

I will try it again this evening and restart after making the setting changes to see if that works.

Are you wirelessly connected using this IP? Try a different IP address that's not in use.

That is the IP assigned by the router when connected with Ethernet.

Give it a different one that's not in use. You can check the router to see what range of IPs DHCP is assigning from, give it one outside the DHCP pool

That's what I was thinking THHB..

I've been subscribed to this thread for months, and the Bargain Alerts one, but still, with it at its lowest price ever, haven't pulled the trigger on this.
I sold my NUC, so have the funds for it, but I'm struggling to justify it when about 90% of my viewing is covered by my smart TV.

It's a 2 year old LG, and I've had no issues with Youtube, Netflix, iPlayer and the IPTV app I use.
The only thing it lacks, really, is the ability to play the different codecs of downloaded / ripped stuff I have locally.

Can anyone convince me why I should use the Shield for all of the above - is it super smooth?
Should I expect the smart features of the tv to start to get glitchy after a couple of years?

Add an 85TB Emby library with all artwork, posters, logos and fanart to that LG TV and see how it stops to a painfully slow crawl. The Shield handles it and every task I throw at it without breaking a sweat.

Watch the YouTube review I posted a page back.

The trouble with smart TVs is they have very weak hardware and don't get support for very long

TBH, i really didn't need much convincing, and (perhaps softened up by some of your bargains from the Booze thread OmegaGene), that's endorsement enough for me :)

    Sold.

A propos, OmegaGene, t'was yourself that recommended me an (excellent) IPTV provider - what app do you use on the Sheild - is it STBEmu?

That's what I use on my cheapo android box, and it works a charm, but wondering if there's a better option, for EPG in particular..

edit: I'm not a gamer, but I bought the version with the controller - I reckon I'll spend a nice couple of evenings playing emulated versions of the last real video games I was into - the ZX Spectrum 48k - (I presume I'll find Manic Miner, Attic Attack, Horace Goes Skiiing, Uridium etc easy enough), and sell it for the extra that it cost..

What are people's thoughts on the best IPTV app?

Recieved my shield, haven't started it yet but very impressive piece of kit. The main use I plan for it is Kodi, but tempted to try an IPTV. Curious though, what is speeds like with Getflix VPN on this?

Not wanting to take over this thread with Plex issues, but I still cannot, for the life of me, get this bloody Plex working!

    I did the following.
    1. Plugged my 1TB storage device in and it ran in the background reading it.
    2. I then plugged it out and connected it to my laptop. I saw that it created a "NVIDIA_SHIELD" folder.
    3. I then copied all my movies and TV shows, as sub folders, into this new folder on the root of the drive.
    4. Launched Plex and signed in.
    5. In PLEX MEDIA SERVER, I changed the Storage location to my external hard drive. The Storage Location has now changed showing my external drive.
    6. I saw that Plex Media Server is Stopped, so I change it to "on" and a pop up appears saying "Please wait while Plex Media Server starts" and then closes, but the server doesn't actually start.

When I go to the library, I can't see any of my media files.

Is there something obvious I'm missing?
I had to remove all updates for plex on my shield to get it working initially. After you've done the setup are you logging in to the web app (https://plex.tv/web) to finish adding your media? You'll need to point the movie section to your movie folder and the tv section to your tv folder
