nvidia Shield - Tips & tricks [Read post #1]

So folks, got the 16GB from Santa. Really enjoying it so far. Superb build quality, both controllers are excellent. Speech function works very well. Downloaded Mame from the play store & Kodi.

Only scratching the surface at this point I’m sure, so what have you done with yours? Any recommendations ?

What are people's thoughts on the best IPTV app?

A propos, OmegaGene, t'was yourself that recommended me an (excellent) IPTV provider - what app do you use on the Sheild - is it STBEmu?

That's what I use on my cheapo android box, and it works a charm, but wondering if there's a better option, for EPG in particular..

edit: I'm not a gamer, but I bought the version with the controller - I reckon I'll spend a nice couple of evenings playing emulated versions of the last real video games I was into - the ZX Spectrum 48k - (I presume I'll find Manic Miner, Attic Attack, Horace Goes Skiiing, Uridium etc easy enough), and sell it for the extra that it cost..

TBH, i really didn't need much convincing, and (perhaps softened up by some of your bargains from the Booze thread OmegaGene), that's endorsement enough for me

Add an 85TB Emby library with all artwork, posters, logos and fanart to that LG TV and see how it stops to a painfully slow crawl. The Shield handles it and every task I throw at it without breaking a sweat.

I've been subscribed to this thread for months, and the Bargain Alerts one, but still, with it at its lowest price ever, haven't pulled the trigger on this.
I sold my NUC, so have the funds for it, but I'm struggling to justify it when about 90% of my viewing is covered by my smart TV.

It's a 2 year old LG, and I've had no issues with Youtube, Netflix, iPlayer and the IPTV app I use.
The only thing it lacks, really, is the ability to play the different codecs of downloaded / ripped stuff I have locally.

Can anyone convince me why I should use the Shield for all of the above - is it super smooth?
Should I expect the smart features of the tv to start to get glitchy after a couple of years?

With the Dream Player for Android TV app you can add a bouquet from your enigma 2 satellite box to live channels in Android TV on your Shield. It even has homescreen channels so you can have any or all of your bouquets with picons laid out on the homescreen

What's the best way to continue using an existing external hard drive with media on it for the Shield?

I'd like to use the shield to continue to write / edit / delete file but not sure if it's possible Right now I can of course read files but wouldn't mind having the other options.

What??? Give up on the first little hurdle?

Post the settings you're trying and we'll see if you're doing it right. I have a static IP and DNS on mine no issues

The gateway is always the route to the internet, the IP of your router, whatever that is.

I have the exact same problem. Configure everything for Ethernet and then get told Ethernet is not connected. Switch back to DHCP and Ethernet works fine.

I'm wondering what the best way to get my data onto an external drive connected to the Shield is?
I have the Shield set up as a Plex Media Server, and have the films and shows I want on an old computer. I was hoping I could connect to the Shield and the External drive over the network and transfer the files that way, but it looks like I can only access the Shield's internal storage.
What do other people do when they want to add new files? I can of course unplug the drive and plug it into another computer, but surely there's a better way of doing it?

To be honest, I would stick to your current set up as you either don't know how to use or have no need to use it. If you honestly think that you get the same performance, picture quality etc. from a Chromecast....well....fair play to you. You would be in a minority of one though....

No, you don't get the same experience with a Chromecast. Chromecast is handy but it's not the same as controlling a box with a remote and a dedicated app. The Shield has Chromecast and Google assistant built in and has a mic

I'm fairly sure I know what they both are for and there is obviously some crossover of functionality, which is why I wouldn't have much use for it. I don't do gaming or use Plex etc..

Two completely different devices with two completely different uses, and if you don't know what the Shield is about, how can you compare it and say that you would have no other use? Plenty of info out there, Google is your friend...
